To this day the Lamborghini Miura turns heads, and we’ve seen prices at auction rising for many years in a row, to well beyond the 7-figure range, and it is clear why, the Miura was the start for Lamborghini to move away from luxurious Gran Turismo cars and head into supercars and exotics, after the Miura we got the ultimate poster car that adorned countless bedroom walls, the Countach, either just the car or accompanied by some scarcely clothed women, in the Nineties we would see the Countach being succeeded with the Diablo that would lead into the Murciélago before we finally moved onto the Aventador, the current V12 flagship model from Sant’Agata that has reached the end of life now and will be succeeded by a V12 Hybrid model very soon now.

But back to the Lamborghini Miura, the supercar from the Sixties, the car that really made Lamborghini famous around the world in the automotive segment, a force to be reckoned with, and a fierce competitor to the more established brands out there, the likes of Ferrari had nothing even comparable to the Miura, the Miura would become a trendsetter, the world’s first real supercar, and now we get a review from famous YouTuber Doug DeMuro, so let’s take a look at all the ‘quirks and features’ as Doug so aptly puts it in the video below:

But the Miura story started in late 1965 already, when Lamborghini showcased a first iteration of the Miura chassis at the Turin show, at that time with Borrani wire wheels mind you, and history would have it this chassis never had a body installed onto it, it remained in the same shape as in 1965, disappeared out of sight for decades, only to surface again after a complete restoration in 2010 to be subsequently sold in mid-August 2013 for $473,000, a real deal for such a piece of Lamborghini history, I’m sure over the last decade or so, the value has doubled already.

The Lamborghini Miura was built between 1966 and 1972, first as the P400 model (350 bhp, 275 units), from 1969 onward as the more powerful P400 S model with 370 bhp, and from 1971 on we got the most interesting version, the Lamborghini Miura P400 SV, for Spinto Veloce, now with 385 bhp, but sadly only 150 units of the latter were built, making it the most sought-after, and most valuable of the series (apart from the special order SVJ models), rumor has it when the Lamborghini Countach prototype was unveiled at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, and Ferruccio got overwhelmed by the interest for that futuristic yellow supercar, he decided not to order too many Miura bodies from Bertone, and instead focused on the development of the Countach.

Sadly this meant only 150 units of what is considered to be the best Miura iteration of them all would be built, and production was halted in 1972, while it would take Lamborghini another two years to get the Countach LP400 ready for sale by 1974, I’m sure that if Ferruccio had decided to keep the Miura SV in production until 1974, we would have seen many more units, but now the entire Miura production totaled at less than 1,000 units, and one of the most valuable Lamborghini in history is in fact the one-off Miura Roadster, valued at $10,000,000 back in 2013 by renowned Hagerty Insurance.

Created to fill the market gap between Lamborghini’s classic high-performance GT cars and more accessible sports cars, the Marzal was more than a concept—it represented an innovative approach to Lamborghini’s design philosophy.

History of Marzal

In 1967, Ferruccio Lamborghini had two steady sellers on the market, the 400 GT and the P400 Miura, but what he lacked was a full four-seater offering. He had a body designed by Marcello Gandini for Bertone. The car was put on a lengthened Miura chassis, it was designated the TP200 Marzal.

This car was powered by half a Miura engine; the V-12 was cut in half lengthwise, resulting in a two-liter, in-line six, and was mounted transversely in the rear.

All this weight in the rear probably destroyed the road holding, but that was a problem to be dealt with once the car was tested prior to production. The body built by Bertone was too controversial for Ferruccio’s taste; it used no less than 49 Sq.ft. of glass, and even the lower part of the upward swinging gullwing doors were glass-filled. This glass was built in collaboration with the Belgian Glaverbel company, but it was too excessive for even the most eccentric tastes, and the late Ferruccio didn’t like it at all.

However, Bertone thought it could be produced and even built the chassis in his own plant to ensure himself of the rigidity to deal with all that glass.

The interior of the car was finished in bright-silver leather upholstery and provided space for up to four adults. Thanks to the large gullwing doors (in true Mercedes 300SL style), the entry to both the front and rear seats was very easy.

The Marzal was the epitome of the ‘Hexagonitis’-period, through which Bertone was going at that time; everything that was designed at his studios had to resemble, one way or another, an hexagon.

Ferruccio couldn’t be convinced about this car, and it remained strictly a one-off unit that was displayed on various Auto shows on Bertone’s or Lamborghini’s stand.

But the Marzal really became known to the world when it was used by Rainer and Grace of Monaco to open the track at the 1967 Grand Prix of Monaco, some people even claimed this was the only use for this car in parades.

The Marzal made a second public appearance at the 1996 Concours Italiano in Monterey, California, to celebrate Carrozzeria Bertone; the Athon was also exhibited at this time.

Today the Marzal has a prominent place in Ferruccio’s little museum on the shores of Lake Trasmine, although some sources state the Marzal is located in the Bertone Design Study museum.

1967 Lamborghini Marzal Details

Some general information about the car based on what’s been reported about its appearance and limited known features:

• Exterior: Marzal’s exterior was quite revolutionary for its time. It had gull-wing doors made almost entirely of glass, allowing for a panoramic view from inside the car. The design was quite angular, with straight lines and sharp corners, giving it a very distinctive look compared to the more rounded designs common in the 1960s. The overall shape was quite low and long, following the traditional sports car aesthetic.
• Interior: The interior of the Marzal was no less distinctive than its exterior. The seats were covered in silver leather, and the dashboard had an unusual hexagonal theme, with hexagonal patterns on the dashboard itself and hexagonal cutouts in the steering wheel. The car was surprisingly spacious for a sports car, offering room for four passengers in a 2+2 configuration.
• Drivetrain: The Marzal was powered by a 2.0 L inline-six engine, which was essentially half of Lamborghini’s 4.0 L V12. The engine was mounted transversely and connected to a five-speed manual transmission. As a concept car, detailed performance figures were never published, but it was reported to produce approximately 175 horsepower.
• Chassis: Marzal’s chassis was made from steel, and its body panels were made from aluminum. It was reported to have independent suspension all around, but detailed specifications are not available.
• Pricing: As a one-off concept car, the Marzal never had a set price. It was sold at auction in 2011 for €1,512,000.

The Lamborghini Miura – 385hp

In 1971 the Lamborghini Miura SV was built in Sant’Agata, only 150 units would be made eventually, but the transversely placed 4-Liter V12 engine was capable of 385 Bhp at 7,850 rpm at that time … almost 50 years later the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ would be available … with a 6.5-Liter V12 delivering 770 Bhp at 8,500 rpm … exactly double the power output of the legendary Miura SV.

Power output from the flagship V12 engines would steadily grow over the generations, even within the same model, the company kept developing the legendary V12 to perform better and better, in 1965 when the Miura P400 was introduced, power output was 350hp, in the Miura S from 1969 this would grow to 370hp, and by 1971 the ultimate SV version came with 385hp … now there are a few Miura SVJ built at Sant’Agata too, but I couldn’t find any details on increased hp tuning for the engines, so let’s keep it at 385hp for now.

The Lamborghini Countach – 455hp

After the Miura SV, Ferruccio decided it was time for something even more radical … time for the Countach, the first version from 1974 was the LP400, again a 4-Liter V12 engine but mounted longitudinally with an initial power output of 375 Bhp at 8,000 rpm, 10hp less than the Miura SV before.

Then something strange happened, the impressive, wide flared, winged Lamborghini Countach LP400 S from 1978 only had 353 Bhp at 7,500 rpm, it would take until 1982 for the Countach LP500 S to be back to 375 Bhp at 7,000 rpm from a V12 with 4,754 cc (290 ci) displacement … but both S versions were a little underpowered, so Lamborghini took the Countach to the next level by putting four valves per cylinder in the 1985 Countach Quattrovalvole with 455 hp at 7,000 rpm, making it the flagship in the series … the 1988 25th Anniversary edition came with different styling, but kept the same 5,167 cc (315 ci) engine.

The Lamborghini Diablo – 550hp

In 1990 the Lamborghini Diablo took over the reign from the Countach, still a V12 engine, but now enlarged to 5,707 cc (348 ci), power output raised to 492 Bhp at 7,000 rpm, enough to make the Diablo the fastest car at that time, in 1994 the Diablo SE30 would raise power again, this time to 525 Bhp at 7,000 rpm while the 1995 Diablo SV would have to settle for 510 Bhp at 7,100 rpm.

In 1999 a major mid-life remodel happened in the Diablo line up, the 2WD model was dropped, and only the VT, the SV, and the VT Roadster were available, all still with the 5,707cc V12 engine, but now with slightly more power: 530 Bhp at 7,100 rpm …but the final result wasn’t in yet … this would happen only a year later … the swansong of the Diablo range was the VT 6.0 made in 2000, this time the engine was enlarged to 5,992 cc (366 ci) and power output was 550 Bhp at 7,100 rpm.

