50 Years of the Lamborghini Countach: The Birth of a Legend

The Countach’s journey began in 1971 when Lamborghini introduced the LP 500 concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Designed by Marcello Gandini of Bertone, the concept car’s striking wedge shape and innovative engineering captivated the audience. However, transforming the LP 500 into a production-ready vehicle required three years of intense development and rigorous testing.

Finally, in March 1974, Lamborghini began mass production of the Countach LP 400, marking the birth of a legend. The LP 400 featured a 4-liter V12 engine mounted lengthwise, producing 375 CV and enabling a top speed of 497 mph (309 km/h) and 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration in just 5.4 seconds.

The Countach’s design, characterized by sharp angles and sleek lines, was a departure from the curvaceous shapes of its predecessors. Gandini’s futuristic styling, with its low, wide stance and angular features, set the blueprint for the modern supercar.

Pioneering Countach’s Production Process

The Countach marked a big change for Lamborghini’s production approach. For the first time, the company decided to make the car’s bodywork at its factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese, rather than hiring outside companies. This gave Lamborghini more control over both the design and quality of their cars, setting a new direction for their future models.

Before the Countach, Lamborghini used to rely on external coachbuilders for certain parts of production. But with the Countach, they brought everything in-house, which helped establish the brand’s reputation for offering highly customized cars—something they still do today.

Moving all production to the Sant’Agata Bolognese plant was a game-changing decision. The factory, which started at 12,000 square meters in the 1960s, has now grown to an enormous 346,000 square meters.

Crafting the Countach Body

The archived video from 1998, shared by Top Gear, highlights how the final ‘Anniversary’ edition of the Countach was built.

Instead of using automated machines, skilled metalworkers shaped the car’s distinctive aluminum body panels by hand, using just wooden molds. This was very different from the high-tech stamping methods most car manufacturers used back then.

After the panels were formed, they were carefully welded together to create the Countach’s unique angular shape. It’s clear from the video that this wasn’t a job for machines but for expert craftsmen.

The Countach’s design was unlike anything else on the road. With its sharp edges and geometric lines, it was a bold statement of modern design, where every curve and angle had a purpose. From the slashed rear wheel arches to the iconic scissor doors, every detail added to the car’s dramatic look and feel.

Powertrain Particulars

Under the sleek design of the Lamborghini Countach was the powerful engine of a true Italian sports car. It was equipped with a Lamborghini V12 engine, mounted lengthwise, which started with 4.0 liters of displacement and produced 375 horsepower in the LP400 model.

What made this setup special was the transmission being placed in front of the engine, with the driveshaft running through the oil sump to reach the rear differential. The V12 engine had roots going back to Giotto Bizzarrini’s 1963 design, and versions of it were used in other Lamborghinis from the 1960s and 70s, including the Miura.

Over the Countach’s 16-year run, the V12 was significantly upgraded, with a larger displacement, new cylinder heads, and fuel injection to meet stricter emissions standards. A 5-speed manual transmission helped get the power to the road. The assembly of the powertrain was a precise and careful process, with technicians hand-fitting each component. The transaxle layout, with the transmission and differential placed around the engine, gave the car excellent weight distribution and stability.

Interior Appointments

The same handcrafted approach applied to the Countach’s interior. The 1988 video shows skilled upholsterers meticulously hand-stitching the leather seats, door panels, and dashboard.

The geometric, modernist theme of the exterior continued inside, with a focus on clean lines and minimal adornment. Just as with the exterior, the Countach’s cabin was not designed for comfort or convenience, but rather to envelop the driver in a cocoon of purposeful performance. Comfort and ease of use were secondary concerns – this was a car built to go fast first and foremost.

The legendary British musician purchased the car new while on tour in Australia, and it was originally delivered in a right-hand-drive configuration. Stewart later brought the Countach to Los Angeles, where it underwent modifications, including a wide-body kit and a targa-style roof panel. After remaining in Stewart’s private collection until 2002, the car was converted to left-hand drive by its second owner. In 2013, a subsequent owner commissioned a refurbishment to return the bodywork to its factory configuration while retaining the left-hand-drive layout.

