This high-octane test was undertaken by the adept team at sport auto, who shared an intriguing revelation. The Urus Performante didn’t just eclipse the Aston Martin; it also outperformed the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 despite being substantially heavier. The Urus Performante is an excellent example of brilliant engineering. It shows that power, weight, and control can be combined perfectly to create a vehicle that performs very well and is also exciting to drive. Interestingly, the Urus Performante shares its mechanical DNA with the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. Indeed build on the same Volkswagen Group MLB Evo also shared with the Audi Q8, Bentley Bentayga, and VW Touareg. However, this familial resemblance doesn’t extend to the lap times.

Fastest Car Around the Hockenheim Circuit?

For speed aficionados, it’s worth mentioning that the fastest vehicle to complete the Hockenheim circuit is the McLaren Senna, which accomplished the feat in a staggering 1 minute and 49 seconds, followed closely by the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with a time of 1:43.3. That is 10+ seconds faster than the SUVs.

Lamborghini Urus Performante: The Anatomy of Speed

The Lamborghini Urus Performante is indeed a marvel. Despite sharing the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 drivetrain with the original Urus, the Performante variant is tuned to produce a staggering 666 horsepower, a gain of almost 16 more horses. Not only does it pack more power, but it also sheds almost 47 kilograms (104 pounds), enhancing its agility and performance. Modified Jalpa’s specs

This transformed Jalpa roared onto the Australian drag strip, defying its status as a relic of the past. The owner of this unique Jalpa dedicated over ten years to redefining the machine for drag duty. Upgrades included replacing the modest 255-horsepower 3.5-liter V8 engine and the five-speed manual transmission with a twin-turbo Chevy LS V8 and a heavily modified Camry transmission, complemented by internals from a GM Turbo 400 gearbox to handle the newfound power and distribute it, smoothy, to its wheels. The pair of Ford XR6 Garrett turbochargers deliver a staggering 690 horsepower to the rear tires on moderate boost. But the madness began when the boost is fully cranked up.

Wheelies

The Lamborghini performed impressive wheelies off the line (watch the 1:05 mark of the clip). While the owner cautiously approached the initial runs, in its best run, the Jalpa completed the quarter-mile in a lightning-fast 8.992 seconds at a top speed of 157 mph (watch the 3:13 mark of the clip to watch its best run).

While this Jalpa may not match the astronomical speeds of its more modern descendants, this achievement is remarkable for a car that is almost 40 years old now

From modest origin to chassis donor

Despite positioning itself as a manageable everyday supercar and an economical alternative to the more powerful and expensive Countach, the Jalpa had a limited production run, with just 410 units sold before discontinuation. After its discontinuation, the maintenance of Jalpa models became increasingly expensive over the years for the owners due to the scarcity of parts and skilled mechanics.

Engine

Nik, an Australian owner of a Lamborghini Jalpa P350, decided to enhance the car’s performance boldly. He replaced the stock V8 engine with a more readily available GM 5.7 Liter LS1 engine, instantly boosting the power from 255hp to around 500hp. The conversion involved significant modifications, including custom machining, adapting the transaxle from an MR2 Turbo, and installing a modified automatic transmission from a Toyota Camry which could handle all that additional power.

Chassis

Nik also embarked on a comprehensive restoration of the Jalpa, addressing rust issues and making aesthetic changes such as removing the pop-up headlights, adding a custom exhaust, and integrating reverse lights from a 1966 Ford Mustang. The interior, too, underwent a transformation with black leather and gray stitching.

Braking

Nik improved the braking performance by replacing the original brake system with components from an MR2, which included a brake booster/master and upgraded brake pads.

Results

These modifications led to impressive achievements, as the car achieved a quarter-mile time of 10.65 seconds at approximately 130 mph back in 2014. Furthermore, in his recent run, he surpassed his previous record by covering the same distance in just 8.992 seconds.

Before its current form, Nick actually started upgrading the car with an LS1 engine and obtained a respectable 500hp. But he was not happy and slapped a  Magnuson MP112 Supercharger kit to its LS1, further elevating the power output to 600hp and we have a video of what the car looked like above.

Before pursuing the ultimate top speed, the audacious team behind this automotive marvel conducted a series of acceleration tests to gauge the tuned SUV’s prowess compared to its unmodified counterpart.