Actually, the 2000 Diablo VT 6.0 took the engine from another Diablo model, the limited-edition GT, which used the 6-Liter engine first, and was, in fact, a street-legal version of the Diablo GT-R race car, but the Diablo GT was a limited production model of which only 80 would initially be made (in the end a total of 83 were built) … the Diablo GT did deliver an impressive 575 Bhp at 7,300 rpm.

The Lamborghini Murciélago – 670hp

In 2001 the Lamborghini Murciélago was introduced, the original 6.2 version used the by now well-known V12 engine again, but increased the displacement to 6,192 cc (378 ci) with a power output of 580 Bhp at 7,500 rpm, five years later, in 2006, Lamborghini unveiled the Murciélago LP640, with a 6,496 cc (396 ci) V12 engine and a power increase to 640 Bhp at 8,000 rpm … hence the LP640 designation, for ‘Longitudinale Posteriore 640 hp’.

But the famous flagship model in the Murciélago range was without a doubt the 2009 LP670-4 Superveloce model, and as the name suggests, this V12 brute delivered a total of 670 Bhp at 8,000 rpm, the intention was to build 350 units as the swansong to the Murciélago range, but in the end, only 185 left the factory doors before the Aventador took over.

The Lamborghini Aventador – 770hp

At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show the latest V12 model was unveiled, the Lamborghini Aventador, with a modified V12 engine no longer based on the original Bizzarinni design, a displacement of 6,498 cc (396 ci) and a power output of 700 Bhp at 8,250 rpm as the name suggests, four years later the Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce came around, the same engine now made 750 Bhp at 8,400 rpm while in 2017 the Aventador S was shown with 740 Bhp at 8,400 rpm.

The absolute flagship in the Aventador range became the 2019 SVJ version, this time power output was no less than 770 Bhp at 8,500 rpm, and while listed as a limited edition model, with a production number of 900 units it is still outnumbering all the previous V12 generations from the past …and it seems the end of the power increase hasn’t been reached yet as the Sian has the same V12 engine pumping out 785 hp (and an additional 34 hp from the e-motor).

So it seems the horsepower race isn’t over yet, but most likely we’ll be seeing the addition of electric motors from now one to raise power close to, or even beyond the 1,000 mark … only time will tell.

Between 1966 and 1969 a total of 275 Miura P400 would be made before the Miura S was introduced to be built between 1969 and 1971, production reached 140 units … and then it was time for the ultimate Lamborghini Miura, the SV or Spinto Veloce, the most sought-after Miura these days (apart from the original Miura Roadster or the Miura Jota recreation perhaps), only 150 units of the Miura SV were built between 1971 and 1972, the production of the Miura SV was halted after little over a year to be replaced by the amazing Lamborghini Countach.

Today a Miura SV in perfect condition is a very expensive car to buy, but a specific 1971 Lamborghini Miura built on special order for French industrialist Jacques Dembiermont just set a sky-high new record when she sold at the Gooding&Company Passion of a lifetime auction on September 5 at Hampton Court Palace … with an estimate between £1.600.000 and £2.000.000 (that’s €1.800.000-€2.250.000 or $2.125.000-$2.656.000), this very special car reached a high bid of no less than £2.850.000 (€3.200.000 or $3.785.000) before fees, which are usually 10%, so we’re talking about a €3.5 million Miura.

So why is this specific 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV so valuable? Because it’s called an SV Speciale, which means this isn’t one of the standard Miura SV, this car was custom ordered with some very special options straight from the factory. Remember the famous Miura Jota, the car Bob Wallace built in his spare time as a pure-bred race car? Well, that car came with a dry sump lubrication and a ZF limited-slip differential, so when chassis 4878 with engine 30644 was ordered, Mr. Dembiermont wanted those on his Miura SV too.

In May 1971 this Oro Metallizzato Lamborghini Miura SV was ready for delivery, the original owner kept the car for about ten years before it was sold on but stayed in France, later this rare Miura SV Speciale would go to Norway and England … the last owner had the car completely restored by Carrozzeria Autosport and Top Motors before driving it on the open roads in Europe … today this is probably among the most important Miura SV in history, hence the record-setting sales price at auction.

At the same auction the very first production car Lamborghini started making in 1963 was also sold, a 1965 Lamborghini 350GT finished in a stunning dark blue body over a red leather interior, chassis 0226 with engine 0181 received an estimate between £400.000 and £550,000 but was eventually sold for £379,500 before fees (€426.000 or $504.000)

One of these factory original Miura SVJ was chassis #4934 that was built for the Shah of Iran, originally this was a dark blue Miura SV that was taken from the assembly line and received the cutouts in the bodywork, finished in a dark burgundy metallic over a white leather interior, this car was delivered in  St Moritz at the end of 1971 … while a regular Miura SV cost about Lire 8,000,000, the custom-built SVJ version was rumored to add Lire 5,000,000 to this. Note that this specific car was later bought by actor Jonathan Cage in 1997.

Chassis #5090 was the second, original factory built Miura SVJ, and while the first one for the Shah was a Miura SV that was converted, this one was built as an SVJ right from the start to be delivered to a customer in Corsica through the French importer Voitures Paris Monceau, finished in metallic red over a red leather interior, but she was later repainted in grey over blue.

The Lamborghini Miura SVJ on display at the 2020 Rétromobile show in Paris by the Lamborghini Polo Storico department is chassis #4860, and this specific Miura was built for Hubert Hahne, the German importer for Automobili Lamborghini SpA at that time in Dusseldorf. At first, this car was finished in black over a white leather with black cloth interior.

In 1972 this Miura SV was converted into a real SVJ at the factory, by April 1973 Mr Hahne received this very special Miura, probably the only one with a 110 Liter fuel tank …. in 1977 a repaint to silver metallic and full black leather was done at the factory.

This Miura SVJ remained in Germany until the early 2000s, after which she was sold to a Japanese collector that kept the car out of sight ever since until she was recently returned to Sant’Agata to have a ‘preservation’ done by the Polo Storico department to conserve the condition of this very rare Lamborghini Miura SVJ and to preserve her for the future.

I’m sure this is a priceless piece of automotive history for Automobili Lamborghini SpA, and seeing it on display in Paris really is an amazing opportunity to admire such beauty.

The complete rear section of the car was modified, the rear louvers covering the engine were removed, the tail lights changed and the exhaust pipes now went through the lower grill. Various small changes were made to the rear section of the original Miura, like lowering the roof line by 3 cm and changing the angle ‘rake’ of the windscreen. All this was necessary to eliminate undesired turbulence at 300 Km/h even without the roof, which was actually never even built in the end, the Miura Roadster didn’t have a roof panel at all.

Also note the air intakes behind the side windows were larger compared to the factory built Miura to allow more fresh air to be pulled into the engine bay, while the ‘built in’ rear spoiler was also larger than normal on the Roadster in fact Bertone even went as far as strengthening the chassis of their Miura to counteract the fact there was no roof left to keep the car from flexing, as a matter of fact there were no side windows on the Miura Roadster either because the rake of the windshield was modified the original side windows could not be used.

The interior also had to be modified, mainly because the switches from the overhead console found inside the regular Miura had to be installed elsewhere inside the car (they would end up on the central console), and the Bertone steering wheel showed a great similarity with the one found inside the Marzal and the Espada prototype both built by Bertone too.

The car was finished in a bright-metallic azure blue shade, while the interior was upholstered in a magnolia (almost white) dye leather (just like on the first 350 GTV in fact). The impact this show prototype had in Brussels and later on in Geneva was massive, but this was to remain stricktly a one-off, many owners requested a Miura Roadster from the factory, but Automobili Lamborghini SpA never officially delivered a Miura Roadster or even made a replica, while as mentioned earlier Bertone had never built a top or side windows for this prototype.

The Miura Roadster became also known as the Miura Spider or Miura Spyder, but her official denomination was the Miura Roadster, the original car was sold to the ILZRO in 1969, the International Lead and Zinc Research Corporation, a company delivering various metals to the car industry like aluminum, zinc and different alloys.

The ILZRO decided to buy a Miura some time earlier to reconstruct using their own metals and alloys to showcase their technology on various auto shows worldwide, but Lamborghini declined their request for a production Miura however with the Miura Roadster they had an oportunity of a lifetime this wasn’t a production car, so together with Bertone and Lamborghini the ILZRO was able to do just about anything they wanted.

Chassis number 3498 was completely disassembled the moment it arrived in New York, all possible parts were changed into zinc-plated, chrome-plated, polished or re-manufactured using some metal (like lead!) made or distributed by the ILZRO, some of these items included the carburettor bodies, the carburettors stacks, engine covers, transmission covers, oil pump, filter housings, exhaust system, radiator, interior switches, the steering whee, the wheels themselves and both front and rear bumpers.

These modifications were all directed by John Foster, who was actually a designer for Ford. But the result was rather special, the Miura Roadster was converted into the Zn75, an ILZRO show car a mere Miura replica almost, she looked like a Miura, but she was totally different even in her exterior shade.

