The Lamborghini Squadra Corse department is actually building their Huracan Super Trofeo and Huracan GT3 race cars on the same assembly line as the street-legal V10 models, this results in a much higher level of quality control and faster build times.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="wp-image-18341 size-full" src="https://www.
When one of the Super Trofeo or GT3 cars enters the assembly process a team of specialized Squadra Corse engineers will be following that car through the various stations during the build to make sure it is race ready.

The Huracan Super Trofeo started her career in the 2015 season, racing in Europe, North America, Asia … and now also in the Middle East, in total more than 140 units of this version have been assembled at the factory (note that only 109 Gallardo Super Trofeo race cars were built over a period of 6 years).

The flagship race car from Sant’Agata is the Huracan GT3, because of modified aerodynamics and different suspension settings (developed together with renowned Dallara), made an impressive debut in 2015 by winning the Blancpain GT Series in Monza. To date almost 60 units of the GT3 have been built, 40 of which competed in the 2016 GT season … taking 52 podium finishes, 18 overall victories with 22 pole positions … 2 titles have been secured with the Huracan GT3.

The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo European series got underway in Monza this weekend, with its largest ever grid of 22 cars, new teams and drivers, an all-new Gallardo race car and a fulfilled promise of exciting racing on the legendary Italian circuit.

Weekend Fast Facts
Over the Monza weekend, the new Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo recorded 1.5s improvement in best lap time compared to the record set in 2012
Laurent Jenny recorded his best weekend in three seasons
Amici climbed 16 places to win in race 2
Prior to retirement, 17 year old Alessandra Brena was setting lap times inside the top ten
And prior to his puncture, Adrian Zaugg held a lead of over 6s in the second race
The fastest legal pitstop of race one was Imperiale driver Andrea Solime and race two was newcomers Automobili Lamborghini Racing Team Germany with Erwin Stückle

Race 1
The early Sunday start for the first race of the season saw Adrian Zaugg take up position at the front of the grid, an advantage he struggled to maintain on the rolling start as the field bunched into turn 1, with a variety of small taps, bumps and gravel excursions throughout the midfield. Amici presented Zaugg’s early challenge, until unexpected brake problems in the newly improved system forced the Italian driver’s retirement on lap 12. The chase was taken up by Davide Stancheris, Automobili Lamborghini Racing Team Germany newcomer Marcel Leipert and Cédric Leimer behind the hard-charging South African.

Remarkably, amid this leading cluster of pursing cars was Andrea Mamé, who had suffered a high speed accident during qualifying, destroying his car but thanks to the integrity of the Gallardo and his bravery, had returned to the grid the following day with his confidence undiminished for the race.

As the pit window approached, two strong performances emerged; after starting the race from the back of the grid, Automobili Lamborghini Racing Team UK driver Jason Yeomans passed eight cars in seven laps to reach p13, while Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo’s youngest ever race starter, 17 year old Alessandra Brena, had climbed six places from 17th on the grid to P11; however, the progress of the Imperiale car was halted on lap 15 after the driver change when her team-mate, Swede Oscar Ortfeldt crashed heavily following a puncture, and the Safety Car was deployed.

The re-start providing a sharp 6 minute finale to the race, with Adrian Zaugg’s team-mate, Frederico De Nora having lost all his advantage behind the Safety Car and by lap 22, he finally succumbed to intense pressure from Cédric Leimer and the 2012 Champion who claimed the first win of the year. De Nora was followed home by Laurent Jenny, the Swiss Autovitesse driver joining his countryman and stablemate on the podium and taking maximum points for the Amateur class.

Race 2
Race 2 was a remarkable recovery story as Andrea Amici drove from 16th on the grid to P6 before the stops and thereafter on to the win, claimed on the outside of the last corner of the race as he overtook an in-form Cédric Leimer. The other contender, Adrian Zaugg saw his leading challenge fade on lap ten as a puncture forced his retirement.

After an impressive first race for the VIP #1 car that saw Italian TV celebrity Jimmy Ghione across the finish line in 8th place, race two was more of a torrid affair as the car suffered a brake problem necessitating additional pitstops and the occasional trip through the gravel. Lamborghini test driver Mario Fasanetto and Ghione were forced to retire on lap 17.