1974 Lamborghini Countach LP400 1:8 Replica Model Image Gallery

The Verde car is often considered to be the first production version of the Lamborghini Countach, also known as the LP400, despite it not looking exactly like the customer cars, more specifically the side windows would be totally different on the production Countach LP400, but also the intakes under the front bumper, still, several sources contribute chassis number 112 0001 to this green production prototype Lamborghini Countach.

This original Countach LP400 has been on display at the factory museum since the early 2000s, but more recently this very special car underwent a complete restoration, during which she was returned to her original configuration, still in Verde Medio, however, back in 1973, when this specific Countach LP400 was shown at the Geneva Motor Show, she was finished in red over a black suede dashboard but black leather on the seats, with dual windshield wipers and several other, unique features, but by the 1973 Paris Motor show, this Countach retained only one wiper and became the green shade over a brown interior and the silver front bumper we see today.

It was this exact Lamborghini Countach that was used to create the ‘master mold’ in wood that would be used to construct the body panels for the Countach production models, it was October 22nd in 1973 when this ‘master’ was sent to St.Agata, but chassis 112.0001 was used more recently for something truly special: the recreation of the actual 1971 Lamborghini Countach prototype, the yellow car commissioned by Albert Spiess.

A second very special Lamborghini Countach that joined this ‘generation’ drive was the silver metallic 25th Anniversary, chassis number KLA12085 is officially the last production Countach ever made, finished in ‘Argento’ in June 1990, however, some sources state that the factory actually completed two additional Countach after that date, from spare parts, for a customer in the UK and a client in the Far East, but the official end of the Countach production line occurred in June 1990 with this famous silver over grey car that was kept at the factory ever since, also note it is one of the rare Countach that does not have the rear wing fitted.

With only 150 units of the original Lamborghini Countach LP400, the number of 25th Anniversary Countach is more than four times greater, at 657 units, making the latter the most produced Countach in history, and with the limited production run of just 112 units on the 2022 Countach LPI 800-4, she will retain that title forever.

Personally, I find the 25th Anniversary edition of the legendary Countach the least interesting one, for me the Quattrovalvole (610 units) is the one I admire, sure the original, narrow-body LP400 demand the highest prices these days, but I prefer the wild looks of the QV model, the deeply concaved wheels, the massive 345mm wide rear tires, that massive rear wing, which I know actually decreases top speed, and that deep front spoiler … that’s the car I had as a poster in my bedroom, in red naturally.

For me the Countach 25th Anniversary was made too smooth, the lower side sills with their air intakes look too 80s for me, just like the intakes on the side of the front spoiler, and I prefer the box-style intakes behind the side windows and the pure rear fascia and taillights, while I really don’t like the rear bumper on this celebration model, but I do acknowledge the fact this later model celebrates 25 years of Automobili Lamborghini SpA, but I’ll take a QV over it any day of the week.

Just over 31 years since the last Lamborghini Countach rolled off the assembly line in Sant’Agata, they present the LPI 800-4 at Monterey Car Week in August 2021, a hybrid-powered homage to the 1971 Countach Prototype, exactly 50 years later, with a limited production run of just 112 units as a reference to the LP112 internal code of the Countach back in the Seventies, and while all 112 cars were sold out before the public unveiling, the 2022 Countach was very controversial, to say the least.

Bottom line is that Automobili Lamborghini SpA managed to find 112 clients to sign a contract for $2,000,000+ so they could add the new Countach to their collection, deliveries are foreseen to start in the first quarter of 2022, so within a few weeks we might be seeing the first customer cars appearing online, I for one can’t wait to see what color combinations were chosen for this illustrious V12 hybrid model. We’ve seen the first iteration of a Lamborghini Hybrid when they unveiled the Sián FKP37 back in September 2019 in Frankfurt, but the electric motor that delivers an additional 34 hp wasn’t powered by a battery, instead, Lamborghini fitted a Supercapacitor behind the seats, still, the Sián was Lamborghini’s first-ever hybrid that was sold to the public, albeit in very limited numbers, just 63 units of the Coupe and 19 units of the Sián Roadster.

