Sant’Agata Bolognese/Pebble Beach USA, 13 August 2021 – Automobili Lamborghini unveils the Countach LPI 800-4: a futuristic limited edition paying homage to the Countach’s iconic status as a revolutionary design and technology rule-breaker and recreated for the 21st century.

Its puristic lines are immediately recognizable from the Countach legacy: the patriarch of modern super sports cars and Lamborghini design. With its aspirated V12 engine combined with Lamborghini’s hybrid supercapacitor technology, the Countach LPI 800-4 retains the inimitable V12 experience and sound from its Longitudinale Posteriore (LP) mounted powerplant combined with the hybrid (I) technology developed for the Sián. Delivering 814 cv as maximum combined power (rounded at 800 in the name) from its aspirated powerplant (780 cv) and electric motor (34 cv) to its permanent four-wheel drive transmission, the LPI 800-4 produces peak Lamborghini performance of 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 2.8 seconds, a 0-200 km/h in 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 355 km/h.

Countach – the patriarch of modern super sports car design

The Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 is instantly recognizable as the elevated descendant of Countach generations: testament to the lasting impact of the original Countach design that became the poster car of the 1980s and a symbol of automotive and lifestyle ultra-cool. The Countach moniker – a fitting expression of surprise and wonder in Piedmontese dialect and pronounced ‘Coon-tach’ – is one of very few Lamborghini model names not connected to bulls.

“The first Countach has been present in our Centro Stile as a model for some years now”, explains Mitja Borkert, Head of Centro Stile. „Whenever I look at it, it gives me goose bumps and it serves as the perfect reminder for me and the entire design team to design every future Lamborghini in a visionary and futuristic way. This is an unnegotiable part of our DNA, the essence if you so will. The first Countach shaped the Lamborghini design DNA like no other car; the new Countach translates that unconventional and edgy character into the future.”

The Countach’s distinctive silhouette with the essential line running from front to rear, sharp angles and lines and idiosyncratic wedge shape, innovated modern super sports design as well as future Lamborghini models. The Countach LPI 800-4 develops the characteristic lines of the Countach’s five models over nearly 20 years, concentrated into the purest realization of iconic automotive design.

The final outline is pure and uncluttered, with references to the first LP 500 and LP 400 production version. Giving the LPI 800-4 a distinctive Countach face, inspiration was taken from the Quattrovalvole edition in the assertive lines of the front bonnet with long, low rectangular grille and headlights, as well as in the wheel arches with their hexagonal theme. The sharp inclination of the greenhouse adopts the straight lines redolent of the original Countach, adjoining the powerful, clean front-to-rear line. There is no fixed rear wing outside the pure lines, and the airscoops are integrated fluidly in the strong shoulders of the car, embellished with the distinctive Countach slatted ‘gills’. The iconic and aerodynamically powerful NACA air intakes cut into the side and doors of the Countach LPI 800-4 while the distinctive Periscopio lines running through the roof to the rear of the car, particularly distinctive if viewed from above, appear to float towards the rear of the car.

The rear of the Countach LPI 800-4 is immediately recognizable from its distinctive inverted wedge shape, with the rear bumper featuring a lower, sleeker line, and the ‘hexagonita’ design shaping the three-unit rear light clusters. The LPI 800-4 sports the four-strong exhaust tail pipes of the Countach family, connected within the carbon fiber rear diffuser. Access for driver and passenger is of course via the infamous scissor doors, first introduced on the Countach and that have become a Lamborghini V12 signature.

Performance engineering for a new era

The V12 engine of the Countach is as legendary as the design. Mounted longways at the rear together with its forward-cabin layout, the original Countach featured side-mounted radiators from Formula One; forward-facing gearbox and tubular spaceframe technology. It was as revolutionary in its approach to sports car engineering as in its astonishing looks, with its engine position chosen for weight distribution and balance and of course, the aspirated twelve cylinders delivering the most emotive top performance. The Countach developed the best available technologies to produce an extraordinary car: this visionary philosophy is reflected in the Countach LPI 800-4, taking the pinnacle of current Lamborghini technologies and engineering to produce the performance expected from a Countach in 2021.

“The engineering team that developed the original Countach advanced Lamborghini’s pioneering technical approach, delivering unexpected innovations and the best performance available in a production car,” says Lamborghini Chief Technology Officer Maurizio Reggiani. “That spirit inherently drives Lamborghini R&D, resulting in the pioneering hybrid technology in the LPI 800-4, and the emotive driving experience and top-line performance expected from a flagship V12 Lamborghini.”

