It started with a battered prototype on a gravel road outside Nardò and three engineers who had no business being there.
Around 2017, CTO Rouven Mohr, Maurizio Reggiani, and designer Mitja Borkert sat down to dinner after testing at Nardò and sketched a goal Mohr described plainly: "an unprecedented super sports car for all surface conditions," something halfway between the Huracán and the Urus.
Borkert's design brief aimed to create something "distinctly different, for active, sporty people who are fun seekers and want to drive the world even beyond roads and race circuits" — Lamborghini wanted to sell driving joy on surfaces where supercars traditionally represent a liability, not a thrill.
All 1,499 production Sterrato units sold out, and according to Autoblog, Lamborghini is now plotting even more extreme special editions in the mold of the Sterrato and the track-focused STO, potentially extending to V12 supercars and SUVs.