Bertone usually used bright colors and contrasting black detail work like as seen on the original Miura Roadster prototype, but the Zn75 featured chrome details and was finished in a metallic green sprayed over a black metallic base giving a strange dark green pearl like color (iridescent gold-green), with a contrasting brown leather upholstery it looked totally different from most Lamborghini Miura.

The name also changed, now into the ‘Zn75’, a name taken from the periodic table of metals used for this modification. The Zn75 first appeared in May 1969 after which she was flown all over the world to various Auto Show and shown to automotive companies worldwide, always attracting a lot of attention, when her job was over, the Miura Zn75 was auctioned off to S.F. Radtke, the Executive Vice President of the Ilzro at that time.

In late 1980 the Miura Zn75 was completely refurbished by Synthetex Inc. and valued at $186,000 when Mr Radtke donated the car to the Brookline Museum of Transportation in Massachusets, U.S.A. in February 1981. The Miura was then shown in this museum for a long time were it was for sale at one time for only $ 50,000, later it was restored for the museum by J. Geils from KTR Engineering who was actually on the board at the museum.

After the restoration the car was sold at an unknown auction for a rumored $200,000. Later this rare Miura was auctioned again and bought by David Joliffe of the UK based Portman group, who intended to start a Lamborghini museum featuring this very unique Miura, however the Miura Zn75 was subsequently sold to a Japanese collector, who sold it again to an owner in France before she went to the United States.

The original Miura Zn75 changed hands several times over the last few years before it ended up in the United States, owned by a New York based real estate developer, Adam Gordon who decided to have the car restored to the 1968 Brussels Salon original by the well known Miura restoration specialist Gary Bobileff starting in 2006.

The total restoration of this one of a kind Lamborghini would take about two years before the Miura Roadster would once again be shown in her original 1968 livery at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where she took second place and was driven onto the stage by none other than Valentino Balboni in 40 years the Lamborghini Miura Roadster had covered only 7,444 km in total.

In late 2008 the unique Miura Roadster was offered for sale by the Kidston Auction house, no price was mentioned, but with this being the most important Miura in existance it might even be the most important Lamborghini ever next to the 350GTV prototype being both a Lamborghini factory and a Bertone concept show car, and to really make it even more interesting all the ILZRO Zn75 parts had been meticulously retained you could even build a second Miura Zn75 next to this original Miura Roadster if you wanted.

In 2013 CNN had this very special Lamborghini valued by Hagerty Insurance they came up with a value between $8,000,000 and $10,000,000 making her the most valuable Lamborghini ever, Hagerty Insurance valued the 350GTV at ‘only’ $3,500,000 to $5,000,000.

As usual such a one of a kind prototype had several Miura owner request a Roadster from the factory, but they made no intentions of actually producing an open-top Miura, be it because it would be too expensive to make it road worthy or the fact the removal of the roof caused the body to flex bottom line is the factory refused every request. However some owners took their original Miura to a workshop and had it modified into a Roadster replica by just removing the roof section above the seats.

As far as we know none of these Roadster replicas had the modified rake on the windshield, nor the special, larger air intakes on the side or new engine cover, one of the more famous replica is a white Miura transformed by Herbert Hahne, the German Lamborghini importer, this one also featured wider wheel rims and additional bodywork changes making it look like a Jota Roadster.

Later on this car was repainted in silver metallic and the deep front spoiler and large rear wing were removed before the French owner had her repainted again in a bright green shade note that this Miura did have a roof that could be mounted back in place, unlike the real Miura Roadster still only one Miura Roadster exists, and all the replicas probably only lower the value of the original Miura on which they are built.

By 1968 the improved Lamborghini Miura S was available, chassis #3781 was, in fact, the show car at the 50th Turin Motor Show in 1968, originally she left the factory in Verde Miura over a black interior to be shown at the show, after that she was delivered to Lamborauto in Turin on November 30, 1968.

When Heinz Straber, from Germany, acquired this Miura in 1974 he had her sent back to the factory to have a  very special conversion done … to really understand why we have to go back to 1970, when famous Lamborghini test driver Bob Wallace took chassis #5084 from the assembly line and created the Miura Jota in his spare time, a pure-bred racing machine based on the Miura, using engine 30744 inside a body made from Avional composite on a lightened chassis … fixed headlights, a deep chin spoiler, wide wheel arches and additional air vents and intakes made the Miura Jota look amazing.

On February 8. 1972 the Jota was sold to InterAuto in Brescia sadly a mechanic would become a little over enthusiast showing this car to his girlfriend … he crashed the Bull, ripping the side mounted fuel tanks causing the Jota to catch fire and burn down completely … the fire was so intense most of the bodywork was destroyed, but more importantly, the chassis was warped beyond repair.

The Lamborghini Miura Jota was lost forever, but several inquiries by Miura owners caused a few regular Miura to be rebuilt to a certain level of Jota specifications … some sources call these the Miura SVJ model. Most of these factory replicas only had some bodywork modifications that included the extra intakes and outlets, most of them also got the fuel filler seen on the Jota, only three did get a dry sump lubrication … none of them came even remotely close to the original Jota and were called Miura SVJ, in the end, the factory never accepted to build a second Jota.

So one enthusiast decided to recreate the Jota on his own, UK based Piet Pulford started with a beaten, old Miura (#3033) found in the United States and requested extensive bodywork and chassis modifications from Chris Lawrence (Wymondham Engineering) in Norfolk … note the entire front and rear section were only held onto the Jota by locating pins and Dzus fasteners to allow easy and quick removal. The engine for this Jota recreation was in fact built with help from Bob Wallace himself.

So back to the 1968 Miura S chassis #3781 (engine #2511, body #383), Heinz E. Staber convinced Hubert Hahne to have the factory rebuild this Miura into a Jota inspired model, but unlike the SVJ we already know, this would become a Miura SVR, a more track-oriented version of the SVJ … it would take until April 1976 to finish this Miura SVR with a widened bodywork to fit the massive BBS wheels on Pirelli P7R tires (345/35ZR15 at the rear, the same as on the Countach S model).

A new suspension was installed using Koni dampers to keep the tires as flat as possible, a set of Girling disk brakes from the Porsche 917 found their way behind the gold BBS wheels, on the engine a dry sump conversion was done, modified cams and open funnel Weber carburetors coupled to an ‘open’ exhaust resulted in an increase in power for this 1,330 kg Miura SVR.

A deep chin spoiler up front and a Countach inspired roof wing would keep the Miura SVR stable at high speeds, while a set of black Recaro seats would keep the driver and passenger firmly in place … in 1976 this unique Lamborghini Miura SVR was sold to In 1976 the car was sold to Hiromitsu Ito and made its way to Japan (for a rumoured amount of $550,000), he kept the car for many years, during which a complete, 3 year restoration was performed, during which the interior was replaced with a gold looking leather upholstery.

In late 2015 this one of a kind Lamborghini Miura SVR was for sale in Japan, price on demand only, it seems the car has subsequently been sold and the new owner sent her back to Sant’Agata once more … this time to have her restored by Polo Storico … who took 19 months from start to finish to recreate the original 1974 specs Miura SVR.

Paolo Gabrielli, Lamborghini Head of After Sales and Director of the Polo Storico, said: “The full restoration took 19 months and required a different approach to the way we normally work. The original production sheet wasn’t of much help, as we relied mostly on the specifications from the 1974 modifications. The challenge for the Polo Storico team was even more daunting as the car arrived in Sant’Agata in pieces, although the parts were all there, and with considerable modifications. The only variations on the original specifications were the addition of 4-point safety belts, more supportive seats and a removable roll bar. These were expressly requested by the customer and are intended to improve safety during the car’s racetrack exhibitions.”

When the restoration was finally finished and the Miura SVR was delivered to her owner, she was shown at Japan’s Nakayama Circuit, as a throwback to the Japanese manga “Circuit Wolf” in which the Miura SVR was featured many years ago, and while she may not have the same ‘value’ as the real Miura Jota, or Piet’s recreation, it is safe to say this Miura SVR is another milestone in the history of Lamborghini, and the fact that Polo Storico was able to restore her to her former glory makes her even more valuable.

Probably one of the most sensuous automotive designs ever, the Lamborghini Miura was built in the Sixties, this original, low slung, mid-engine V12 beauty demand a serious investment if you would like to park one in your garage, but in 2006 Lamborghini unveiled their Miura Concept, a modern look at the car that made the Raging Bull marque famous.

Unveiled at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the design for the Miura Concept was created by Walter de Silva, and while he did create a new concept, he remained true to the classic design that was 40 years old at that time … sadly the Miura Concept was never put into production, despite many prospective owners wanted to put down a deposit on-sight … today this one of a kind beauty has a place in the official factory museum in Sant’Agata.

Fast forward to 2018 … freelance designer Kasim Tlibekov from Russia creates the Miura FR, his vision on how a stunningly beautiful car from the Sixties would look 50 years later … and I have to admit … he designed something really impressive.

