Automobili Lamborghini will present the passionately developed evolution of the Lamborghini Murciélago Coupé at the 76th International Car Show in Geneva.

The new version of this highly successful super-sports car features considerable innovations in terms of body design and mechanics.

And also with a new name: Murciélago LP640, which refers to its engine position – longitudinale posteriore – and to its power 640 hp. Designers and engineers have not only focused on reworking the engine, suspensions, gearbox, exhaust system, brakes and electronics, but also the interior and exterior design; improvements that make the Murciélago LP 640 the most extreme and fastest sports car in its class, placing it at the very top.

The first vehicles will be available in spring 2006. Since the original Murciélago’s debut at the 2001 International Car Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, around 2,000 vehicles have left the car plant in Sant’Agata Bolognese.

Unmistakable Design

In their reinterpretation of the Murciélago LP640, the designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre have remained true to the traditional Lamborghini principles of purism, sport and function. The Murciélago LP640 now appears even more aggressive, with the new front and rear bumpers contributing significantly to its appearance.

The exhaust system terminal has been incorporated in the diffuser on the rear bumper. Other innovations include the rear lights, which enhance the distinguishing features of the Murciélago LP640, making it unmistakable even at night.

The design of the sides is also worth mentioning: while the area behind the air intake on the right side is practically closed, the left side features a vast aperture for cooling the oil radiator. Together with the aerodynamically defined front and rear, this proves yet again that the shape of a Lamborghini is dictated by function.

For those wishing to flaunt the heart of their Murciélago LP640, on request an engine hood made of transparent glass can be supplied. The rear view mirrors and the windscreen wipers have been modified to improve aerodynamics and ‘Hermera’ light metal wheel rims have been added.

The graphics of the instrument panel lights in the cockpit have been revamped. The interior upholstery also has a new look thanks to the lozenge-shaped stitching.

More powerful engine

The engine of the new Murciélago LP640 has undergone outstanding and radical modification. The increased bore and longer stroke have boosted the displacement of the classic 60-degree V-engine from 6.2 litres to 6.5 litres (6,496 ccm). Thus the already extraordinary 580 hp engine power has now been elevated to an impressive peak of 640 hp (471 kW) at 8000 min-1. The 12-cylinder engine reaches a maximum torque of 660 Nm at 6000 min-1.

Naturally, the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 complies with every European and North American law governing exhaust fumes.

This ‘evolutionary leap forward’ has been possible thanks to a coherent review of every engine component : the cylinder head and the entire intake system (based on the tried and tested Lamborghini variable geometry system), have been completely reworked. The crankshaft, camshafts and exhaust system have also undergone innovation. The increase in power naturally determines an increase in performance. The excellent performance of the Murciélago LP640 means it can now accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds (0.4 seconds faster than the previous model).

Lamborghini engineers have also concentrated on improving torque development.

The ‘drivability’ of the engine is enhanced by a continuous variable timing system (intake and exhaust side) and a drive-by-wire engine management system. To meet the thermal requirements of the engine, the engineers have foreseen a considerably larger oil radiator and subsequently, the air intake on the left side of the vehicle has been enlarged. The liquid cooling system, characterised by the Lamborghini VACS system (variable geometry air inlet system) remains the same. Electronically managed air intakes open depending on the outdoor temperature and the need for cooling air, ensuring maximum aerodynamic efficiency.

Gearbox and transmission: improved efficiency and strength

More power and higher torque call for superior gearbox component performance. To meet these new demands, the new Murciélago LP640 features a modified six ratio gearbox as well as a tougher rear differential and new axle shafts. On request, the e-gear automatic gearbox is also available equipped with the new dedicated ‘Thrust’ (acceleration programme) mode.

Just like its predecessors, the Murciélago LP640 features permanent four-wheel drive, based on the reliable Lamborghini VT (Viscous Traction) system. The system is self-governing and does not feature any electronic controls. The drive force is usually divided between the front and rear axles in the ratio of 30 to 70. An independent control circuit adjusts the distribution of the drive force depending on dynamic oscillation, weight distribution and the relative friction factor in perfect synchronisation with the Visco clutch. In extreme cases, up to 100% of the drive force can be applied to a single axle.

Electronics: a “closed loop” for total control

The electronics have also been updated. The modified engine control units improve engine performance and ‘driveability’ thanks to ‘closed loop’ control.

Every engine and vehicle parameter is managed and controlled by three ‘master’ control units and a ‘satellite’ control unit. The master control units consist of two Lamborghini ‘LIE’ engine control units, a Lamborghini ‘GFA’ (Auxiliary Function Management) control unit and a Lamborghini ‘PMC’ (Power Motor Control) satellite control unit.

The control units are interconnected by a CAN Bus line.

Frame and chassis: perfect harmony

The body of the Murciélago LP640 with its characteristic scissor doors is created from the prized union of sheet steel and honeycombed carbon fibre, glued and riveted together.

Driving, handling and stability at high speed are enhanced by new springs and stabilisers, as well as by a redesigned electronically controlled damper. The ‘antidive’ and ‘anti-squat’ features on the axles, which efficiently prevent so-called ‘brake diving’ and ‘squatting’, have not been changed. The two springs on every rear wheel, the single spring on every front wheel and the damper are placed coaxially.