Meanwhile Laurent Jenny maintained his consistent form to claim his second podium in the space of a few hours, followed him by the remarkable come-back story of Andrea Mamé and Mirko Zanardini who finished in fourth to close out a weekend of drama and a compelling start to the 2013 season.

Driver Quotes

Cédric Leimer #63, Autovitesse Garage R. Affolter Winner (race 1) & P2 (race 2):
“It has been a fantastic racing weekend and certainly a good way to start the championship with a win in the first race and second position in the second. I had a good start in the morning race and managed to go from fifth to second before the pit stop, but the distance to the leader was quite substantial. After the pit stop, the safety car allowed me to close the gap to De Nora. I kept applying pressure and the car was working a lot better towards the end, which allowed me to make the pass on the last lap. I started the second race from pole, but Zaugg was incredibly quick and he got me and pulled away in the early stages, but then he had to retire and we had a good pit stop, so I thought I might have a chance for a second win. But Amici was coming at lightning speed. We had an enjoyable battle and I managed to stay ahead until the last corner, but he finally got me. The second position is good and the two results gives us a solid lead in the Championship.”

Andrea Amici #54, Autocarrozzeria Imperiale S.R.L. NC (race 1) & Winner (race 2):
“After having to retire in the first race, I was very focused for the second and we did a fantastic job. The race was a hard battle one and I had to play catch up as I started from the sixteenth position. I had a good start and gained five positions on the first lap. I kept on pushing because we had chosen to start with a car set-up that was meant to work better at the beginning of the race, so it was important to move ahead quickly. I climbed to fifth before the pit stop and, after a spotless change, we had only lost a couple positions and I was right behind Leimer. I kept the pressure on and I thought maybe I couldn’t make it, but I finally overtook him on the outside on Parabolica right before the chequered flag. I am delighted with the result that wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and support of Autocarrozzeria Imperiale.”

Laurent Jenny #19, Autovitesse Garage R. Affolter P3 (race 1) & P3 (race 2):
“I couldn’t be any happier. Today’s races went perfectly and I finished both as the first Amateur driver. The car felt perfectly balanced and responsive in both races and I have managed to adapt my driving to the circumstances and staying focused for the entire duration of both races. This is my best result of the three seasons that I have raced in Super Trofeo and it is thanks to a spotless teamwork, for which I want to say thanks to Autovitesse Garage R. Affolter and to Cédric Leimer, who is not only my best friend but the best mentor anyone could have. And I also want to congratulate Lamborghini because the new Gallardo LP 570-4 is superb.”

Andrea Mamé #11, Bonaldi Motorsport P6 (race 1) & P4 (race 2):
“I had an impressive crash yesterday in qualifying and it was important for me to have a couple of good races today. I guess that I will feel a bit battered tonight but I am still amazed by the car’s safety, as it was a hard impact at around 180 kph. In any case, I felt perfectly fit to race today and we managed a very good result in both races. We battled for the podium, but on the last lap we had to switch to safety mode and we finished sixth in race one, and fourth in race two. Considering what has happened this weekend, these are good results for us.”

Lamborghini hasn’t been into racing like some of the competition for many years, still a few attempts have been made in the past when engines were supplied to some Formula One teams, in 1996 the already impressive Diablo SV was converted into a race car for the Philippe Charriol Supersport Trophy while 1999 saw the Diablo GTR Supertrophy on the race track.

The monomarque style these Raging Bulls competed in looked like a great concept and when the Gallardo reached maturity the Super Trofeo championship was inaugurated … offering both professional drivers and gentleman drivers to take the wheel of a V10 race car on a select number of tracks in Europe, later expanded into Asia by the way.

In-between we saw the awesome Murciélago R-GT and R-SV developed by Reiter Engineering GmbH competing in famous 24h races like LeMans and Spa Francorchamps, but also in FIA GT1 championships and even in the LeMans Series (the LMS) where this V12 flagship encountered competition from LMP models, or the LeMans Prototype series … and this latter is exactly where the concept shown here could compete … meet the Lamborghini LMP-F Concept from Sabino Design.