Just look at those wide fenders up front and at the rear, together with a newly designed front bumper and a totally different rear fascia, now with stylish LED taillights … we can all clearly recognize the legendary Lamborghini Miura in this concept, but still, it has become very modern.

I sure wouldn’t mind seeing this Miura FR as a limited production special from Lamborghini, something like the Sesto Elemento for instance … put a V12 behind the seats (Kasim went for a V8 up front … I wouldn’t do that to be honest) and add a few electric motors … and we get a Miura TPI1050 for instance … Trasversale Posteriore Ibrido with a total of 1,050 hp … that would work for me.

But this is just a virtual, 3D render at the moment … but it never hurts to dream … right?

When the dust settled, and more details became available, we were told this wasn’t a real, million dollar Raging Bull from the Sixties … but a replica, built on a Ford GT40 chassis … wait a minute … a Ford GT40 chassis … that’s almost as mind-blowing as touching a Miura … but rest assured, the GT40 was also a replica made by GT Developments … so all is good in the world of classic supercars again … or is it?

So what’s the story behind this low riding, black painted, over fendered Lamborghini Miura look-alike?

Kato-san loves classic cars, and a Lamborghini Miura is about as classic of a supercar as they come, but problem is, prices have been going up for years, and a decent, original Miura can set you back a cool million US these days … which was a bit steep for Kato-san … so he bought a GT Developments replica of the legendary Ford GT40, a car that did, in fact, inspire Marcello Gandini when he designed the Lamborghini Miura back in the Sixties.

The entire body of the GT40 has been replaced with new parts resembling the Lamborghini Miura, starting with the cockpit … roof, side sills, and doors (complete with sliding side windows) are now almost identical with those found on the Miura Jota, note there are no fins in the intakes behind the side windows.

The front and rear sections are also Miura inspired, they tilt up as an entire unit … funny thing is, to open the rear hood you have to remove the exhaust tips, because they protrude through the lower part of the rear diffuser, they would touch the bodywork if left in place … the front hood features a deep chin spoiler and large vents … again inspired by the legendary Miura Jota.

Even behind the front wheels, on the side, there are large air vents cut out, surrounded by rivets … just like on the Miura Jota and the Miura SVJ, even a fast filler fuel cap can be seen through a hole in the front hood, hiding a very small fuel tank offering a mere 60 Miles autonomy and to complete the 60’s vide a set of Vitaloni Sebring mirrors are screwed on top of the fenders.

To get the trademark look we all know from Kato-san and Liberty Walk, an Ideal Air suspension was installed, this did require some modification to the lower arms to achieve the needed camber angle and wide fender flares have been added … which once again required cutting in to the original Miura replica fenders, add some rivets to the flares and you get the sought-after LB-Works look.

Add the period correct 15-inch wheels from SSR and the look is complete … MkIII rims, 10 inches wide at the front and 12 inches wide at the rear, the offset of -20 and -60 respectively to the front and rear wasn’t even enough to fill the wider fenders, so spacers were required … 60mm up front and 90mm at the rear. Add Yokohama Advan A050 tires in 205/50R15 at the front and 225/50R15 at the rear, and you just know these are being stretched tremendously to fit the wide wheels … personally, I would fit a lot wider at the rear … but that’s me.

Inside is where we notice the fact this isn’t a Lamborghini Miura very quickly … Kato-san settled for the original GT40 replica dashboard in this wide fender creation, he did add the typical, yellow painted roll cage and a modern, Alcantara steering wheel from Momo, but other than that it is still a small, narrow cockpit with a very wide side sill to climb over when attempting to take a seat in those black leather units.

When you do manage to open the engine cover,  you aren’t greeted by that legendary, transversely mounted V12 engine from Sant’Agata … but instead a Ford Performance V8 engine is fitted, it came with the GT Developments GT40 replica … 302ci with four twin-choke Weber carburetors and a custom made set of Wolf headers … with no silencers … this Kato-san Miura wide body is loud … very loud!

So this one-off Kato-san creation has been responsible for a lot of controversies after being unveiled in Tokyo … but despite what your personal view might be, people have already asked to acquire this car from Liberty Walk, so there are customers out there for such a car.

If you like it, or hate it … the fact remains Kato-san has once again created something different, something not-done before … and even if you really despise of it, you have to admire the workmanship and the sheer imagination that has gone into creating the unique in the world (it took six months to build) Lamborghini Miura LB-Works wide fender replica … this car was intended to become a driving ad for Liberty Walk, and I think they succeeded perfectly … this car has been talked about ever since the unveil in Tokyo.

As 2016 comes to an end the factory wanted to make sure the celebration concluded in style, taking the stunning, yellow Lamborghini Miura SV from the Museo Lamborghini on a trip to the famous bull breeding farm in Spain, where the Miura name came from.

175 years ago the Miura farm was founded in Lora de Rio, Andalusia, Spain … when the late Ferruccio Lamborghini visited the farm owned by Don Eduardo Miura back in 1966 he decided to name his new mid-engine, game-changing supercar after those fighting bulls … the Miura farm being one of the oldest and highly reputed ‘ganaderías’ in Spain.

Today this farm is still owned by the Miura family, Eduardo and Antonio are in fact sons of Don Eduardo, and what better way to celebrate the famous Lamborghini Miura than to take one of those amazing cars to the very place that inspired her name, accompanied by six models from the current lineup.

The bright yellow Miura SV was joined by a yellow Aventador, a silver Aventador Superveloce, a blue Aventador Superveloce Roadster, a green Huracan, a red Huracan and an orange Huracan Spyder … on December 2 these seven Bulls drove 600km from Madrid to Lora del Rio to meet the Miura family on their farm.

The Verde Scandal (solid green) shade is one of only six shades selected to celebrate the Miura from the Sixties, Rosso Arancio Miura, Giallo, Nero, Bianco and Blu Tahiti are the other five shades for the upper body. The lower body and wheels are finished in either gold or matte silver, the latter was chosen for this Verde Scandal car.

On the inside you can select one of two shades, either Nero Ade leather or the classic Terra Emilia warm brown shade which was installed in the Hong Kong car, which as an MSRP of HK$8,000,000 including taxes. Furthermore the interior carbon fiber package comes as standard on the Aventador Miura Homage while the special Miura 50th logo is embroidered on the seats and the Lamborghini script gets embroidered on the dashboard.

Each one of the Lamborghini Aventador Miura Homage comes with a special plaque on the dashboard stating ‘1 di 50’ to make sure you know this is a very limited edition model.

The official press release stated most of these 50 units have been sold already, so what if you would really like to add this special edition to your collection? You could try your local dealer and see which shade is still available, or pay a premium to get hold of an existing contract … but there could be another option in the near future …

Remember 1968? At the Brussels Motor Show a very special one-off was unveiled in a bright blue metallic shade … the one of a kind Miura Roadster took center stage and drew a lot of attention with the white leather upholstery combined with bright red carpet … today this amazing Roadster has been valued at €10,000,000 making it the most valuable Lamborghini in history after she was returned to the original specifications during a two year restoration that started in 2006.

Back in the late Sixties Ferruccio Lamborghini had no intention of building a Miura Roadster, this bright blue prototype didn’t even have a roof designed for it … sounds familiar? Just look at the Aventador J and the Veneno Roadster … neither of those two had a roof either. So when the ILZRO offered to buy the Miura Roadster the deal was signed and this one of a kind Lamborghini was shipped to the United States.

Chassis number 3498 arrived in New York and was taken apart to have all possible parts changed into zinc-plated, chrome-plated, polished or re-manufactured using some metal (like lead!) made or distributed by the ILZRO … this created the dark green metallic ZN75 with a warm, brown leather interior.

So if the 50 Aventador Miura Homage units are sold, wouldn’t it be a great idea for Automobili Lamborghini SpA to release an even more limited production run of Aventador Miura Roadster homage, available in either blue metallic over white or dark green metallic over brown, Ad Personam already has the Lambo Vintage leather, a fine semi-aniline leather enhanced with a softer and more natural feel that would look great inside a dark Verde Metallizata Roadster.

Naturally all this is pure speculation, and the images with this article are simply virtualizations of how an Aventador Miura Roadster Homage edition would look … but it is always nice to dream about special Bulls like this, and in the end it might become a reality in 2018 when the Miura Roadster is 50 years old.

Safe to say the Miura has quickly become a solid investment, and when Lamborghini celebrates the 50th anniversary of this model by gathering no less than 20 of these masterpieces they will draw a lot of attention during their 2016 Tour that ended in Florence.

But Automobili Lamborghini SpA went one step further to commemorate these amazing Raging Bulls, remember the 1969 cult film The Italian Job directed by Peter Collinson? The opening scene featured a bright orange Lamborghini Miura … the most iconic sports car at that moment … so Lamborghini decided to do “The Italian Job Reloaded” … celebrating the Miura by actually driving her on the same road as used for this movie.