The new aluminium ‘Hermera’ rims measure 8.5 x 18 inch (fore carriage) and 13 x 18 inch (rear axle). The vehicle can be fitted with various sized Pirelli P Zero ‘Rosso’ tyres. The Murciélago LP640 features 245/35 ZR 18 front tyres and 335/30 ZR 18 rear tyres. For sports use, especially on racetracks, Lamborghini provides optional Pirelli P Zero ‘Corsa’ (Race) tyres. Pirelli P ‘Sottozero’ (Sub zero) winter tyres are currently being developed.

Brakes and safety: optional ceramic carbon brakes

A super sports car such as the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 ensures high safety levels.

The dual hydraulic circuit brake system equipped with a vacuum brake booster ensures considerable deceleration values. The self-ventilating front and rear brake disks measure 380 mm x 34 mm and 355 mm x 32 mm respectively. The control circuit of the four-channel anti-blocking system (ABS) with electronic brake control (DRP) and traction control (TCS) features a new characteristic curve. The system consists in an electro-hydraulic control unit and four speed sensors.

When particularly high braking performance is required, on request it is possible to equip the vehicle with 380 mm x 36 mm ceramic carbon brakes featuring six-piston brake callipers. Thus, less pressure needs to be applied to the brake pedal and the braking distance is reduced. Even in extremely demanding conditions there is almost no perceptible fading. Considerably reduced weight and superior lifetime represent two further advantages, as well as a captivating graphic design.

The new Murciélago LP640 also meets with even the most rigorous safety requirements. Thanks to the two front airbags (a 60-litre single stage air bag on the driver side and a 130-litre two stage airbag on the passenger side), the Murciélago LP640 complies with every international law in effect in terms of head-on and side crashes, impacts against posts, occupant safety, fuel supply integrity and flammability of materials. The luggage compartment also complies with childproof safety regulations.

Interior: even more exclusive and customised

The seats in the cockpit have undergone the most radical changes; more spacious and equipped with redesigned head restraints, the seats now ensure better comfort.

The leather upholstery features lozenge-shaped stitching called ‘Q-citura’. The same design is recaptured on the upholstery on the door panels, the panel between the seats and the engine compartment, and on the roof panel.

A new instrument panel has been developed with lights featuring a new graphic design, flanked by a new Kenwood car radio with a 6.5inch widescreen monitor and DVD, MP3 and WMA player. An optional navigation system is also available (standard in Japan).

Like its predecessors, the new Murciélago LP640 can be customised thanks to the special fittings and upholstery packages. For the first time, the renowned characteristic Murciélago Roadster asymmetric and driver-oriented fittings and upholstery are available for the Coupé, featuring a perforated leather driver’s seat and door panel.

Thanks to the ‘Privilegio’ customisation program, any Murciélago LP640 can be transformed into a customised sports car. For example, the cockpit can be enhanced with an extremely refined carbon finish applied to the air conditioning control panel, the control lever console and the parking brake.

VERSACE – LAMBORGHINI ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF:
THE NEW LAMBORGHINI MURCIÉLAGO LP 640 ROADSTER VERSACE AND THE EXCLUSIVE VERSACE COLLECTION LP 640

Versace and Lamborghini, collaborators since 2006, proudly announce the launch of the new Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640 Roadster VERSACE and a unique collection of accessories, both to be previewed for the first time at the Maison’s Via Gesù 12, Milan on Monday June 23rd, 2008.

To create the new super roadster, the Maison Versace’s designers joined forces with designers from the Lamborghini Design Centre (Centro Stile)and specialists working on the “ad personam” project. This Lamborghini program allows individual clients to create personalised sports cars, choosing the equipment specification, the colour of the exterior body and of the interior fittings.

The new limited edition Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640 Roadster VERSACE, which will be produced to order, displays a pastel white livery and the Versace Greek key motif on the lower part of the door. Equipped for the very first time with a transparent engine hood that reveals the powerful V12 engine, this model has been reconfigured internally. The cradle seats are clad in black and white leather, while opulent full grain soft nappa leather – hand-embroidered with the Versace Greek fret motif – upholsters the instrument panel, the doors and the central console.

The rigorous design and minimal lines of the Murciélago engine hood inspired the Versace Collection LP 640 range of accessories, which will also be previewed for the first time globally.
Exclusively crafted in black matte calf skin, models include: a trolley bag, suit carrier, sports bag, as well as a briefcase, suitcase, gloves, driving shoes, belt, wallet, key ring, beauty case, hat and a pair of jeans. These hand-made accessories boast traditional craftsmanship, stitching and edging à la française and a palladium-engraved tag displaying both the Versace and Lamborghini logos.

This prestigious accessory collection will be exclusively available at Versace Boutiques and selected Lamborghini showrooms beginning in November 2008.

Gianni Versace’s CEO Giancarlo Di Risio emphasised: “This new supercar and the exclusive Collection LP640 represent a natural evolution of excellence for both Versace and Lamborghini through the creation of these unique, one-of-a-kind projects.”

Stephan Winkelmann, president and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A., said: “Our collaboration with Versace turned out to be an excellent experience and is an example of how we are pursuing our strategy of developing luxury products outside of luxury sports cars. We are proud to be in this prestigious, Made in Italy partnership with Versace, which adds to our other recent successes.”

On the 2006 Paris Motor Show we were able to admire a very special Murciélago … Automobili Lamborghini SpA had teamed up with Versace to create a very limited number of bespoke Murciélago LP640 featuring amazing looking stitching on the seats, doors, dashboard and central console … this stitching actually represented the famous Versace House, a Greek fret motif.