Naturally it isn’t an official Lamborghini concept, but Dutch based designer Sabino Leerentveld sure did a very good job at creating an LMP race car with a Lamborghini pedigree, even the matte black shade looks right at home combined with the gold lettering … a but too ‘John Player Special’ perhaps, but still the Raging Bull logo is a gold one on the official Lamborghini logo.

The name for this concept came from Sabino’s combined interest in both LeMans Prototype racing and Formula One … hence LMP-F, according to Sabino power could be derived from a 3 liter V12 engine pumping out 1200hp while being mounted in a lightweight frame, this race car should put only 700kg on the scales … now that is one hell of a power to weight ratio.

Now I don’t think Automobili Lamborghini SpA is considering something like this to enter the LeMans Series or make a new attempt into Formula One racing … but take a closer look at this design, it is in fact a two seater. Sabino made the remark that a co-driver would be needed to monitor the electronics of his LMP-F during the race so the driver only needs to concentrate on driving … much like in off-shore powerboat racing I guess.

But such a two seater setup would also offer a totally different possibility … think about it, we’ve seen the one of a kind Lamborghini Aventador J in Geneva in 2012, only one was built and it was sold right on the spot for a serious amount of money. The Aventador J looked very impressive, and many think it is a preview of the Super Veloce version of the Aventador … but with only one available several customers were left out in the cold.

In comes the Sesto Elemento, a magnificent concept shown back in 2010 in Paris … that will now be built in a limited production run of 20 units, priced at 2,000,000 Euro each it is already sold out too, and what’s even more: it isn’t street legal in most parts of the world and it isn’t a race car either (there is no roll over cage) … so it is a track event car like the Ferrari FXX … you can own it, but you can only drive it on private grounds and race tracks.

Back to this Lamborghini LMP-F, it features two seats just like the Aventador J and Sesto Elemento … and similar to the J it doesn’t have a roof … it isn’t an ‘open wheel’ car either, add some safety measures and I think it could be possible to turn this into a radical, street legal ultra racy limited edition Lamborghini.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to see something like this on the road using experience gained from the race inspired suspension pushrod built into the Aventador combined with a carbon fiber monocoque that has been developed by Lamborghini in their very own CFRP facility, I’m sure they would be able to build a car like this in a very limited production run and sell it for at least 2,000,000 Euro like the Sesto Elemento … with the added bonus of driving it on the open road.

But this is unlikely to happen I guess … still it is really nice to dream about it right?

We already knew about the Super Trofeo series going to Asia, but now we’ve seen the inaugural race, and just like in Europe during the last four years, the race on the Sepang International Circuit was very interesting with no less than 18 teams comprised of drivers from China, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan … this two-race weekend once again showed the Blancpain race car results in some amazing competitive racing.

Over in Asia the Super Trofeo Series will be held on some of the most important, and well-known race tracks, starting out on Sepang the Series continues in Fuji, Ordos, Zhuhai, Penbay to reach the grand finale in November on the famous Shanghai track.

Racing in Asia is a very important step in making the Lamborghini make even more known, at this moment sales in that market have been growing ever since, bringing the racing experience closer to possible customers will only fortify the sale potential of the Raging Bull in Asia.

This first racing series was held over several stints, with the obligatory training sessions that lead up to twin racing stints … both won by a Chinese team driving car number 37 with Liu and Rizzo taking subsequent position behind the steering wheel.

Similar to the setup in Europe, the Asian Super Trofeo Series will be held next to other important racing event, the Sepang race was accompanied by the Malaysian Super Series, while in Japan the Formula Nippon will race at the same weekend, in Zhuhai the Series gets partnered with the Audi Pandelta Race while the big final will be a serious experience for visitors. On the Shanghai track the Super Trofeo race cars will be joined by the Audi R8 LMS Cup, the VW Scirocco Cup Asia and the Porsche Cup Asia … so a lot of race prepared cars competing in one important weekend.