The climax of the 50th Anniversary Miura Tour event would become a remake of the famous opening scene of this film, taking two Miura from the museum, a P400S and a P400SV, and drive them up the hairpins of state road 27 … part of the Grand St. Bernard pass in the heart of the Italian Alps … hence the name ‘Reloaded’

Actually being able to take two Lamborghini Miura onto the Grand St. Bernard pass was already a serious feat on it’s own as the pass is normally closed at this time of year, an escort from Anas (the Italian government owned company that maintains the roads) and the Polizia Stradale was required to allow these two amazing Lamborghini Miura to drive up the Great St Bernard Pass.

The very first Lamborghini Miura that was restored by the special Lamborghini PoloStorico department was also featured in these celebrations, chassis number #4846 had actually won the Trofeo BMW Group Italia award at the Concorso di Eleganza Villa D’Este, a very prestigious award that is decided by public vote.

The Rosso Arancio Miura finished Aventador took center stage at the Lamborghini stand in Goodwood, with her gold livery on the side sills, bottom of the front bumper and the Dione wheels this Aventador looks really nice, note that the Aventador Miura Homage will be built only 50 times, and most of them are already sold, either in this red shade, in black, in white or in green with gold livery … or in yellow and blu with a silver livery … no other shades are available.

At the 2016 Cartier Style et Luxe Concours d’Elegance at Goodwood the Lamborghini Miura SV chassis number 4846 received the ‘overall winner’ award, Laurent Feniou, managing director of Cartier UK offered this amazing prize to Enrico Maffeo, head of Lamborghini PoloStorico … the department that restored this green metallic, 1971 Geneva show car to her former glory.

In fact this very car was the first complete restoration project at Lamborghini PoloStorico, so getting such an important award at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is a serious confirmation of the quality of work executed at the PoloStorico department.

Next to this very special Miura the Cartier Style et Luxe area showed a series of Lamborghini to celebrate Marcello Gandini, the famous designer responsible for Raging Bulls like the Espada, the Jarama … and the Countach and Diablo … all masterpieces like the Miura …

At the Automobili Lamborghini SpA not only the red Aventador Miura Homage was shown, but also the impressive Huracan Super Trofeo race car and the Huracan Avio, another special edition, but this time based on the V10 model … inside the hospitality a pristine white Huracan Spyder could be admired.

On the ‘track’ at Goodwood another Huracan Avio could be seen at speed, but also a matte grey finished Huracan Spyder … which during the Michelin Supercar Run went up the hill with Goodwood’s Lord March behind the wheel and Stefano Domenicali in the passenger seat …

During 2016 the factory is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of this masterpiece, first with the Miura Tour, a 500km road trip in Italy arriving in Florence, and now with a very special, Ad Personam edition of the current V12 flagship the Aventador Miura Homage special edition.

The Miura was the first V12 supercar in the history of Lamborghini, so the Aventador is a direct descendant of this classic from the Sixties, the Aventador Miura Homage is a special edition created by the Ad Personam department at Sant’Agata, only 50 units will be built to celebrate the 50th birthday of the Miura, and all will come with bespoke details not available on the regular production Aventador.

As a base the LP700-4 model is taken, but in case of the Miura Homage the entire upper body is finished in the same shade, this means the black fins on the vents in front of the windshield and on the large side intakes are now color coded to the rest of the body, while the lower part of the front bumper and the side sills are available in either gold or satin silver as are the Dione wheels just like on the Miura back in the Sixties.

On the side sill the special Miura 50th logo is mounted while the Lamborghini script at the rear is now black instead of chrome, also the section between the vents at the back is finished in black as are the fins on the engine cover remember the louvers on the Miura, the Aventador Miura Homage mimics this look by not using glass fins on the engine cover.

Inside the Miura Homage you can get either Nero or Terra Emilia as the leather upholstery, both with tone-on-tone stitching. The amazing carbon fiber package is a standard fit on the Miura Homage edition while the seats show a ’50’ logo stitched in gold or silver, depending on the outside livery the Lamborghini script on the dashboard is also stitched on in this case.

A special plaque stating ‘Miura 50 Serie Speciale 1 di 50’ is fitted on the side of the dashboard clearly stating the limited edition nature of this V12 at the moment there is no official price released, but most likely there will be a premium over the regular Aventador LP700-4.

Automobili Lamborghini presents the Aventador Miura Homage, a special edition of the current Aventador coupe that pays tribute to the Miura, the forerunner of all V12 Lamborghini super sports cars in its 50th anniversary year. Just 50 units of the car will be produced, the majority of which have already been sold, available in selected markets worldwide.

Created by Lamborghini’s Ad Personam studio, the Aventador Miura Homage reflects the colors and specifications of original Miura models. The upper body in one color is complemented by the lower body and sill in a contrasting tone. The original Miura was produced in a plethora of color and trims, often to the particular specification of a client, with six of the most iconic solid and metallic colorways selected for the Aventador Miura Homage including Rosso Arancio Miura (solid color); Verde Scandal (solid); and Blu Tahiti (metallic)

The Aventador exterior’s homage to the Miura continues with 20″/21″ Dione rims in either matt silver or gold. A metallic Miura badge on the side and black Lamborghini logo on the rear, together with a limited edition plate positioned inside the car clearly denominates the Aventador Miura Homage.

Two internal color options are offered, in full Nero Ade or Terra Emilia leather with tone-on-tone stitching and carbon fiber package as standard. The Miura 50th logo is stitched into the upper part of the seats in gold or silver to reflect the car’s livery, and the ‘Lamborghini’ lettering embroidered on the leather dashboard.

The Aventador Miura Homage’s V12, 6.5 l engine produces 700 hp at 8,250 rpm and maximum torque of 690 Nm at 5,500 rpm. Accelerating from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 2.9 seconds, the Aventador Miura Homage has a top speed of 350 Km/h (217 mph).

The Aventador Miura Homage will be shown as part of Automobili Lamborghini’s celebrations for the Miura’s 50th anniversary at events during 2016, and the first time at Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK from 23 to 26 June.

2016 marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic cars ever in automotive history … the Lamborghini Miura, so this time the factory put together the Miura Tour, the biggest Miura rally organized by Automobili Lamborghini SpA to celebrate this special anniversary.

The 2016 Miura Tour started on June 8 and would run until June 12, during a 500km trip through Italy some of the most amazing cities would be visited by this convoy of 20 different Miura … from Bologna over Parma, Portovenere, Viareggio, Lucca and Florence.

On June 9 the Miura Tour would arrive at the factory in Sant’Agata where a flyby of no less than 4 Eurofighters from the 36th Stormo Caccia (fighter squadron) of the Gioia del Colle airbase near Bari in southern Italy, a very impressive … and loud welcome that coincided with the inauguration of a new, totally renovated Lamborghini Museum.

The Miura Tour would also visit Dallara in Varano de’ Melegari, where the group was welcome by none other than Gian Paolo Dallara himself, while Paolo Stanzani came to Bologna to join the guests and their priceless Miura cars … on June 12 the Miura Tour concluded in Florence with all 20 Miura proudly being displayed in Piazza Ognissanti.

Back in the late Sixties the Miura came as a big surprise from a company that was only in business a few years, but this mid-engine supercar was years ahead of the competition when introduced, and when Peter Collinson needed a special car for the opening scene of ‘The Italian Job’ in 1969 the choice was quickly made … a bright orange Lamborghini Miura would be driven on the Great St Bernard Pass, taking the hairpins at speed … only to have a fatal encounter in a tunnel.

The original Miura used back in 1969 wasn’t destroyed during filming, in fact she has surfaced again in November 2015 when she was offered for sale by UK based Cheshire Classic Cars, who stated this specific Miura was one of only three made in 1968 finished in Arancio Miura, she was driven by factory client manager Enzo Moruzzi to the Gran San Bernardo pass in Italy for 3 days of filming, returned to the factory and dispatched to the Lamborghini dealer Zani on 2nd July 1968 … in late 2015 this car had 19,000 km on the counter and was in perfect condition.

With an iconic movie appearance like this, Automobili Lamborghini SpA had the great idea to take two of their amazing museum cars to the same route used for the movie back in 1969 … the gold finished Miura S and the yellow Miura SV which are usually on display in Sant’Agata.

But there was one little detail … the Great St Bernard Pass is closed at this time of year. Normally the pass in only open to the public from mid-June to mid-September … but for two magnificent looking Lamborghini Miura an exception could be made.

An escort from Anas (the Italian government owned company that maintains the roads) and the Polizia Stradale allowed the pass to be opened just for this celebration event, and not only did two amazing Lamborghini Miura went up the Great St Bernard Pass … they were joined by the people that made this exotic possible back in the Sixties.

Engineer Gian Paolo Dallara and engineer Paolo Stanzani were joined by the actual designer of the Lamborghini Miura, Marcello Gandini who worked for Carrozzeria Bertone back in those days … that were a lot of automotive legends together on one of the most iconic roads in the world … absolutely breathtaking.