The Lamborghini V12 6.5 liter engine, outputting 780 cv, is combined with a 48 volt e-motor mounted directly on the gearbox providing a further 34 cv for immediate response and increased performance: it is the innovative and unique architecture Lamborghini developed for Sián, that is the only mild-hybrid technology to create a direct connection between electric motor and wheels, preserving the pure V12 behavior. The e-motor is powered by a supercapacitor providing three times more power compared to a lithium-ion battery of the same weight.

The monocoque chassis and all the body panels are in carbon fiber, provide the optimum lightweight solution as well as exceptional torsional stiffness: the Countach LPI 800-4 has a dry weight of 1595 kg for a dry weight to power ratio of 1,95 kg/cv. Visible exterior carbon fiber features are available in the front splitter, around the front window and wing mirrors, engine bonnet cover air intakes and rocker panel and it is always present in specific interior details. Moveable air vents produced by the state-of-the-art 3D printing technology, and a photocromatic roof – changing from solid to transparent at the push of a button – act as a reminder that this car, despite its historic inspiration, is a future automotive screensaver for the 21st century.

World debut at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, USA

The Countach LPI 800-4 is unveiled today at The Quail, USA in a dedicated color Bianco Siderale, containing a hint of pearlescent blue and reminiscent of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s own Countach LP 400 S, complete with red and black leather heritage interior. The interior also takes design cues from the original Countach within the context of a modern car. The classic and luxurious leather features geometric stitching on the specially designed comfort seats and dashboard, sporting a square motif referencing the bold style and optimism of 1970s design and technology.
The Countach LPI 800-4 20” (front) and 21” (rear) wheels are created in the ‘telephone’ style of the 1980s, fitted with carbon ceramic brake discs, and Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres.

Owners of the exclusive limited edition Countach LPI 800-4 can choose from a range of heritage exterior paint options, mostly in solid colours, such as the iconic Impact White, Giallo Countach and Verde Medio. Otherwise, the contemporary palette offers modern paintings, mostly metallic colors, such as Viola Pasifae or Blu Uranus.

An 8,4” HDMI center touchscreen unique to the LPI 800-4 manages car controls including Connectivity and Apple CarPlay. It also includes a unique button entitled ‘Stile’ (Design): pressed, it explains the Countach design philosophy to its privileged audience.
Produced in a run of 112 units, the number denotes the ‘LP 112’ internal project name used during the original Lamborghini Countach’s development. The Countach LPI 800-4 will be delivered from first quarter 2022 to owners worldwide, privileged to drive a piece of automotive history reimagined for the future.

The Lamborghini Aventador LP780-4 Ultimae is the final swansong for this type of engine from Sant’Agata, with a production run limited to 350 Coupe and 250 Roadster, this specific model will become an instant collector’s item, the comfort, and handling from the Aventador S combined with SVJ styling but without the ALA system, the Ultimae is the best of both worlds, and during the introduction by Stephan Winkelmann, CEO and director of Automobili Lamborghini SpA, he made it abundantly clear this would be the last V12 for Lamborghini in a combustion engine in this form … the last of an era, the Ultimate.

In a few weeks, we’ll be able to admire another Aventador based limited edition car, but that will be the Countach Homage model and will come with the Supercapacitor as seen on the Sian before, so not a real NA V12, rumors talk about a production run of 112 units to commemorate the LP112 designation the famous Countach received 50 years ago and a price tag of $3,000,000, the unveiling will be held during Car Week in Monterey, California, and I can’t wait to see what Lamborghini comes up with to celebrate their most innovative design that introduced the term ‘Lamborghini doors’ in automotive history.

The successor to the 2011 Lamborghini Aventador should be ready as a 2023 model, so there is still some time before the move into hybridization will occur in Sant’Agata, still, they are working hard on a new V12 engine, the current L539 unit will not survive into the future flagship supercar from Lamborghini, the 2023 model will get a different V12 engine that is currently under development, with additional electric motors integrated from the design stage on to create Lamborghini’s first hybrid V12 production model, but it will not be the first hybrid customers can buy from Sant’Agata.

That honor will go to the Urus, the Super SUV that’s setting sales records year on year, with over 15,000 units over three years of production, it’s safe to say the Urus brings in some serious turnover for Lamborghini, and we’ve been expecting this model as a hybrid right from the start, and it’s finally happening in 2022 it seems, next year we’ll get the mid-life facelift that’s been captured in spy-shots already, and electric motors and batteries will make their introduction into the Lamborghini line-up, just as it has done on the MLB Evo platform for models from Audi, Bentley, and Porsche, who all have their PHEV models for a while now.