Only 20 of these ‘fashion’ Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Versace would be built … either Bianco Isis (like the Paris show car) or Nero Aldebaran (shown by Versace during the Fashion Week in Milan) … in fact 10 units of each shade would be made available to the public, complete with Versace keychain and luggage to match …

In early 2007 a very special request was made by Versace … to celebrate the fact Gianni and Donatella Versace received the ‘Rodeo Walk of Style® Award’ from the Rodeo Drive Committee and the City of Beverly Hills on February 8. 2007 they wanted to create a one-off version of the already limited edition Murciélago LP640 Versace … in the form of a custom shade Roadster edition.

Finished in Blu Fontura, a very dark, nearly black metallic shade over a black interior with the special Versace stitching rolling on glossy black wheels, this 2007 Murciélago LP640 Roadster Versace (chassisnumber ZHWBU47S97LA02408) looked absolutely amazing … and what made it even better was the fact it was up for auction … proceeds would benefit Elton John’s AIDS foundation.

Back in early 2007 famous actress Sharon Stone led the auction for this one of a kind Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster Versace to a winning bid of $500,000 … the car was won by Vik Keuylian of Lamborghini Orange County, where it was offered for sale … rumor had it the car was valued as high as $1,000,000 at one point, unfortunately this very special Versace Roadster didn’t sell … at least not ‘as is’.

At a certain point this special Lamborghini was shipped back to Italy (it wasn’t really an US specs car to begin with either, for one it didn’t have the required side lights) and converted into a regular LP640 Roadster US-specs car … all the bespoke Versace items were removed from the car and it was listed for sale by Cats Exotics … it eventually sold to a customer in China in 2009 … after receiving a rear wing and a $12k stereo upgrade … the original blue LP640 Roadster Versace no longer exists in fact.

But the story would continue … in June 2008 an official press release gets published … Versace and Lamborghini announced the launch of a new Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster Versace together with a unique collection of accessories to be unveiled in Milan on Monday, June 23rd, 2008 … so even the factory no longer considers the blue Roadster to be a Versace edition … to emphasize this the plaque in this new, all white LP640 Roadster Versace, shows ‘0001’.

This new Murciélago LP640 Roadster Versace is built to order only, finished in a pastel white shade with the classic Versace Greek fret on the door it is the first Murciélago Roadster to receive the new glass engine cover while the interior used full grain but very soft Nappa leather … combining black and white leather that is stitched with the Greek fret once again.

A series of Versace/Lamborghini accessories was released at the same time, among them a trolley bag, suit carrier, sports bag, as well as a briefcase, suitcase, gloves, driving shoes, belt, wallet, key ring, beauty case, hat and a pair of jeans … all showing a palladium-engraved tag displaying both the Versace and Lamborghini logos … called the ‘LP640 Collection’.

This white ‘0001’ Roadster Versace did sell initially … and in November 2013 it showed up on the second hand market again, listed at €315,000 (about $425,000) by Amian Cars in Germany with less than 3,000 Miles on the counter it was offered as the one and only white LP640 Roadster Versace … which is isn’t in fact, at least not exactly …

There is a lot of controversy about the Murciélago LP640 Roadster Versace … the dark blue metallic early 2008 one is no longer considered to be a real Versace Roadster while this white ‘0001’ one is in fact the car used by Lamborghini in their official press release from June 2008 … but there are in fact two other, white Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster Versace units in the world.

In November 2010 Bellagio Motors, located in Costa Mesa USA, lists a 2008 Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster Versace edition (VIN ZHWBU47S08LA02895) for $635,000 … finished in ‘Bianco Versace’ over a two tone black (Nero Porseus) and white interior … complete with the famous Versace Greek fret stitching and a special Versace plaque between the seats with only 1,200 Miles on the counter … however things get interesting … this isn’t the same car as the ‘0001’ unit shown in the press release!

There are a lot of differences in fact … this US car is a real US-specs car complete with orange and red side lights while the ‘0001’ car had the Euro style triangular side turn signal indicator. Furthermore this US car has the regular Roadster engine cover, the Versace Roadster should have the glass engine cover as listed in the press release. And the list goes on … take a close look at the interior … the ‘0001’ Versace Roadster has seats with a completely white front, the central console is also covered in white leather and the door insets are white too … this US car has completely black door panels, a black central console and the seats only have white centers, the sides on the front are black leather. Also the plaque is different between them, while the ‘0001’ proudly shows this number on the plaque, the US car doesn’t … in fact there is no serial number on the plaque of this US LP640 Roadster Versace.

Upon closer inspection this US-specs Versace Roadster has an interior identical to the one used in the ten Bianco Isis finished Murciélago LP640 Versace units … so is it a detailed replica, did it borrow the interior from a closed Coupé variant … or has it been ordered from the factory in this form through the Ad Personam program? In fact you could order all the special Versace items found on the Murciélago LP640 from the parts department in Sant’Agata … apart from the Versace plaque between the seats … still this US car wears that plaque with proud, so it either came from a real LP640 Versace coupé or the owner was able to get the plaque from the Versace House in Italy … still it looks exactly how a Murciélago LP640 Roadster Versace should, but it isn’t the official press release ‘0001’ car that came up for for sale in Germany in November 2013.

So that means there are already two white Versace Roadster in the world … and to make things even more interesting … there is a third one sold to a customer in the Middle East. An avid fan asked the factory to build him a real LP640 Roadster Versace toward the end of the production … initially they refused, but after some serious negotiations and an undisclosed amount on the final invoice Lamborghini agreed to build a genuine, officially numbered LP640 Roadster Versace … complete with correct plaque between the seats showing ‘0002’.

