New photo's on the new Lamborghini 'entry' model.

On December 18. 2002 Automobili Lamborghini SpA published a press release stating the fact that the new V10 powered Lamborghini model would be called the 'Gallardo' and that they will introduce this brand new entry into the sportscar market during the March 2003 Geneva Auto Show.

The press release stated the following :

Lamborghini gets ready to introduce a second model at Geneva 2003

For the first time in over a decade, Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini will offer a second model line as of 2003. The completely new Lamborghini model, named Gallardo (pron. : ga:yàrdo), will be introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March next year.

The new Lamborghini takes its name from a famous fighting bull breed, selected since the 18th century by bull breeder Francisco Gallardo and then incororated by Don Antonio Miura.

Fierce, robust - black or grey - the Gallardo bulls were renowned for their courage and also for their power and aggressiveness until the so-called last 'third' of the corrida.

The new Lamborghini Gallardo will be a mid-engined four-wheel drive sportscar in true Lamborghini tradition, powered by an all-new V10 cylinder Lamborghini engine with 5 litres of displacement and a stunning 500 hp. Figures that will guarantee an outstanding performance.

Power transmission will be through a 6-speed gearbox with a traditional gear shift lever or a new sequential 'e-gear' with shift paddles at the steering wheel.

Production of the all-new Lamborghini V10 cylinder engine has already started on the newly built assembly line at Lamborghini's own engine facility at the Sant'Agata Bolognese plant.

over the last few months, some of these can be seen on this page, it remains to be seen if any of them actually will look like the actual car once it is shown to the public.

We could wonder why Lamborghini would make it into this new, more lucrative market, when they weren't able to become

successful before with the Urraco and Jalpa derivative.
The answer should be simple, with the backing of the massive Audi AG they will be able to market this new Lamborghini model a lot easier than before, and the chassis and layout of the Gallardo will be shared with a new Audi super sportscar that will be introduced during 2004 and the possibility to even use the chassis on a new Bugatti (Volkswagen AG also owns Bugatti by the way), the production numbers could be a lot higher than what Automobili Lamborghini was used to in the past.

As we already knew, the Gallardo will not use a tubular space frame, but an all aluminum space frame made possible by Audi AG's technology in this field. By using lightweight materials the Gallardo will put only 1,400 Kg (3,086 lb) on it's wheels, a very impressive figure considering the four-wheel drive layout combined with traction and stability control and a long list of creature comforts, still topspeed of this new Lamborghini will be around the 290 Km/h (180 Mph) region.
