Finally, the long-awaited successor to the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 introduced in March 2011 has been unveiled, simply called the Aventador S Coupé this new model brings a host of updates to the V12 flagship from Sant’Agata.
At first glance, you will immediately notice the new design of the front and rear sections on the Aventador S, but the sides have also been modified … while keeping the profile look unmistakenly an Aventador, the rear wheel arches remind us of the legendary Countach now.
The front bumper houses two vertical intakes that create an improved aerodynamic flow around the front wheel onto the large, side air intake. Note the color coded ‘fangs’ hanging from the top while the lower fin raises in the middle of the bumper … making the Aventador S look very intimidating from the front.
At the rear, a different lower diffuser directs air flow better by using vertical fins, a centrally mounted, triangular exhaust tip and black rear fascia between the taillights complete the new look. The rear wing raises in three different angles depending on speed and drive mode.
The Lamborghini Aventador S is the first production model from Sant’Agata to feature four-wheel steering, up front combined with LDS (Lamborghini Dynamic Steering) while at the rear it is called LRS (Lamborghini Rear Steering). At low speed, this system virtually reduces the wheelbase while at higher speed the wheelbase appears longer for added stability.
The new Aventador S comes with the Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Attiva (LDVA) control unit. LDVA is the new brain of the car, receiving real-time data on body motion via input from sensors throughout the car, instantly defining the optimum setting of the active systems in order to guarantee the best vehicle dynamics in each and every condition.
We already knew the Anima switch on the steering wheel of the Huracan, now the Aventador S comes with Strada, Sport and Corsa too … but adds EGO to this list, a setting that allows the driver the combine his personal settings taken from Strada, Sport and Corsa and create his own criteria for traction, steering and suspension settings.
In the Aventador S the famous V12 engine outputs 740hp now, up 40hp from the original LP700-4 unit, max rpm is raised to 8,500 and both VT and VIS have been reprogrammed to achieve this increase without increasing displacement.
Carbon Ceramic disk brakes are now standard while the Pirelli P Zero tires are modified to cope with the rear wheel steering system on the new Aventador S … braking from a speed of 100km/h takes only 31 meters.
Inside the number of options and personalisation is nearly limitless by going through the Ad Personam program, AppleCarPlay is standard while the Lamborghini telemetry system is an option, do note that the LCD display in front of the driver has been restyled.
This is more than just a facelift of the by now nearly six-year-old Aventador LP700-4 design, the modifications on the outside have created a very aggressive, but stylish mix between the LP700-4 and the limited edition LP750-4 Superveloce model … keeping in mind Lamborghini has dropped the LP designation on their models I guess the next step will be an Aventador S Roadster that will take this evolution into the convertible world.
In the teaser released earlier Lamborghini speaks about the ‘ultimate evolution’ of the Aventador, but somehow I think we’ll be seeing more limited edition V12 models based on this Aventador S … how about an Aventador GT for instance, most likely a real replacement for the Aventador will be presented in four years or so, after a decade of Aventador I think 2021 will bring us the next step in the Lamborghini flagship history … probably with even more power by using hybrid systems …