This ‘third’ Versace Roadster was in fact nearly identical to the first one, correct full white interior, transparent engine cover and all the correct Versace Greek fret stitching on the white central console, the white door insets, the front seats and lower sections of the dashboard … the only visible difference between ‘0001’ and ‘0002’ are the electric window switches on the central console.

So bottom line … how many Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster Versace are there in the world? I would say two official, factory built ones wearing ‘0001’ and ‘0002’ plaques between the seats, however the third one that was located in the United States does look very, very close to a real one too, but the plaque is a bit of a mystery … still it has everything a Versace Lamborghini should have … with the initial, dark blue one no longer being considered a real Versace Roadster I would state there are three units out there, two highly desirable ones with original, correct Roadster plaque and a third very interesting one with a regular Versace plaque.

What if the Murciélago LP640 Roadster just isn’t enough to your likings ? You’ve seen it all, and you neighbor drives a similar car so you just have to figure something out to draw attention to yourself and your Raging Bull the next time you park next to it.

A great way to be the center point of interest is turning your ‘standard’ LP640 into a GTR made by IMSA GmbH in Germany, even better, a GTR Spyder which is based on the Murciélago LP640 Roadster.

The orange metallic car on these pages is the first Roadster to be turned into an IMSA GTR Spyder, and you must admit that it looks just gorgeous, intimidating from every angle and screaming speed and aggression from every air intake or outlet.

And there are plenty of those around, the massive front spoiler has been replaced with an IMSA unit featuring some amazing, shark style louvers on the sides in front of the wheels, it even features air outlets at the top of it.

Talking about the front wheels, these have been replaced by massive wheels named ‘Ultimo’ and finished in high gloss black on this car, the widened front fenders now also house some stunning Carbon Fiber outlets at the top, a very racing style detail.

IMSA GmbH continues the Carbon Fiber treatment on the side skirts and for the stunning rear wing mounted on this Raging Bull, even the under body diffuser is finished in this high gloss material now, all very nicely contrasting with the bright orange bodywork on this car.

And the IMSA GTR Spyder isn’t all about looks, the exhaust pipe may look like the original one, but it surely isn’t, for one it’s sound can be controlled remotely, from a low growl while driving within the city limits to a thundering howling that wouldn’t be out of place on the track to be honest.

If the sound won’t impress you, take a look at these figures : a total of 708 Bhp that will make this orange GTR Spyder reach 100 Km/h in a mere 3.3 seconds before going for a top speed beyond the magical 350 Km/h mark … how’s that for a Saturday night out under the stars ?

This might very well be the closest you’ll ever get to a street legal Murciélago R-GT, but don’t forget there are many tuners out there these days, even Reiter Engineering themselves, the builders of the original R-GT now offer a street version of their race car, however this orange IMSA GTR Spyder sure looks good … I would find it difficult to decide between all of them. However why not a closed R-GT street version from Reiter and this convertible version from IMSA, that way you’ll have the best of both worlds.

Lamborghini is presenting the new version of the Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster benefits from the same extensive modifications to the bodywork and mechanics as the LP640 Coupé, as well as delivering its own distinct character.

Even more aggressive design

In their re-interpretation of the Roadster, the designers of the Lamborghini Centro Stile have remained true to the original style principles of purism, sportiness and functionality. As with the Coupé it has now assumed a more aggressive appearance, a substantial influence being the new front and rear bumpers.

On the latter there is a new rear diffuser, in which the exhaust system is integrated within a tailpipe. The rear lights are also new, increasing the distinguishing features and making the Murciélago Roadster as unmistakable at night as in daylight.

The asymmetrical design of the sides is particularly striking. Whilst the area behind the air inlet on the right is almost closed, on the left there is a large opening for the ventilation of the oil cooler. This, in addition to the aerodynamic form of the front and rear, is an illustration of how functionality dictates the shape of a Lamborghini.

Changes to the rear-view mirror make the Murciélago Roadster more aerodynamic, with other features including new windscreen wipers and the option of new Hermera alloy wheels.

From its forerunner, the Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster LP640 has inherited the characteristic asymmetrical interior arrangement. The whole interior is tailored to the driver and arranged in such a way that a true driver-focused experience is offered; a car which challenges yet at the same time is entirely geared to the driver. This is illustrated in the use of perforated leather for the chair cushions, the dashboard tunnel console and the door lining on the driver’s side.

The instrument panel has also been redesigned with different display graphics. This includes a new Kenwood car radio with a 6.5 inch widescreen monitor and reader for DVD, MP3 and WMA. The navigation system (standard equipment in Japan) is also available as an option.

Like its predecessor, the Murciélago LP640 Roadster can be customised through special equipment packages. The ‘ad personam’ individualisation program offers even more scope to create a personal, unmistakeably individual sports car.

More powerful engine

As with the Coupé the new 6.5 litre (6.496 cm3) 60-degree V-engine and 640 PS (471 kW) at 8,000 RPM is now used also in the Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster. At 6,000 RPM the 12-cylinder engine reaches the maximum torque of 660 Nm. Naturally the Lamborghini Murciélago meets all the current valid European and North American emission standards.

The increased power naturally leads to increased road performance. The maximum speed now lies at 330 km/h compared to 320 km/h. The standard sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is now reached by the Murciélago LP640 Roadster in an excellent 3.4 seconds making it 0.4 seconds faster than its forerunner.

The engineers also focused their attention on optimising the torque band. The driveability of the engine thus benefits from the use of a continually variable timing system (intake and exhaust side) and engine management with Drive-by-Wire-System.