The Lamborghini Miura SV (Super Veloce), chassis #4846, was the preproduction model for subsequent Miura SV production. Unveiled at the 1971 Geneva motor show on Bertone’s stand (while Lamborghini showed its new Countach), the car was truly a one-off, carrying over parts from the previous Miura S and introducing new features that would be seen on later SVs.

Lamborghini PoloStorico was appointed a year ago to fully restore chassis #4846 to its perfect original state. The subject of exhaustive research, each detail of the Geneva show car has been respected rather than adopting later production SV parts.

Shown in metallic green Verde Metallizata with tan leather, the restoration of #4846 by PoloStorico has included a complete restrip of the chassis and engine. Using photos and other archived historic documentation, every panel on the Miura has been returned to its original lines and angles and, following the original production sheet and records held by Automobili Lamborghini, every component restored or replaced. Expert Lamborghini craftsmanship and original Lamborghini parts have been used throughout, from bodywork to repainting the car in its original color, refurbishing the interior and overhauling the engine.

Lamborghini PoloStorico officially opened in spring 2015, supporting historic models and Lamborghini’s heritage through four main areas: restoration of historic Lamborghini models; archive management; original Lamborghini spare parts for which around 70% of the historic car parc is covered; and official certification of Lamborghini historic cars.

1966: Miura

The tradition was started back in 1966 with the first Lamborghini to receive a name that tied in very closely with the Raging Bull logo mounted up front … the 1966 Lamborghini Miura, the logo was derived from the fact Ferruccio Lamborghini was a Taurus by birth, a visit in 1962 to the ranch of Don Eduardo Miura Fernández gave Ferruccio the idea to have his cars named after famous bulls, or at least items that tied in closely with bullfighting … his Bull logo was reminiscent of a charging bull anyway.

The Miura was a breed of very large and fierce bulls, the first of the Miura breed was entered into the arena in Madrid back in 1849, in fact the Miura bull breed was created from another famous Spanish bull breed … the Gallardo … doesn’t that one sound familiar too?

1968: Islero

When it was time to replace the 350/400GT with a new model Ferruccio decided to no longer only use an indication of the engine displacement to name his luxurious GT car, but called her the Islero 400GT, where the name Islero was taken from a famous bull that killed matador Manuel Rodriquez back in 1947, the Islero bull was in fact from the fierce Miura breed.

1968: Espada

One of the most successful classic Lamborghini models surely was the Espada, in total over 1,200 units of this ‘Italian Rolls Royce’ would leave the factory in Sant’Agata, powered by a 4 liter V12 up front the Espada could seat 4 people in a luxurious cabin. The name Espada came from bullfighting too, this time it wasn’t the name of an actual bull but Espada is the Spanish word for the matador’s sword, a very important item in the world of bullfighting.

1970: Jarama

In 1970 the Islero was replaced by the Jarama, another 2+2 seater with the V12 in the front, the Jarama would be using a shortened Espada chassis, which made this car a very wide and low riding luxury GT, especially the special treatment of the headlights would make this a really interesting car … to reveal the twin headlights the covers tilt down. While Jarama is a famous Grand Prix track near Madrid in Spain, in case of this Lamborghini the name refers to the breed of some of the fiercest bulls in Spain, bred by Don Manuel de Gavaria in La Mancha, they pastured near the Jarama river in Titulcia.

1972: Urraco

The Lamborghini Urraco was Ferruccio’s attempt to attract more customers and have his factory producing more cars to secure a larger cash flow, the Urraco from 1972 was a V8 instead of the regal V12 flagship, Urraco actually means ‘Little Bull’, a name give to a breed of smaller, but very fierce bulls that showed a black and white hide.

1981: Jalpa

When sales of the Urraco didn’t really help to raise production of an affordable V8 model at Sant’Agata, Ferruccio first tried the targa style with the Silhouette, which was a very good looking car with her wide wheel arches and stunning wheels, but the lack of certification to sell the Silhouette in the United States meant only 52 units would be built … however the evolution into the Jalpa P350 in 1981 did become a reasonable success with about 410 units to be produced, the name was taken from Jalpa Kandachia, another famous breed of fighting bulls.

1990: Diablo

The Diablo name was taken from a particularly ferocious bull raised by the Duke of Veragua in the 19th century, it fought an epic battle with ‘El Chicorro’ in Madrid on July 11. 1869, this animal became legendary and it’s well-known history and name were aggressive enough to be used for a Lamborghini, as you might imagine, Diablo also means Devil in Spanish.

2001: Murciélago

It took Automobili Lamborghini SpA little over 10 years to come up with a successor to the Diablo, the brand new Murciélago was introduced in September 2001 with a name taken from bullfighting: during a fight in 1879, this legendary bull was still standing after 24 stabs from the ‘espada’, the matador’s sword. Pressured by the audience, this fierce bull was kept alive, later it was acquired by Don Antonio Miura, yes, the same guy that bred the famous Miura bulls that named the very first mid-engine road car, the magnificent Lamborghini Miura and started the bull naming tradition for Lamborghini.

2003: Gallardo

When the production of the Jalpa ended there was no entry level Lamborghini anymore, it would take many years before a new, V10 powered model would be introduced in 2003, the Lamborghini Gallardo, a name yet again taken from a breed of fighting bulls, bred by Francisco Gallardo in the 18th century at Santa Maria in Cadiz … a breeding stock of Gallardo bulls would later be acquired by Juan Miura … which would lead to the Miura breed of bulls.

2007: Reventón

The Lamborghini Reventón was a limited edition version of the Murciélago LP640, built only 20 times in 2007 priced at €1,000,000 … by the time this special, matte metallic Bull was unveiled a the IAA in Frankfurt all 20 units were already sold out. Reventón was a fighting bull, owned by the Don Rodriguez family. It is included in the list of the most famous bulls ever and is known for killing the famed bullfighter Felix Guzman in 1943.

2008: Estoque

While not a production car per se, the Lamborghini Estoque drew a lot of attention at the 2008 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris as the first four door model from Lamborghini since the LM002, but the Estoque was more of a successor to the famous Espada … also in name as Estoque is the name for a special type of sword used by bullfighting matadors.

2011: Aventador

The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 was unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show to replace the aging Murciélago, the Aventador was a totally new Raging Bull, designed around a new engine it would become an instant success for Automobili Lamborghini SpA, and just as tradition dictates the Aventador name was taken from bullfighting. Aventador was a bull that fought in October 1993 at the Saragossa Arena in the end it would earn the “Trofeo de la Peña La Madroñera” for its outstanding courage.

2012: Urus

The Lamborghini Urus might be a concept prototype, but a Super Sports SUV based on the Urus will go into production by 2018, and while not specifically taken from bullfighting per se, the name Urus or Aurochs is taken from a now extinct species of very large, wild bulls that lived in Europe, Asia and North Africa. The last surviving Urus died in 1627 in Poland, some of the larger Urus bulls could be as tall as 180cm and weigh an impressive 1,500kg while boasting horns that could be 80cm long.

2013: Veneno

Like the 2007 Reventón being a restyle of the Murciélago, the Lamborghini Veneno was a total redesign of the Aventador. Veneno is the name of one of the strongest and most aggressive fighting bulls ever famous for being one of the fastest bulls in the history of bullfighting. Veneno became popular in 1914, when he fatally wounded the famous torero José Sánchez Rodríguez during the bullfight in the arena Sanlúcar de Barrameda’s, Andalusia, Spain.

2014: Asterion

The Lamborghini Asterion LPI910-4 took her name from a real: Asterion is the name for a mythical Minotaur, a hybrid figure and symbolic crossbreed telling a story of the powerful fusion between intellect and instinct, part man and part bull … which suited the hybrid Asterion perfectly.

2014: Huracán

The first thing you think about with the name Huracán is that it’s Spanish for hurricane, but back in 1879 a bull called Huracán fought in Alicante where it got known for an impressive sense of attack and courage. When we think about the fact the name Cabrera was tought to be used for the new V10 we would also be in the world of bullfighting as Cabrera is also a name of a famous bull.

So with the Lamborghini Miura celebrating her 50th anniversary in 2016, this first mid-engine V12 model from Sant’Agata started the tradition of using names derived from the world of bullfighting to complement the Raging Bull crest taken from the Taurus sign under which Ferruccio Lamborghini was born … the Miura was the first of the breed …

After a lot of persuasion the one of a kind Miura Jota, chassis number 5084  with engine 30744, was sold on February 8. 1972 to InterAuto in Brescia for an undisclosed amount of money … only to be destroyed in an accident with a mechanic behind the wheel. The Miura Jota 5084 was lost forever as the remains were too far gone to ever be restored … however many years later a very close replica would be built on another Miura chassis by UK owner Piet Pulford.