Many saw the Countach LPI 800-4 as just a re-bodied Sián, which in her turn was still based on the Lamborghini Aventador, but strangely enough, the power output on the Sián got listed at 894  hp (785 hp from the V12 engine and 34 hp from the electric motor), but on the Countach version we only get 814 hp, comprised of 780 hp from the Aventador Ultimae engine with the extra 34 hp electric power, a 48-volt unit bolted directly onto the gearbox for instant response and additional performance.

We all know the successor to the Lamborghini Aventador has been in development for a while now, and it has been confirmed several times it will be a V12 powered hybrid, the NA V12 line will end when the final unit of the Aventador Ultimae rolls from the assembly line, probably by August 2022, although Winkelmann did mention we might be seeing a track-only, non-hybrid V12 in the future, but the fact remains that both the Sián and this Countach LPI 800-4 will be marking the end of an era, two very limited production models based on what will be the last of the pure V12 Raging Bulls.

Chassis number 1120238 was delivered through the well-known Achilli Motors dealership in Milan, the first registration was done on December 21, 1976, this specific Lamborghini Countach Periscopica was ordered as a birthday present for Princess Dalal Alsaud of Saudi Arabia, a gift from her husband at the time, and as purple and white were her favorite colors, this present boasts that color scheme.

The Lamborghini Countach was then taken to the Royal Family home in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where this special Bull was parked next to a white Ferrari 400, only to be sold again in a matter of years, by late 1979 the car was imported into the United States of America by a California based businessman who would own the car for the next four decades.

Over time the rather wild Viola Bianco color scheme got old, and the owner decided to have the famous paint shop Juniors House of Colors repaint this rare Countach to black, which would have looked amazing I guess with the white leather interior, do note white leather will take some serious maintenance to keep it clean, you might not want to wear too many blue jeans with these seats if you know what I mean.

During his ownership, both the engine and drivetrain were rebuilt over a period of three years between 2010-2013, but he decided to part with this lady around 2019, the car changed hands for the second time, now with 54,571 km on the counter, this Countach is again for sale by the third owner, but today this very special Lamborghini Countach LP400 Periscopica is back to her original 1976 factory specifications.

Once again boasting the stunning Viola Salchi over Bianco color combination, and yes, the Bianco details on the exterior have been resurrected, making this one of the most eye-catching and outrageous early, narrow-body Lamborghini Countach in existence, and while she’s listed for sale, the price is on-demand, and I would think this one will be well into the 7-figures to acquire keeping in mind this is a matching numbers Periscopica that could be admired on the lawn at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2021 in the 50th Anniversary of the Lamborghini Countach class S-02.

Today the different Viola shades offered by Automobili Lamborghini SpA are back in fashion, Viola SE30 made a come-back in 1993 already on the Diablo SE30, and today we’ve seen several Aventador and Huracán models being specced in that shade, but also Viola Pasifea is popular, or how about Viola Bast or the very dark Viola Aletheia … its clear purple is very much in fashion, so if you would like to know more about this classic Countach, and perhaps want to make an offer, then get in touch with MM Garage who is offering this one for sale at the time of writing.

In total 20 Countach joined this 2021 edition of the Lamborghini Day Japan, while more than 70 Lamborghini paraded through Tokyo, even the impressive, track-only, Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 was on display in Japan for this occasion, the most powerful Lamborghini since 1963 with more than 830 hp, it happened to be shown in Japan for the first time.

The Lamborghini Countach Contest Japan started on October 8th as a commemorative homage to the five decades of the Countach, in total 26 Countach from all over Japan were entered into the contest, including several Polo Storico certified ones, the ten Countach that would have the honor of being showcased during the Lamborghini Day Japan were selected by online voting in October.

During the Lamborghini Day itself the more than 500 participants would cast the final vote during six different sessions, the Lamborghini reaching the highest number of votes in each session would take the “Best of Countach” prize, a beautiful 1978 Countach LP400 S was selected as winner of the special jury prize by judges Jun Nishikawa (automobile writer), Shiro Nakamura (automobile designer), and Shiro Horie (Editor-in-Chief of Octane Japan).