In order to meet the increased thermal requirements of the engine, the engineers built a larger oil cooler. On the exterior this is illustrated by a larger air inlet on the left wing of the vehicle. The liquid cooler on the other hand remains unchanged with the Lamborghini VASC System (variable geometry air inlet system). Additional electronically controlled air scoops open according to the outside temperature and cool air requirement. This guarantees maximum aerodynamic efficiency.

Gears and drive – more efficient and more resistant

Higher performance and torque naturally mean increased demand on the drive components. A six-gear transmission adapted to these requirements, plus a stronger rear differential and new half-axles, have therefore been deployed in the new Murciélago Roadster. An e-gear transmission with a newly tuned thrust mode (acceleration program) is also available as an option.

Like its forerunner, the new Murciélago Roadster LP640 has permanent four-wheel drive. This is based on Lamborghini’s proven VT-system (Viscous Traction), which is self-regulating without the aid of electronic controls. In standard cases the drive force is distributed between the front and rear axles at a ratio of 30 to 70. An independent control loop adjusts the distribution of the drive force depending on dynamic oscillation, weight distribution and the relative friction values in synchronisation with the Visco clutch. In extreme cases, up to 100 percent of the drive force can thus be applied to one axle.

Electronics – closed loop for total control

Innovations have also been made to the electronics. With a closed loop control system the revised electronic control units improve the road performance and the response characteristics of the engine. All engine and vehicle parameters are controlled and monitored through a combination of three ‘master’ and one ‘slave’ control units. These are two electronic control units of the Lamborghini LIE type: a Lamborghini GFA (Gestione Funzioni Ausiliarie, i.e. Auxiliary Function Control) control unit and a Lamborghini PMC (Power Motor Control, i.e. slave unit). These control units are interconnected by means of a CAN bus.

Frame and chassis

Although the Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster LP640 is principally based on the Murciélago Coupé, it has further distinguishing features beyond its distinctive appearance. First and foremost, newly designed frame structure parts made of steel and carbon fibre guarantee an unswerving torsion resistance even without a roof. A special reinforcement structure in the engine area makes a major contribution to this aspect. This optically distinctive reinforcement can also be delivered in carbon fibre on request. Without impairing the extreme character of a typical roadster, a canvas roof (R.top) can be fitted which, true to the design tradition of this type of vehicle, is principally conceived for temporary use (for example in a sudden shower of rain) and for speeds of up to 160 km/h.

With its characteristic wing doors, the bodywork of the Murciélago LP640 Roadster is still made from an extremely high quality combined structure of sheet steel and carbon honeycomb. The combination of these materials is achieved by bonding and riveting.

The road performance, handling and stability at high speeds benefit from the use of new springs and stabilisers as well as the revising of the electronically controlled silencers. The anti-dive and anti-squat properties of the axles which effectively prevent brake diving and squatting, remain unchanged. The springs (two for each rear wheel and one for each front wheel) and silencers are coaxially aligned.

The new aluminium Hermera rims measure 8.5 x 18 inch at the front and 13 x 18 inch at the rear. The vehicle is equipped with mixed tyres of the type PIRELLI P Zero ‘ROSSO’: the Murciélago LP640 Roadster is driven at the front on tyres with the dimensions 245/35 ZR 18 and 335/30 ZR 18 at the rear. Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres are available as an option: particularly appropriate for use on race tracks.

Brakes and safety

It goes without saying that a super sports car such as the new Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster goes hand-in-hand with a high level of safety.

Its hydraulic dual circuit braking system with LP-brake servo (unit) ensures impressive delay values under even the hardest strain. The internally ventilated brake disks measure 380 mm x 34 mm at the front and 355 mm x 32 mm at the rear. The closed loop of the four-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) is enhanced, with electronic braking management (DRP) and traction control (TCS). The system consists of an electro-hydraulic control unit and four sensors for the wheel speeds.

When extremely high performance braking is required it is possible to equip the vehicle with carbon ceramic brakes measuring 380 mm x 36 mm with six-piston-brake callipers, which reduce pressure on the brake pedal and shorten the braking distance. Even under the toughest strain, there is almost no brake fading. Substantially reduced weight and greater durability are further advantages in addition to the carbon ceramic brakes’ attractive appearance.

The new Murciélago LP640 Roadster meets rigorous standards in terms of passive safety. With two front-seat air bags, a 60-litre airbag on the driver’s side and a 130-litre airbag on the passenger side, it meets all existing world-wide standards in the event of head-on and side crashes, impact against poles, occupant safety in the case of accident, fuel supply integrity and fuel combustibility. The luggage compartment also complies with childproof safety regulations. The Murciélago LP640 Roadster has automatically lowered roll bars; if the electronic control of this device detects a critical situation, the roll bars shoot out behind the seats within just a few milliseconds.

The impressive Murciélago LP640 was only introduced a few months ago on the Geneva Auto Show in March 2006, but in December 2006, Automobili Lamborghini SpA already unveiled their ‘topless’ edition, the long awaited Roadster version of this new flagship.

The canvas roof was still there, with 640hp on tap and looks like that, the Roadster edition would become an instant success.

The LP640 Roadster was an impressive looking work of art on wheels, the same new wheel design as available on coupé combined with the extremely impressive central mounted exhaust pipe surrounded by the new rear diffuser, deep front spoiler and extreme side air exhausts, the Roadster edition was one mean looking super car to say the least.