Taking into the account the Lamborghini Super Trofeo race car being a lightweight version of the already impressive Gallardo LP560-4 this bespoke ‘gentleman racer’ comes complete with a reworked chassis and a power output of 419 kW from its V10 engine. The race car features Lamborghini’s permanent four-wheel drive and comes equipped with leading safety features, including an FIA FT-3 fuel cell, a full roll cage, a new Brembo Racing brake system and compatibility with HANS safety devices.

Typical of Lamborghini, the Super Trofeo’s bodyshell is not only extremely light but also exceptionally safe. Boasting tremendous torsional stiffness, the Super Trofeo maintains outstanding handling. Carbon-fibre composite features heavily in the bodyshell’s construction, forming the front skirt, splitter, rear bonnet, front compartment cover, side skirts, diffuser, rear skirt and large rear wing. The rear wing can also be repositioned to suit the requirements of different race tracks and environments, while all the race car’s windscreens and windows are made from Makrolon lightweight hi-tech polycarbonate.

Complementing its carbon fiber black Alcantara panels, the Super Trofeo comes equipped with one low-mounted racing bucket seat, produced in light and stiff Kevlar carbon-fibre composite, providing perfect ergonomic support to the driver, who is then secured into position by a six-point racing harness.

The first derivative of the already legendary Lamborghini Murciélago that actually entered production was the Murciélago R-GT, a race car based on the standard super car, that was introduced during the 2003 edition of the world famous IAA Frankfurt Motor Show.

Since the introduction of the Murciélago in September 2001, there has been an increasing demand for a high performance model based on the Lamborghini flagship, therefore Audi AG, current owner of Automobili Lamborghini SpA, decided the time was right to built such an extreme car.

Developed by Automobili Lamborghini SpA, with the help of Audi Sports Division and well known German based Reiter Engineering, the Murciélago R-GT will be built to FIA and ALMS specifications.

This means the engine will still be the massive V12 unit, but now equipped with air restrictions, actual power output hasn’t been published yet, but it will be very competitive compared with the cars the Murciélago R-GT will encounter on circuits around the world.

Because of FIA regulations, the VT four wheel drive has been replaced with ‘Rear Wheel Drive’ only and a six speed sequential gearbox will be mounted, total weight for this high-specs Lamborghini will be in the 1100 Kg FIA class specification.

First rumours mentioned only three cars would be built, and no customer cars would be available, but the press conference on September 9. in Frankfurt told otherwise customer cars would be available during 2004 for a base price below 500,000 Euro, note that the Murciélago R-GT is unfortunately not street-legal.

When you buy the Murciélago R-GT you will also receive support from Lamborghini’s own ‘Customer Sports Programme’, a division of Automobili Lamborghini SpA which not only sells these race cars but is also present on and near the track for assistance if needed.

Once the IAA Frankfurt closes the doors, the Murciélago R-GT will be shipped to Reiter Engineering who will perform extensive tests on the car to further develop it and even increase the already massive potential of this new model in the American Le Mans Series and the European FIA GT races.

Reiter Engineering will enter the car for the Estoril race (October 5, 2003) and the Monza race (October 29, 2003), on both occasions the car will be driven by Oliver Gavin and Dutch race driver Peter Kox. The latter was already a driver on the Diablo GTR that was entered last year in the FIA GT races.

Some sources also state that Vici Racing, owned by Ron Meixner, will run one of the Murciélago R-GT cars in the 1000 Km of Le Mans to work on tire development for this extreme Lamborghini.

Finally Lamborghini’s Raging bull will be seen on the race track around the world, ‘a perfect opportunity to show the world the advantages of the Murciélago both in competition and in performance’ according to Dr Werner Mischke, Chairman and president of Automobili Lamborghini SpA.

The American Le Mans Series will show the magnificent Lamborghini Murciélago R-GT in the United States, still one of the largest markets for Automobili Lamborghini SpA, while the European FIA GT series will also see the return of Maserati during the 2004 season, so the Lamborghini will be up against two of the most important competitors, Ferrari and Maserati.