Astonishingly, the Urus achieved a blistering 0-62 mph in a mere 3.15 seconds, carving through the air half a second faster than its modified sibling. Further pushing the limits, it effortlessly sprinted to 155 mph from a standstill in a breathtaking 17.18 seconds and demolished the quarter-mile in a jaw-dropping 10.85 seconds.

Autobahn in Corsa Mode: 203MPH

With Corsa (race) mode engaged, the brave driver unleashes the full potential of the Urus on an unrestricted section of the autobahn, devoid of any speed limits, aiming to uncover the true pinnacle of the SUV’s velocity.

The Tecnica boasts both a weight advantage and increased power compared to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. It is nearly 228 pounds lighter and generates an additional 112 horsepower. The Porsche only finishes 1 second after the Lamborghini, which is very commendable considering its power and weight handicap. The 911 showed once more that rear-engine cars have a pretty solid advantage when it comes to transferring power to the ground from a standstill.

A single race doesn’t define the winner definitively, and track conditions, driver skill, and luck also play a significant part, but it would take a very unlucky Lambo driver to allow the Porsche to win, at least in a straight line.

The Huracan Tecnica: A 630 HP V10 Beast

The Huracan Tecnica uses a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine, pouring out 630 horsepower (It makes 112 horses more than its drag race rival here in this video) and 417 lb-ft of torque. Even with this explosive power, the Tecnica maintains a lean, dry weight of 3,040 lbs (which actually is one decisive which helped it win over its rival in this drag race).

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS… Only 530HP…

Its rival, the 911 GT3 RS, harbors a 4.0-liter flat-six engine under the hood, delivering 518 horsepower and 342 lb-ft of torque. Clocking a 0-60 mph in a mere 3 seconds, it also boasts a commendable top speed of 184 mph. Through extensive use of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), Porsche has engineered the GT3 RS to just 3,268 pounds (almost 228 pounds heavier than its rival in the drag race).

The race unfolds

From the start, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS burst into action, its seven-speed PDK gearbox putting its full power to good use. The Huracan Tecnica, though initially trailing, didn’t linger in the Porsche’s rearview mirror for long. Once the V10 came into its own, the Lamborghini surged ahead, sweeping past the Porsche with significant tarmac to spare.

The driver’s response plays a critical role in successfully launching a car. Despite its lighter weight and greater power, the Tecnica couldn’t outpace the heavier Porsche 911 GT3 RS at the outset. The vehicle flaunted its power, sprinting close to 186 mph (300 kph) on the video, hinting at a reservoir of potency yet to be fully unleashed. But what truly set hearts racing was the distinctive, thunderous V10 roar – a sound that’s increasingly rare in today’s electric-assist era.

Why The Top Speed Run Failed

Despite the Lamborghini Gallardo Performante’s impressive ability to reach top speeds of 201 mph, the driver couldn’t find an unrestricted stretch of the Autobahn to test its capabilities fully. Contrary to common belief, the entire Autobahn isn’t devoid of speed limits – it’s only specific sections that allow drivers to go as fast as they want. Despite the driver’s best efforts to locate an unrestricted section, he was unable to do so and, consequently, only achieved a top speed of 186 mph.

The 2011 Gallardo Performante Specs

Equipped with a 5.2-liter V10 engine, the Gallardo Performante stands out as the most potent stock Gallardo model (surpassing the standard Gallardo by almost 10 horses). It can churn out a peak output of 562 horses at 8,000 rpm and 398 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 rpm. The power output surpasses the 2011 Ferrari Italia’s 562 horsepower from its 4.5L V8. Despite having less power, the 458 Italia matches the Performante with 398 lb-ft torque and outperforms it slightly in top speed, clocking in at 202 mph compared to the Performante’s 201 mph.

While both are exotic Italian cars with exceptional performance, the key difference lies in their drivetrains. The Performante’s 4WD offers more grip and stability, while the Italia’s RWD promises pure, engaging driving dynamics.

That said, the Gallardo Performante’s engine, paired with a 6-speed E-gear automated manual transmission, sends all that power to all four wheels at the same time. According to Lamborghini, this power translates to a fast 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds, with a top speed that should reach around 201 mph (324 kph).

With Lamborghini announcing the end of the Huracan’s production run, the future belongs to hybridized twin-turbo V8s. But one thing is for sure – the sheer thrill and acoustic symphony of the mighty Lamborghini Gallardo Performante will always be remembered as a very important car.