Waiting time would be long on this new model, as many potential buyers didn’t order the outgoing Roadster but waited for this new LP640 Roadster, so you could be sure the orders for this ‘fighter’ on wheels started pouring in when it debuted at the Los Angeles Motor Show on December 1 and on the Bologna Motor Show on December 7.

Again, a true flagship V12 ‘open top’ model from Sant’Agata.

Performance

The heart of the LP 640 Roadster is a naturally-aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine. This mechanical marvel, draped in the Lamborghini’s signature longitudinal mid-engine design, cranks out a mammoth 640 horsepower (hence the LP 640 moniker) at 8,000 rpm and a torque of 487 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm. The result is an exhilarating 0-60 mph time of just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph. These figures translate to a real-world driving experience that’s nothing short of electrifying.

What’s more, the Murciélago LP 640 Roadster features an all-wheel-drive system with viscous traction, ensuring optimal power distribution. This, combined with the six-speed e-Gear automated manual transmission, allows for an ultra-responsive and smooth ride, whether you’re cruising along coastal highways or testing the car’s limits on a track.

Equally impressive is the Murciélago’s handling. The double-wishbone suspension, complemented by an anti-dive and anti-squat system, provides a perfect balance between comfort and performance. The steering, precise and responsive, enhances the driving experience, making the car feel nimble despite its size. Aiding this agility is the car’s dry weight of just 3,850 pounds, courtesy of the extensive use of carbon fiber and high-strength steel in the body construction.

Murciélago LP 640 Roadster Interior & Exterior Design

The Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640 Roadster is a physical embodiment of the brand’s commitment to audacious design and meticulous craftsmanship.

On the exterior, the LP 640 Roadster is a seamless blend of aggression and elegance. Its muscular and aerodynamic contours are an homage to the trademark Lamborghini style. The design is low and wide, with a sharply raked windshield and large air intakes that highlight the car’s performance-focused nature. The bi-xenon headlamps offer both aesthetic appeal and practical illumination, and the distinctive scissor doors – a signature of Lamborghini – reinforce the supercar’s exotic allure. The removable roof, made of fabric and carbon fiber, allows drivers to convert this beast into a top-down cruiser at their whim, adding another layer of exhilaration to the driving experience.

The Murciélago’s rear features a complex lattice work of vents and grilles that cool the massive V12 engine, and the centrally mounted exhaust, surrounded by a diffuser, indicates the car’s track-ready potential. The 18-inch Hermera alloy wheels, shod in Pirelli P Zero Rosso tires, further enhance the car’s aggressive stance.

The interior of the LP 640 Roadster is just as impressive. It’s a cockpit built for both luxury and functionality. The seats are upholstered in hand-stitched Italian leather, available in a myriad of colors and finishes. Carbon fiber accents throughout the cabin highlight the car’s lightweight construction and sporty pedigree.

The instrument cluster features classic analog dials for speed and RPM, along with a digital display for other essential information. The center console houses controls for the climate system and the Lamborghini multimedia system, which includes a state-of-the-art navigation system and audio controls.

Ergonomics within the cabin have been thoughtfully addressed. The seats offer substantial bolstering to keep occupants in place during spirited driving, while the adjustable steering column ensures a comfortable driving position. Despite its low-slung design, visibility is commendable thanks to cleverly designed mirrors and a rearview camera.

World exclusive: The brand new imsa technical and aerodynamic-enhancement program for the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640

Imsa, the world-acclaimed, German High-Tech Engineering specialist, exclusively presents, after successfully introducing the stunning imsa GTV Supercar based on all versions of the Lamborghini Gallardo, its new technology and design-enhancement program for Lamborghini’s current top-of-the-range supercar, the Murciélago LP640.

Special emphasis must be laid on the technology- and design-package made from Autoklav moulded carbon fibre. Technology which is normally only being used in Formula 1 and other Top-motorsports Series. Imsa’s main target was, for all owners of the Lamborghini top-of-the-range-model, to offer an exclusive product line, transforming the Murcielago both technically and optically into a unique work of art, with the aim of significantly enhancing the exclusivity of Lamborghini’s Top-model.

The strikingly aggressive and aerodynamically highly effective front apron (spoiler) perfectly aligned to the wheel arches (widened 35mm on each side), directly becomes apparent. On the upper side of the wheel arches, imsa CFK air ducts have been integrated, resulting in a significant reduction of the drag effect caused by non-aerodynamic airflow at higher and highest velocity. The imsa side-skirts on the underside guarantee the optimum airflow to the imsa diffuser, which has been developed for an aerodynamically perfect interaction with the imsa rear spoiler. Imsa herewith achieved to considerably lower the downforce at higher and highest speeds. The benefits for the driver are a significant enhancement of driving stability, safety and enjoyment.

All parts of the imsa-aerodynamic-enhancement program are either available in carbon-onsight or can be painted in any colour of choice. The imsa aerodynamic-enhancement-program is available from November 2007 on and will soon be available for the ‘standard’ Murcielago as well. The imsa technical enhancement program also includes – exactly as for the imsa GTV Supercar based on the Lamborghini Gallardo – exclusive imsa multi-part sports wheels with central locking system, various sports chassis with individual settings, and, last but not least, various imsa engine modifications and own engines. At imsa, each customer is fully involved in the creation of his personal, unique imsa-Megacar handcrafted according to highest German standards of quality and precision. Additionally, personalised tailor-made interiors inclusive of various multi-media applications are also being fitted on special request.

It came, it saw, it conquered.

Nardo, the epitome of high speed on the fastest oval track in the world.