After several owners were left empty handed by the loss of the original Miura Jota and the reluctance of the factory to create another one the next best thing was offered to these fortunate enthusiasts, a modified Miura with Jota inspired design with fixed headlights and several air vents cut into the bodywork, some even had a dry sump lubrication system to allow very hard cornering without the risk of ‘oil starvation’ of that expensive V12 engine.

The factory built Jota replica would be called Miura SVJ, and only four or five were officially built … however there were several, more elaborate replicas made too, not really factory original cars but more customized Miura … some perhaps not a beautiful as original, but at least one was almost as impressive as the original Jota … the 1968 Miura SVR, which is listed for sale in Japan at the time of writing.

Back in 1968 a green Lamborghini Miura chassis number 3781 left the factory doors with engine 2511 heading to Germany, to Heinz E. Steber who enjoyed the car for several years until he got inspired by the track prepared Miura Jota … so in 1975 he convinced Hubert Hahne to have the factory rebuild his Miura into the impressive Miura SVR we know today.

It took the factory until April 1976 to complete the transformation from Miura into Miura SVR … the bodywork was heavily modified and widened to get the Jota looks, to make sure the fenders were nicely filled a set of massive BBS wheels with central locks were mounted, at the rear a pair of Pirelli P7R got installed at 345/35ZR15 … the same size to be used on the Countach S models.

To make sure these wide tires would remain as flat as possible on the street a true race suspension using Koni dampers got fitted together with Girling disk brakes usually found on the Porsche 917 to make sure this Raging Bull could stop even faster than she could accelerate.

And this Miura SVR was fast, a lot faster than original thanks to a dry sump conversion, modified cams and Weber carburetors with open funnels, protected by a mesh to avoid dirt getting into the engine, with a 3920cc displacement and an ‘open’ exhaust system this engine would produce enough power to propel this 1,330 kg Miura to speeds way beyond the limits on the open road.

To keep the Miura SVR stable at high speeds the typical chin spoiler was added to the front while a Countach inspired wing was mounted on the roof of this red beauty … much like the wing found on the first Walter Wolf Countach, the white one with a similar roof wing.

Inside the original brown seats were replaced with a pair of black Recaro racing seats and four-point racing harness seat belts to keep the driver strapped in during his high speed stints while he could listen to a Blaupunkt audio system … or even better, that V12 engine just behind his back.

About 40 years ago this truly unique Miura SVR was sold to a collector in Japan for a rumored amount of $550,000 … a lot of money back in the late Seventies, the car would remain in the hands of the same person during her stay in Japan … where Miura 3781 went through a complete, three year restoration that has just been finished a few years ago and that included changing the interior into this gold imitation leather we see today.

At the time of writing this one of a kind Miura SVR was listed for sale by Bingosports … price on demand only, but with the real Jota lost forever and the recreation Jota in the UK not being listed for sale … this SVR is the next best thing, so don’t expect it to be cheap.

During the Mecum Auction in Monterey lot nr S66, a 1969 Lamborghini Miura S, serial number 4289 with engine number 30141 managed to reach a record high US $ 2,300,000 before the hammer came down. With an estimate between $1,500,000 and $1,750,000 I’m sure this was very nice surprise for the owner of this car seeing the price going way over the estimate.

This was a numbers matching Miura S with only 49,000 km on the counter, originally sold in Italy on August 14. 1969 this Miura S still shows the original paint and leather … 46 years later! A nice detail is the fact this specific car was sold in 1973 for only $7,900, owned for the next 41 years by the same person who had a complete engine and transmission revision before she changed hands again in 2014, and sold at auction in August 2015.

While the Miura S at Mecum reached new records for the model, a 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV managed to go just a little bit higher during an RM Sotheby auction in Monterey, reaching US $2,475,000 in the end.

Back in 1971 this was the car to own if you had the money, sold at $21,000 in those days, this 385 hp race car for the open road was unlike anything else on the open road. This specific car was chassis number 4906 and was production number 650 when she was finished on July 23. 1971 with engine number 30651, painted in Rosso Corsa over a Nero interior she was sold by S.E.A. in Rome.

About ten years later this Miura SV would be shipped to the United States while in 1994 she was ‘refreshed’ by renowned Gary Bobileff … with 21,000 km on the odometer. In 1997 she changed hands once again and the new owner had a complete, no-expense-spared concourse restoration done by Jeff Stephan. During this restoration the interior was upholstered in new, biscuit shaded leather while the body was repainted … but in the original Rosso Corsa shade, now with gold wheels and side sills.

At the 2001 Concorso Italiano in Monterey this Miura SV took ‘Best of Show’, leaving 24 other Miura behind her … and this winning streak continued over the years, with a Miura ‘First in class’ at Concorso Italiano 2007, Best of Show at the Thousand Oaks Car Classic and Best in Class at the 2010 Avila Beach Concours d’Elegance … in early 2012 she was sold once again to be offered up for auction in 2015 and selling for $2,475,000.

As much as I love the Miura, for me personally one of the most interesting Bulls offered at the Monterey auction was a 2008 Lamborghini Reventon, number 7 of only 20 made, the Reventon was a special model built on the Murcielago LP640 back in 2008 … at that time listed at €1,000,000 before taxes … in mid-August 2015 chassis number ZHWBU77S08LA03269 sold for $1,375,000.

With a mere 900 Miles on the counter, this specific Reventon was originally sold by Lamborghini Dallas to her first owner Erich Spangenburg, who sold her again rather quickly to the owner that offered her up for auction now … she comes complete with all manuals, addendum and the Kenwood stereo remote to offer a rare chance of owning one of the most iconic Lamborghini in recent times … keep in mind the Reventon was the ultimate car back in the Murcielago era, much like the Veneno is the ultimate Aventador today.

And just like the Lamborghini Veneno, the Reventon came in only one shade … a special matte grey that used tiny metallic sparkles to get a green hue over the car … the Reventon was one of the first production cars that came with a matte finish.

The next million dollar Lamborghini to change hands at the 2015 Monterey auctions was a beautiful, Blu Tahiti 1976 Countach LP400 ‘Periscopio’, with only two owners from new, this original narrow body Countach with chassis number 1120172 and engine number 1120174 was finished on December 22. 1975 … to be delivered in Canada on January 29. 1976.

In the early Nineties this Countach changed hands for the first time, but when the new owner also bought a 1989 Countach he put this classic LP400 into storage … but not before having a complete restoration done, the fluids drained and put into a climate controlled garage … for the next 20 years.

At the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this Countach was brought back to life … to come in second in the Lamborghini class before being taken back to Canada where she would remain until being offered for auction in 2015 … to be sold for US $ 1,320,000.

Our next Lamborghini almost made it into the ‘million dollar’ club, at US $935,000 this pristine looking 1965 Lamborghini 400 GT changed hands at Monterey, but there is more than meets the eye when it comes to this 1965 GT … there was no 400 GT before 1966!

Chassis number 0220 was completed in Sant’Agata on July 7, 1965 in Grigio Saint-Vincent over a Tobacco brown interior and sold to Marquis Alessandro Cisa Asinari di Grésy, of Galliate, Novara … when he heard about the optional 4-Liter engine being offered in 1966, and being an avid car enthusiast, he wrote a letter in May 1966 to have his car converted into a 400GT, so we are looking at a 1965 400GT two-seater now.

In 1974 the car came to the United States after Jim Kaminski bought it, the founder of the Lamborghini Owners Club in the US … Jim would take meticulous care of this classic V12 until 2013 when Mario Velardo bought her, he had a full engine rebuild done by Auto Elite, later the car was completely restored by none other than Gary Bobileff … including a bare metal repaint over a two year project.

Two more Lamborghini changed hands after the 2015 Monterey auction weekend, up first a 1969 Lamborghini Islero S that looked absolutely brand new, the red paint work suited this angular car perfectly and the tan leather upholstery is just amazing.

Chassis number 6531 with engine 50179 is one of only 100 ever built as this is the Islero S version, delivered to Foitek in Switzerland on July 25, 1969 and sold to Garage W.Ruf AG later that year … for the next 20 years this Islero would remain in Switzerland, but in 1989 she was shipped to the United States with 25,000 km on the counter … were once again Gary Bobileff would perform a $100,000 cosmetic restoration on her … by 2010 the car was owned by a Japanese collector who had the engine and transmission rebuilt at Bobileff too … another $45,000 was spent … at the 2015 Monterey auction this classic Lamborghini Islero S sold for US $401,000.

Last, but certainly not least in our overview of the Lamborghini at the 2015 Monterey auctions is this intimidating black 1988 Lamborghini Countach Quattrovalvole that managed to reach US $368,500 before being sold.

Chassis number ZA9CA05A4JLA12214 was sold back in October 1987 for $135,850 and came with the factory optional rear wing … the black paint and black leather interior are still original but the car did get a complete mechanical service and a thorough detailing session … even the Pirelli P7 tires are still original on this 2,800 Mile V12 beauty.

