The August 2004 selection : the 1/18th Lamborghini Countach QV by Tonka Polistil.

FOr the summer, more precise August 2004, I've selected this 'older' model from my personal collection, this is a scale model from the legendary Lamborghini Countach LP500 Quattrovalvole, made by Polistil, an Italian company that made this model during 1989.

This model is probably less well known than the Bburago model, and I must admit that the Bburago 1/18th scale Lamborghini Countach is very nice, I own several colors of the latter too, but the Tonka Polistil model does have some interesting, unique details.

First of all, this is actually a model of the so-called 88 1/2 model, which can be seen at the side of the car, the striked air intakes are mounted on the side skirts, these would later be used on the 25th Anniversary model, but the last year of production of the Countach QV used these too, the Bburago model doesn't have these by the way.

Not too many of these Polistil Lamborghini models can be found, and most of those that still exist will probably be part of a collection owned by a car enthusiast, note that this model was actually made in three colors, red, white and black, and a nice detail is the fact that only the black one had a rear wing mounted, both the red and the white one were made without the wing.

Today these models are only found on car shows or other meetings, because Polistil no longer exists, they started creating these larger 1/16th and 1/18th scale metal models around 1976, shortly before Bburago started, who would become the biggest competition over the years. In 1988 the toy giant Tonka bought Polistil, and during the early Nineties several new models were created, among them a Diablo model and even a Miura were presented, but the competition from Bburago and other makes became too much and Tonka Polistil wasn't distributed after 1992 anymore, ironically Bburago actually acquired the name Polistil and the Polistil moulds in 1994.
Bburago no longer uses these moulds, and never even sold cars under the Polistil name, however Bburago does offer scale racetracks under the Polistil label.

Conclusion : perhaps not the most exact 1/18th scale model of the Lamborghini Countach QuattroValvole, but because of it's rare character and history of the company that made it, it does deserve a place in any Lamborghini enthusiasts collection.