October 21st, 2007. A 4am wake-up Espresso has to suffice. The remaining drowsiness disappears as soon as the 6.5 ltr. V12, now with 663 hp, is fired up. Re-torque the wheels once again. After checking the pressure of the new Continental V-max tires the edo competition LP 640 Versione Nardo rolls onto the 12.6 km (7.8 miles) long oval. Each contestant has 3 laps: The first one as the warm-up lap, the second one as the highspeed lap and the third one as the cool down lap. By now it’s 6am, the sun is rising over the test track. It’s chilly with light winds, but above all – It’s dry. On this Sunday morning the warm-up lap is driven at speeds between 280 and 300 km/h (174-186 mph). Particular attention is paid to vibrations, oil- and water-temperatures. It feels good, the LP 640, and thanks to the newly developed rear wing it’s so fantastically stable, as if the tires were glued to the south-Italian tarmac.

Now it’s on. The second lap counts and the growl of the V12 is turning into an infernal shriek as the revs rise – similar to a chainsaw cutting through a giant sequoia tree. Wide open throttle is the norm now and even at 280 km/h (174 mph) one is still being pushed into the seat.

Meanwhile in 6th gear the raging bull comfortably eclipses the 340 km/h (211 mph) mark, but there’s more. 345.7 km/h (214.8 mph) is what TUV-Rheinland’s meticulously accurate and incorruptible GPS-based measuring system shows.

Cool down lap – Not without pride the engine is brought back into more sedate rev ranges, with the knowledge to have achieved the fastest ever recorded top speed of a Lamborghini !

Even the newly developed rear wing could prove itself in these extreme conditions. No drop in top speed – far from it, and absolutely stable driving behavior even at these high speeds.

With this result Edo competition has clearly proven that even small modifications like an ECU recalibration, new high flow air filters and high performance catalytic converters specifically designed for the LP 640 can have a resounding effect.

Our thanks go to Mr. Reibchen, Owner of the car, Continental, AutoBildSportscars, TUV-Rheinland and Mr. Thomas Budde, Prof. M.D., who measured the heart rate of Edo Karabegovic and the other pilots during the runs.

While for some test drivers heart rates equaling those of top athletes were measured, our results were well within the comfort range with a peak of 150 beats per minute. Driven by this fantastic success the team of edo competition Motorsport will field the Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640 with considerably more power next time. The goal is 700 hp, which should allow for a top speed in excess of 360 km/h (224 mph).

Alora vediamo 2008!

For the Paris ‘Mondial de l’Automobile’ and to celebrate the Fashion week in Milan, Versace and Lamborghini announced the production of a new, very limited edition model, the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 VERSACE.

This exclusive model was the result of a new partnership between Gianni Versace SPA and the prestigious Automobili Lamborghini SpA based in Sant’Agata, Bologna.

A close collaboration between the Versace designers and the specialists for the ‘Ad Personam’ programme at Lamborghini perfected the already impressive interior found inside the ‘standard’ Murciélago LP640.

The lower section of the dashboard, the doors, the headliner, the central console and the seats were upholstered in a luxurious, full grain, nappa leather, all featuring the distinctive logo of the Versace House, a Greek fret motif, either embossed in the leather or finely stitched.

The Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 VERSACE was equipped with all the options available for this flagship, particularly the new ‘Hermera’ wheels now finished in high gloss black, the Carbon Fiber finish for the interior, the amazing glass engine cover and the well known e-Gear transmission.

The Automobili Lamborghini SpA stand on the Paris Auto Show would display a white ‘Isis’ edition, while during the Fashion Week in Milan, Versace would show the black ‘Nero Aldebaran’ version, the only two colors available for this very exclusive model with a production run of only 10 units !

To lift this rare Lamborghini LP640 VERSACE to an even higher level of luxury there would be a new series of accessories exclusively designed for this model, all hand-made in true Versace ‘Couture’ tradition.

The luggage set, composed of two suitcases (for him and for her) and one suit carrier in matte black calfskin adorned with the Greek fret motif was conceived especially for the luggage room of the Lamborghini Murciélago. On the outside of this set, a special authentication label would show the Versace ‘Couture Limited Edition’ script, this label would be able to open and show some personal information of the owner.

The interior in white satin would also be embroid with the Versace ‘Couture Limited Edition’ logo. Each piece would receive the same serial number as the car it was to be delivered with, this number would be engraved on a plaque inside the luggage.

A pair of driving shoes in blamatt blue calfskin from the Versace ‘Couture Limited Edition’ line and complementary, leather driving gloves completed the luxurious accessory set by Versace.

The ‘Versace Precious Items’ department designed an exclusive watch for the buyers of this car. The ‘Chrono Matt Soft Touch would be available in either a high gloss black or a white ceramic finish, just in case a lady would buy this car, Versace offered a precious ladies watch in glossy white ceramic set with extra clear diamonds.

A few days before the 2006 edition of the famous Geneva Auto Show would open it’s doors, Automobili Lamborghini SpA made a rather unexpected announcement, they would introduce the next step in the Murciélago evolution; the LP640 model.

The LP640 name goes back to the days of the legendary Countach, where LP stood for ‘Longitudinale Posteriore’, just like on the new Murciélago, only the digits now stand for the number of horsepower behind your ears instead of the engine displacement like on the Countach.

A more powerful Murciélago was actually expected, an increase in horsepower would be needed to differentiate the flagship further from the 520 hp Gallardo V10 model, but Automobili Lamborghini SpA didn’t just get more power from the engine, they created a brand new designer suit for their V12.