Between 1974 and 1978 a total of 150 of these narrow body, Countach LP400 Periscopo were built, in 1978 the Countach S, or LP400 S was introduced, after Walter Wolf, a Canadian millionaire with a famous F1 team had two Countach LP400 modified to use wide Pirelli tires on massive Bravo style wheels … Lamborghini saw the potential of such an extreme interpretation of the original Countach that they made it a production model … intended to be built alongside the LP400, but after customers saw the more aggressive LP400 S, orders for the ‘non-S’ dried up and Ferruccio halted production.

As with the previous Miura, the engine cooling was another major problem, with the horizontally mounted radiators, the engine immediately overheated. Therefore, they had to change the entire cooling system, switching to vertically mounted radiators, but they now grabbed air through two scoops and two NACA inlets behind the doors.

Other outside changes were the installing of an effective windshield wiper system with one big wiper and a smaller one, and a rear view mirror was put on the bodywork. A change that was less well visible was the raised ‘bumper point’ to reduce the nose slope, because at high speed the steering became very heavy.

On the 1973 Geneva Auto Show, the first LP400 Countach prototype was shown, painted in a bright red and with a black suede interior. It showed the air intakes and the NACA ducts and had the 4.0-Liter engine installed, on the inside, the digital gauges were removed and the periscope rear view mirror was abandoned.

After the show closed, Bob Wallace used this car to perform various hard road and track tests. These tests led to a second LP400 Countach, which now used the tubular chassis. Driving lights were built into the front bumper, together with air intakes underneath it for the front brakes, and the installed windshield wiper was the same as on the actual production cars, while the first, red prototype used two wipers.

This dark green with brown upholstery Countach was shown to the public on the 1973 Paris Auto Show. This specific prototype was used to construct the ‘Master model’, a wooden construction that the panel beaters used to form the body panels on.

However, some small changed were still made, the body was made 13 cm longer, and the curvature of the rear mudguard was raised a few centimeters. During the autumn of 1973, the first production prototype was constructed entirely in the Lamborghini factory; this car featured the final side window arrangement using three pieces of glass instead of the previous two. In addition, the final interior styling was carried out; now the dashboard was equipped with American Stewart Warner instrumentation. This first production prototype was finished in a bright yellow with natural brown upholstery; the dashboard was covered with dark brown suede.

This was the car that would be featured in the factory folder (see illustration) and was shown on 1974 Geneva Auto Show.

It took the development team three long years to convert the LP500 into a production car, but by this time, while the first LP400 Countach was shown on the 1974 Geneva Auto Show, Ferruccio Lamborghini sold his company to the Swiss Georges-Henri Rosetti and Rene Leimer. The future of Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini did not look as bright as the yellow Countach, but it was this single model that would keep the company alive over many troublesome years.

The first production Countach left the factory on April 11, 1974 and was delivered to a customer in Milan. Today this first production model of the Countach is considered to be the most valuable, these cars were actually among the fastest Countach ever, even the QV that was introduced during the Eighties had trouble keeping up with a finely tuned LP400 model.

After the initial LP400 model the factory came up with every boys dream, the LP400 S, wide wheels arches, massive Pirelli tires and big wings, some even at the front or on the roof of the Countach.

However purists among the Lamborghini enthusiasts see the original LP400 Countach as the only ‘uncluttered’ model made of this exotic among super cars, no wings, no wide wheels, just pure lines that’s all the Lamborghini Countach needed to become the best selling car Lamborghini saw until then, these LP400 models are considered to be the most interesting Countach these days from an investment point of view, only a handful remain, and even less are in perfect condition. A model that would remain in production for many years, until in the early Nineties the Diablo would take over the reign of the Countach the latter still remains the ultimate car for an entire generation of people.

Many students had this Lamborghini featured on a poster in their bedrooms, with or without the usual female addition; there is probably not a single scale car collector in the world that doesn’t have at least one model of the Countach in his possession.

The price for a used Countach LP400 can vary significantly based on factors such as the model’s condition, mileage, and any restoration or modifications that may have been performed.

The lowest recorded sale price for a 1979 Lamborghini Countach LP400 S Series I by Bertone was $305,000 on November 30, 2019. The average sale price of a Lamborghini Countach LP400 S was reported to be $475,071. In 2022, the most expensive Lamborghini Countach LP400 S was sold for £460,000, whereas the cheapest one was sold for £213,750.
