In a small message on Twitter Lamborghini has published the fact that a total of 12000 Gallardo models have been built at this time, this clearly puts the V10 model firmly on the top spot of the most popular Raging Bull ever made.

The Lamborghini Gallardo was introduced at the 2003 Geneva Auto Show, so over a time span of nine years a total of 12000 units have been assembled in a multitude of versions.

2003 – It all started with the original Lamborghini Gallardo 5.2 V10 model

2005 – only two years later the Gallardo SE was unveiled, limited at 250 units it quickly sold out and was in fact a preview of the evolution that would also be available on the regular model that was accompanied by a stunning Spyder version shown at the 2005 IAA show, another instant success.

2006 – In September of 2006 we came eye to eye with the Gallardo Nera, a special model finished in Nero Serapis and Nero Noctis … a combination of high gloss black and mat black over an interior using black and white leather, simply amazing … but only 185 would ever be built, this was the second limited edition Gallardo model in three years.

2007 – Just in case the Gallardo wasn’t impressive enough for you the factory offered a brand new option at the 2007 Geneva show … the Superleggera, a special light-weight version of the Gallardo using lots of carbon fiber all around removing 100kg from the regular model and adding 10 bhp to the 520 bhp in the process … the Gallardo Superleggera was only available in a limited number of shades, the most impressive being a new Grigio Telesto, a dark grey shade that looked stunning on this model.

2008 – One year after the track inspired Superleggera Lamborghini unveiled the next step … the LP560-4 model , a bit of a face-lift at first glance, but this time the V10 offered 560 Bhp in a car that would take your breath away … later that year the LP560-4 appears in a full race dress as the Super Trofeo car, a one make racing series sponsored by Blancpain, it allows both professional and gentleman race drivers to take the wheel of a true Lamborghini race car on some of the most famous tracks in Europe.

At the end of 2008 the magnificent Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder gets to see the light, probably the most beautiful convertible on the market at that time.

2009 – Just in case another limited edition V10 was on your wish list … the Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni shows up as a celebration of the most popular test driver the company ever had, built only 250 times it was the first factory built Gallardo to have rear wheel drive only … for the ultimate driving experience.

2010 – want it a bit more aggressive ? Take a look at the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera, the new light-weight V10 evolution that later got yet another limited edition called the LP570-4 Blancpain edition … a celebration of the success of the Super Trofeo race car on the track. That same year the Gallardo Spyder Performante is shown in the United States … a Spyder version of the Superleggera.

2011 – Getting confused about all the different versions and special editions ? Here is one more, the Gallardo LP560-4 Bicolore adding a glossy black roof on a limited number of body shades, do note the US market received this car as the LP550-2 Bicolore, so with rear wheel drive only … by now over 10,000 Gallardo left the factory doors already.

If you living in Singapore there is yet another limited production model available, the Singapore Edition if which only 10 were built, either in black or in white, and in Italy the Gallardo Tricolore gets unveiled … a special version to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Italian unification.

And we’re still not done … at the IAA Auto Show in Frankfurt late 2011 the Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale takes center stage, finished in a bright Rosso Mars shade it clearly means to take the red shade back to Sant’Agata … but wait, just before the year ends we get the Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder, a rear wheel drive only ‘entry-level’ open top model, and you can also order the LP550-2 in closed shape now too, but it will not be the original Valentino Balboni model.

2012 – we now have 12,000 Gallardo that left the assembly line, not all of them still exist today as some have been caught in severe accidents, but still it is a serious milestone for Automobili Lamborghini SpA to be able to sell that kind of units … and a replacement could be just around the corner.

Talk about the successor, which could be called Cabrera according to some sources (which is Spanish for goat herder !?) has been going on for a few years already, but I think we will have to wait another year before we see anything like a new V10 super car from Sant’Agata. Firstly because it has been confirmed the Super Trofeo, which uses a car based on the LP560-4 model, will continue in 2012 … and 2013, and secondly there has been no spy shots of any kind yet on this new mode.

Probably the 2012 Geneva show will give us the Aventador LP700-4 Roadster version and perhaps the production version of the track only Sesto Elemento car while a possible SUV concept should also be unveiled later this year on China … what we’ll be seeing at the Paris Motor Show is a total surprise for me, and something special will be at the 2013 Geneva show too … which will bring us the Cabrera or whatever they will call the new V10 model only at the 2013 IAA show in Frankfurt … which would make perfect sense as by that time the 2013 season of the Super Trofeo series will have been concluded.