Since the Murciélago was introduced in 2001 it’s design had hardly aged, it still looks wild and aggressive today and about 2000 cars left the factory at Sant’Agata before this even more radical Murciélago would be available the LP640 edition.

On the outside you would immediately notice the new looks of the car, with a larger front spoiler, that is both deeper and comes further forward than the older one, also the air intakes are now larger. Further to the back of the car you would notice a new windscreen wiper and redesigned rear view mirrors, these latter are now more aerodynamically integrated into the overall design of the Lamborghini.

But than the asymmetrical design hits you, the air intake and exhaust on the left is much larger than the one of the right side of the car and it has a practical reason, because of thermal consideration the enlarged 6.5 Liter engine required a larger oil cooler, hence a larger air flow. Since there is only one oil cooler and it’s mounted at the left of the car, this is where the large air intake is located, putting an equally large intake on the right side would be useless, and on a Lamborghini nothing is there for looks only.

Getting around the car and admiring the back would draw your attention to that massive central mounted exhaust, there was only one of them now and it was large, in every sense of the word, but magnificent at the same time and we don’t even mention the howling sound that emits from it yet.

Beautifully modified taillights now featured LED technology, which was ideal on a car like this since their response is a lot faster than conventional bulbs, so they light up faster when you hit the brakes on this Lamborghini.

Talking about brakes, these became massive 380 mm tall at the front, while the rear ones were still 355 mm tall, which happened to be larger than most other sport cars had on their front axle by the way. These large discs were coupled to a four channel anti-lock system featuring an electronic brake control (DRP) and TCS traction control using an electro-hydraulic controller and four speed sensors.

If all this wasn’t enough for you, there was an even better system on the options list; ceramic brakes with large 380 mm rotors around and six piston calipers, once you would experience these on the Murciélago LP640 you would never want to go back to ‘ordinary’ discs again.

All this material was mounted behind magnificent new Hermera wheels, available in both silver finish and dark titanium finish, and again these wheels reminded you of the asymmetrical design of this new car, with very special spokes, naturally there were five double spokes and the ‘telephone dial’ style of the Countach was still recognizable on them.

But feast your eyes on the next option on the list the glass louvered engine cover which allowed everyone to see that stunning engine, which was heavily reworked on the LP640. The Lamborghini V12 engine still features the ignition sequence on the cover, a detail that would look tacky on other cars, but on the Murciélago it’s accepted..

A continuous variable timing system on both the intake and exhaust had enhanced drivability of this new Lamborghini, there was a displacement of 6.5 liter, obtained by increasing the bore and stroke of the engine to 88 x 86.8mm, with a totally new cylinder head and reworked intake system, power went up to 640 hp at 8000 rpm, giving the new Murciélago more than enough power to outrun just about anything you might encounter on the open road these days.

To keep all this power under control the six speed gearbox had to be modified, and a larger rear differential was installed, a nice touch is the ‘thrust’ mode on the optional e-Gear transmission, all this resulted in an impressive acceleration to 100 Km/h in only 3 seconds flat.

But if you own a car like this, you’ll be on the inside won’t you, so let’s take a look at the new interior of the LP640.

You would be seated on newly designed seats, a little wider than the earlier ones, and with a new headrest design, but the best would be that stunning pattern on the seats lozenge shaped stitching that is listed as ‘Q-citura’ in the brochure, the same pattern was also visible on the door panels, the central console, the roof and the ‘wall’ behind the seats, as an option you could order some really nice sport seats, which closely resemble racing style bucket seats by the way.

Looking past the steering wheel you would notice some new graphics on the dashboard, but glancing to the right should surprise you even more, standard fitment on the LP640 is a Kenwood main unit with a large 6.5 inch screen for the DVD player.

An optional navigation system could replace this Kenwood however, in case you might get lost in your new Lamborghini.

Automobili Lamborghini SpA still offers their ‘Privilegio’ programme on the Murciélago, which means you can order just about anything you heart desired, like wild leather upholstery or a full Carbon Fiber package for the interior and any color you might want, even based on samples if you like, and if your wallet can support it naturally.

Getting into this luxurious interior is still via those trademark doors that swing upwards, fortunately that remains a feature of the Lamborghini flagship, replacing them with ordinary doors would mean pulling the Murciélago from it’s pedestal of exotic super car.

Turn the key in the ignition and that legendary V12 behind you bursts into life with a mind blowing howl, like waking up the devil it isn’t called the Diablo anymore, but the LP640 was probably the fastest way to get there.

At 3500 rpm the sound is amazing, go up to 5000 rpm and there is an important change in note, much deeper and meaner, dare to hit the 8000 rpm limit and the sound is out of this world altogether this car will shatter 100 Mph in second gear only, imagine the speeding tickets you would be getting in a car like this if they can catch you that is.

The Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 is probably the best of the best at this moment, granted it’s not a gran turismo like the new Ferrari 599 or as plush as the Porsche 911 Turbo but this is a Lamborghini, and that’s all that matters. It is brutal, intimidating, aggressive and it costs a small fortune, both to buy and to maintain, but all that is relative, because a super car like this can only be compared to cars like a Zonda, a Bugatti, an Enzo or a Koenigsegg, and all these latter cars cost a lot more, so the Lamborghini is a bargain, order yours today.

It may ultimately not be the quickest car on the market today, but it sure is the best looking one in my opinion, an opinion that is shared with a lot of enthusiasts apparently, waiting lists are getting longer for this new Lamborghini, every single one of the 300 units that will be built in 2006 were sold already, and production for 2007 was selling quickly.