Will the Urus Ibrido keep the twin-turbo V8 engine and add more horsepower with the electric motors, or will they switch to a smaller, weight reducing V6 engine to counteract the additional weight of the electric motors and the batteries … that’s what Bentley did with the Bentayga Hybrid, a 3-Liter V6 single turbo with 335 hp that adds 126 hp from an electric motor for a combined power output of just 443 hp, while the Bentayga V8 S comes with 542 hp … the Lamborghini Urus has 641 hp, so will the Urus Ibrido come with less? I sure hope not.

So, we’ll see the first hybrid Lamborghini next year on the Urus, then in 2023 the next step in electrification will come around in the form of the new flagship, the Aventador successor that will be Lamborghini’s first V12 hybrid, and Stephan Winkelmann already confirmed they will not be going down the route of a Supercapacitor for the flagship production model, the new V12 will come with state-of-the-art batteries instead, the Supercapacitor solution just wouldn’t be appropriate for a production car Winkelmann mentioned, will this new V12 be a 6.5-liter unit like the Aventador one … that’s not mentioned anywhere, possibly it will come with a smaller displacement to safe weight and size, every kg counts on a hybrid because the batteries are still very heavy.

I did read somewhere that one of the reasons Lamborghini is redeveloping the V12 engine for the hybrid successor is the fact they’ve pushed the L539 unit just about to its limits when it comes to power output, it seems the 780 hp on the Aventador Ultimae is as far as they are willing to go with this engine for a production model, so would that insinuate the new V12 engine will come with more power right from the start? Will we be seeing a Lamborghini in 2023 with more than 1,000 hp combined power output … we really should, shouldn’t we?

Only one year after the new V12 hybrid flagship takes over from the Aventador, the Huracán is up for replacement in 2024, and it will also be a hybrid right from the start, but chances are we won’t be seeing a return of the V10 engine at that time, the Huracán successor will more likely receive a smaller displacement V8 turbocharged engine, or even a V6 unit with turbos and electric motors, power output for the Huracán successor will be close to 700 hp if not more, as right now Lamborghini is probably deliberately keeping the power output of the ‘Baby’ below the flagship model to make a clear distinction between the two … if the new V12 hybrid goes over the magical 1,000 hp there is no reason why the Huracán replacement shouldn’t follow and offer up to 900 hp in her hybrid form.

Automobili Lamborghini SpA is going through some serious evolution over the next years, the Urus Ibrido in 2022, the Aventador successor as a V12 hybrid by 2023, in 2024 the Huracán gets replaced with a hybrid model too, and Lamborghini is still planning their all-electric fourth model after 2025, which will be a GT style car. Lamborghini will have two ‘lines’ when Stephan Winkelmann is asked about this, on one side there will be two supercars à la Huracán and Aventador, while on the other side there are the more practical models like the Urus and the new GT, he also mentioned the styling and design between these two ‘lines’ will be considerably different to cater to different market segments.

But wait, didn’t we title this article ‘The Lamborghini NA V12 will remain’? So what’s up with that, as it seems we’ll be seeing every Lamborghini model become a hybrid in two years or so? Well, there’s a catch, Automobili Lamborghini SpA will not be able to make NA V12 road cars anymore to comply with ever-stricter regulations worldwide, but those rules don’t apply to ‘track only’ cars … and that’s where the V12 engine will live on for several more years, without turbochargers or electric motors, just a pure, internal combustion, fuel-burning V12 that will emit her thundering soundtrack through an open exhaust … in line with the Essenza SCV12, so Stephan Winkelmann didn’t officially confirm this, but there are probably some more V12 powered track day only cars from Sant’Agata in the pipeline.

And what about the one-off models like the SC18 Alston and the more recent SC20 … will bespoke cars like that be able to retain the NA V12 engine and forfeit any hybrid setup in the future? My guess is this will be possible for several more years into the future, but at one point legislation will make new petrol-powered only cars illegal, but until then Lamborghini should be able to build hybrid cars in their entire lineup and create a few bespoke builds now and then … only time will tell, but the future of Lamborghini and any other supercar maker out there is hybridization and electrification … we can’t deny that.

