Lamborghini and MIT Patent a Supercapacitor Material That Could Reshape Hypercar Electrification

A Metal-Organic Framework material co-developed with MIT targets a 100% increase in supercapacitor energy density.

Professor Mircea Dincă's team in MIT's Department of Chemistry, backed by Lamborghini's Concept Development Department, synthesized a Metal-Organic Framework material designed to make supercapacitors viable as primary energy storage for future high-performance vehicles.

Supercapacitor technology proven in the Sián FKP 37

The Sián FKP 37 validated supercapacitors in production, using a 48-volt e-motor fed by a supercapacitor unit integrated into the gearbox to add 34 horsepower to its naturally aspirated V12.

Proprietary chemistry as a competitive moat

MOFs can be tuned at the molecular level, letting researchers adjust metal nodes, organic linkers, and pore geometry to optimize performance, giving Lamborghini a bespoke material rather than an off-the-shelf solution.
