Automobili Lamborghini SpA was only founded in 1963, but they managed to take the world by storm by presenting a mid engine road car at the 1965 Turin Auto Show, well the chassis that is.

This amazing layout was a first for a road car and the late Ferruccio Lamborghini had the idea of building this super car in very limited numbers only to make his company name better known throughout the world, however things turned out differently.

Bertone was awarded the task to design a body over this lightweight chassis with it’s 4-Liter V12 engine sitting transversely behind the driver and his passenger, Marcello Gandini would create a masterpiece, the Lamborghini Miura was a stunning car with staggering performance, it would secure Lamborghini’s place in the history books forever.

Even today the Miura is still an icon of automotive design, it’s simple and pure lines still look as fresh today as it did over 40 years ago, and current market prices reflect this, recently the restoration of the unique Miura Roadster was undertaken, this specific car is now available for sale in Switzerland with an undisclosed price tag, but expect it to be close to the US $ 1,000,000 mark, a rumored bid on the re-creation of the Miura Jota for this amount was recently denied and we’ve seen pristine Miura SV changing hands for well over US $500,000 the last months

It is clear that any Miura will fetch a high price these days, especially if it has a good history, so how about the one and only prototype chassis as shown in Turin in 1965 ? That would be a nice prize to add to your collection, and it just became a reality !

After the chassis returned from the Turin Auto Show it was stored at the factory, development of the Miura continued on a second chassis with re-positioned radiator and other modifications, this led the original chassis to be somewhat forgotten by the management … until 1977 when Mr Marios Kritikos, the official Lamborghini importer for Cyprus was visiting the factory and came eye to eye with this unique piece of Lamborghini history.

He convinced them to sell it to him and in April 1978 he took away the original Miura prototype chassis on a trailer behind is own Range Rover. Marios still owns the chassis today, together with the original invoice from 1978 and numerous photographs of the chassis dating back as early as 1965. However this one of a kind chassis has left Cyprus by now … it is located in the United States were it will be restored to it’s original glory by none other than Gary Bobileff, who with the help of Joe Sackey, long time Lamborghini specialist (who also published the Miura Bible recently) managed to get the order … the chassis will be ready for a second unveiling in the summer of 2009.

If you take into account that Bobileff also restored the stunning Miura Roadster back to it’s Brussels prototype shape we can rest assure that this chassis will once again look stunning, and correct to the period it was built, the Miura Roadster was a stunning work of art, even more so after it’s restoration.