It is safe to say the window of opportunity is quickly closing to get hold of a Lamborghini for a low price as the value of every classic model has been going up over the last few years, today even the Diablo has been getting more and more expensive … at the moment the Murcielago and the Gallardo are the only Lamborghini that are not increasing in price … yet.

“I think it’s the car that put Lamborghini on the map,” says Dennis Varni, and we’d have to agree.

Owner of a stunning Miura P400 S since 1979, Varni is an enthusiast with varied tastes, from Bonneville Salt Flats racers to a Fiat Topolino. But the Miura…the Miura is in a league of its own. It’s also something that he’d lusted after since he first laid eyes upon one.

“These things were $19,000 new in those days, and I’d just bought a house with my wife for $11,000 in 1966, and I said, ‘I’ll never be able to own one of these’.”

But less than a decade later, he did. And as a long-time owner who was originally into hot rods, he’s enjoyed how the car has opened his eyes into a world of European sports cars.

“The most redeeming thing about the Miura would be the fact that there’s only so many of them. it’s highly collectable, it’s exciting, because it’s unusual, it’s small, it’s exotic—it’s still exotic today. And it was significant in its styling.”

“I hope I get to stay around a long time, and play with all my toys, and then when I go someone else will have them,” he says. With a vast appreciation for all things automobile, we hope that Varni continues to enjoy his beloved Miura for a long time to come

At a recent Arizona auction put together by renowned RM Auctions in mid January 2015 prices for Raging Bulls reflected this trend once again with a 1971 Lamborghini Miura SVJ going under the hammer for a final bid of $ 1,897,500 and a beautiful, early Lamborghini Countach LP400S from 1979 changing hands for a cool $750,000.

Now that 1971 Miura was one of only a very few to have been built by the factory between 1971 and 1975 after several owners requested a ‘Jota’ replica of their own when the original Miura Jota was lost in an accident (but a near exact replica was later built in the UK). So in the Seventies several ‘normal’ Miura would be converted into SVJ or SVR models by using parts derived from the actual Jota … like fixed headlights, riveted air vents and most importantly dry sump lubrication and increased power output … some sources state 7 official Miura SVJ were built, but a number of only 5 is deemed more accurate.

This Miura SVJ chassis number 4892 with engine #30640 was originally Bertone body 636 destined for a Miura SV on the assembly line in June 1971, originally finished in white over a blue interior and delivered to an owner in Rome … but an official 1974 document from the Lamborghini Factory confirms this P400 Miura as being an SV Mod. Jota … subsequently she was repainted in red and exported to Japan where it would receive a frame-off, two-year restoration in the late Eighties.

By 2007 this very special Lamborghini Miura SVJ came to the United States where Claudio Zampolli confirmed 4892 as being one of the original, factory converted cars with all the correct features of the SV-Jota model … a total ground-up restoration was performed by Gary Bobileff in a time span of over two years and at a cost of $225,000 to finish the car in Rosso Granada.

On October 27, 2010 this rare, 385hp Lamborghini Miura SVJ was sold at auction for £728,000 (about $1,100,000) in London, UK … little over four years later the same car was again offered at auction with an estimate between $2,000,000 and $2,600,000 … this beauty nearly reached her estimate while almost doubling in value at a final bid of $1,897,500 in Arizona on January 15, 2015.

The second most expensive Lamborghini at the RM Auctions Arizona venue was again a Miura, this time a very nice black 1970 P400S was listed as lot 212 with estimate between $1,000,000 and $1,400,000 … this 370hp black Bull featured a beautiful Champagne interior complete with bright leather steering wheel, factory air conditioning, vented disc brakes and uprated SV specs chassis.

Chassis number 4707 was delivered in October 1970 when it left the factory in white over a black interior, by 1984 the Miura was imported into the United States of America in the current black over Champagne color combination and resided in a private collection where she was driven until 1996 before being put on display next to several other classic exotics … making this today a very original Miura ready to be enjoyed as-is or the perfect basis for a restoration.

On Friday, January 16, 2015 this black Lamborghini Miura P400S received a high bid of $975,000 … just $25,000 below the estimate.

Third place at the Arizona auction in the list of Lamborghini was a very nice, blue 1979 Countach LP400S … one of the Series I models with the highly sought after Campagnolo Bravo style wheels and small dials … only 50 of these were ever made, and this one having chassis number 1121096 was in fact the second to last US-federalized car and the third to last ever made at the factory … making it a serious milestone in the Countach history.

This Countach came in an amazing looking Tahiti Blue paint over gold finished wheels, a blue interior and the larger Weber 45 DCOE carburetors before it was delivered to her first owner in the US that would keep her for over 20 years … during which time the interior was replaced with a black leather upholstery.

For the Arizona auction this specific Lamborghini Countach LP400S was estimated between $800,000 and $1,000,000 … on Friday it was sold for $725,000 … not really reaching the estimate however.

Now the fourth one on the list of most expensive Lamborghini at this RM Auctions venue did reach her estimate, a very nice looking black over black 1988 Lamborghini Countach Quattrovalvole … complete with gold painted wheels and the massive rear wing this iconic V12 Bull showed less than 600km on the counter after only two owners in nearly 30 years.

Being an original US specs Quattrovalvole this black Countach comes with the special front bumper and rear pads required to make her street legal in the United States, the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection replaced the Weber carburetors used in Europe for the US market and being a late 1988 model this one also received the special side sills that would be used on the Countach 25th Anniversary edition later on.

This black beauty rarely left her garage space, she was only started on a regular basis and driven around the block to make sure the engine and drivetrain would remain in perfect working order, warming up the fluids inside the massive 420hp V12 engine … put up for auction with an estimate between $400,000 and $600,000 chassis number JLA12322 reached a very respectable $467,500 sale price.

Three more Lamborghini switched owners at the RM Auctions Arizona venue, but for prices well below the $200,000 mark.

The massive 1989 Lamborghini LM002 came to auction with an estimate between $175,000 and $225,000 … with only 301 ever built and very few still in existance today, this LM002 (KLA12156) was finished in red over a black leather interior rolling on the factory original steel wheels with Pirelli Scorpion tires.

The LM002 wasn’t known for her feul economy, and despite being owned by the same owner for the past 23 years, this mammoth only covered 18,000 miles in total and apart from the wood trim on the interior remains completely original … just like the day she left the factory in Sant’Agata to be shipped to the United States … unlike anything else you might encounter on the open road, this LM002 managed to reach a winning bid of $170,500.

We all know the amazing Lamborghini Gallardo and the current Huracan … but remember Lamborghini tried their hand at an ‘entry level’ bull before. Back in the Seventies the first step into this market segment was made with the Lamborghini Urraco P250, later succeeded by the Urraco P300, the Silhouette and the Jalpa.

A very nice 1975 Urraco P111 was listed at this auction, estimated between $100,000 and $120,000 this 180hp US version of the Urraco P250 was one of only 21 US-specs models, chassis number 15878 originally left the factory in black over black before covering a total of about 39,000 miles during which a total restoration was performed by well-known Bobileff Motorcar Company complete with a color change to bright red on the outside and a tan leather upholstery on the inside. Add the black suede dashboard and black carpets and this Urraco looks brand new … and drives like a brand new car too as the engine was rebuilt together with a complete suspension overhaul.

It didn’t come as much of a surprise this near perfect unit of the Lamborghini Urraco P111 exceeded her estimate with a final bid of $126,500 … a very impressive amount for a Lamborghini that has almost been forgotten by some car enthusiasts only a few years ago.

The classic 1973 Lamborghini Espada Series III was offered with no reserve estimated between $125,000 and $175,000. With only 483 built in the Seventies this 350hp Raging Bull could easily seat four people and still reach speeds you wouldn’t believe on the open road … often called the Italian Rolls Royce, the Lamborghini Espada remains a milestone in the history of Automobili Lamborghini SpA … that right up to today hasn’t been replicated.

Despite the beautiful Lamborghini Estoque concept shown in Paris several years ago, and the Lamborghini Urus SUV unveiled more recently there is no four seat Lamborghini available right now, making this classic Lamborghini Espada even more interesting … still she didn’t manage to reach her estimate at the auction, changing hands for $110,000 in the end.

Prices for Lamborghini, and more specifically the more classic V12 exotics like the Miura and Countach have been rising steadily … but we’ve still not reached the levels of the counterparts from Maranello … at this very auction the most expensive car was again a Ferrari, more specifically a rare 1964 Ferrari 250 LM that sold for $9,625,000, followed by a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 at $3,657,500 and a 1969 Ferrari 365 GTS at $3,450,000 … and one I actually do like … the 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider, despite being a silver one and not a black one like the Miami Vice car (I know, that one was only a replica) this convertible Daytona went for $3,300,000 … just ahead of a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Sport Cabriolet A at $3,100,000 and another Ferrari, the special 288 GTO from 1984 sold for $2,750,000 … the 1971 Miura SVJ was in fact only ninth on the list of most expensive cars sold.
