The Lamborghini Diablo GT2.
Apparently Lamborghini decided to go racing in 1998, they created this Diablo GT2 with an engine
pumping out more than 600 Bhp and with a displacement of 6 Liter, some sources even stated this was
the engine for the new Diablo successor, and it did get built into the Diablo GT and Diablo VT 6.0
in more or less the same design, only slightly de-tuned for road use.
Personally I think this car was a test bed for the new technologies, but won't
be sold. The SV-R is a very competitive car and a new race car isn't needed, also
the styling for the GT2 is surprisingly similar to those of the Affolter Tuned cars.
I did read somewhere that Affolter had designed a GT-car for Lamborghini, so could this
be it ?
The Diablo GT2 was actually shown at the Auto Show in Copenhagen in 1998, and apparently Automobili
Lamborghini SpA was trying to sell this redesigned Diablo, they even had a price
for this special, $ 350,000, but on the 1999 Geneva Auto Show Lamborghini showed the
Diablo GT, and this was going to be
the production unit. The Diablo GT went on sale starting in September of 1999, and only 80 cars would be
built.
I also heard the L147 engine would be used in this GT2 car to compete in the
24 hours of Le Mans in 1999, but that was just a rumor, and as far as I know there wasn't a Lamborghini
in Le Mans for the notorious 24h race in 1999.
If anyone knows anything more about this car please let me know.
Thank you.
