Probably the best Urraco ever built was the P300, a direct answer to Ferrari's new 304 GT4, the successor to the famous
Dino. The P250 had to be changed, the price was too high and the workmanship wasn't up to the desired level. The engine for the P300 was enlarged to 3.0 litres, just like the Ferrari, and now had double overhead camshafts driven by chains, the combustion chambers were now in the heads, resulting in a more modern power unit than Lamborghini's V-12. The P300 was a much improved Urraco, with numerous little changes to the transmission, the suspension and the bodywork, the headlamps were moved further forward and the front hood now had six fins. The interior was also better finished thanks to Lamborghini, they now built the interior instead of Bertone (see the P200 entry), the P300 was therefore a much better car than the P250, it was the Urraco Ferruccio intended to built from the start, but it still didn't sell too good, partly because the P300 was never exported to the United States, the biggest market for high-performance cars. Some grey-market cars were shipped to the States, and one of these had a Silhouette rear deck installed, which made it a very rare car. Normally the US-customers only received the P250 Typo III, and because of its emission-control system and other modifications to comply with US-laws, the Typo III's power output dropped to a mere 180 bhp, and didn't perform up to the desired level. But Lamborghini's V-8 experience was far from over, the best V-8's were still to come, the radical Silhouette and the little Jalpa. |