Lamborghini calls it “Direzione Cor Tauri”, in plain English this consist of the plans to ‘decarbonize’ future Lamborghini models, the plan is to cut down CO² emissions by 50% on all Lamborghini cars by 2025, achieving such a reduction won’t come easy, and it will mean we will have to say goodbye to the glorious V12 and V10 naturally aspirated engines … but didn’t we already knew about this?

Such an announcement has been in the making for years now, legislation is changing on a global scale, and high-power gas-guzzling V12 engines are getting out of fashion in a hurry with the powers that rule, so we should all get a car that goes “woosh” and runs on batteries … but that’s not why we love Lamborghinis so much, we actually love the grunt from those massive exhaust pipes at the rear, coming from a large displacement V12 engine, because, let’s face it, the late Ferruccio Lamborghini got it right, a ‘real’ car comes with a V12.

But let’s not panic too soon, the entire ‘road to electrification’ will go through three phases according to Stephan Winkelmann, step one will make sure the naturally aspirated engines we’ve known since 1963 will go out in style, and will remain the highlight for the flagship from Sant’Agata until 2022, the first actual hybrid production model will be introduced in 2023 only, not any time sooner.

If you think about that statement, some other things are made obvious … the Aventador will stay in production, with its massive V12 engine, until the end of 2022, Winkelmann again confirms we’ll be seeing two new V12 cars later this year, which, even if they are limited edition models, will have to be built well into 2022 to satisfy demand, when they introduce the successor, which as we all know, will be a hybrid, it will be 2023, so most likely the final Aventador model, whatever it may be called, will leave the Sant’Agata assembly line by the Summer of 2022, after which they convert the line to build the first pre-production versions for the successor.

With the Lamborghini Huracán EVO and EVO RWD being introduced recently, it is highly unlikely this model will be replaced in 2023 with the first hybrid production series model Stephan Winkelmann talks about, but as he mentions: ‘the entire range will be electrified by the end of 2024’, the Huracán will be replaced by a successor only one year after the Aventador, in early 2024 I guess, which will mean the end of the naturally aspirated V10 engine.

So what’s up with the Urus then? We’ve already seen the test-mule for the facelift version, which is bound to be unveiled any time soon, but will it also come with a new, Urus Ibrido version? Ever since the Lamborghini Urus was introduced, the rumor was that this would be the first production Lamborghini to get help from electric motors … so is that the car Winkelmann refers to for the 2023 launch? I highly doubt that to be honest, the car is still selling extremely well, so perhaps a higher power output version of the Urus will be released first with a facelift, but it is clear the Aventador is getting old, and really needs a replacement as soon as possible, so my money is on the Aventador replacement for 2023.

So the second step is the complete move to hybrid by the end of 2024, the intention is to have the entire range of Lamborghini cars available in hybrid form in a little over three years, to achieve this feat a massive investment of 1,5 billion Euro over this period is foreseen, so Lamborghini engineers can develop ways to reduce weight as much as possible to counteract the addition of electric motors and batteries to the cars, but still offer mindblowing performance and handing, something that is just part of the Lamborghini DNA for decades, and that is their first priority to retain when creating a hybrid Lamborghini.

This will mean the end of the V12 and V10 naturally aspirated engines for Lamborghini, something that can’t be avoided with the evolution of laws around the world, but if there’s one bright star at the skies, for now, the V12 is destined to remain for that 2023 hybrid series production car, it will get help from electric motors, but there will still be a V12 engine fitted … if it will be the same 6.5-Liter version we know from the Aventador today isn’t so sure, and honestly, I think it’s highly unlikely. My guess is we’ll be seeing a smaller displacement V12 engine with one or more electric motors to get a power output close to, or even over the 1,000 hp mark, the flagship model from Sant’Agata will keep its V12 engine.

For the Huracán replacement things might be a lot different, the chances of the V10 engine remaining are slim to non-existent we’ve been told, once the successor turns to hybrid form, the chances of fitting a smaller V8 or even a V6 engine are very high, this would be an easy way to reduced weight so the added electric motors and batteries don’t add too much overall weight in the end, and with power outputs from other makes using a V8 with a hybrid add-on reaching some very impressive numbers, it wouldn’t be unfeasible to have an Huracán replacement hybrid with 700 or more horsepower, even with a V6 engine.

And now comes the kicker … phase three. In 2025 Automobili Lamborghini SpA plans to add a fourth model to the line-up, then we’ll have seen both the Aventador and the Huracán being replaced by a new model with hybrid power, the Urus will be well into her facelift and offered as a hybrid too … so time to add a GT to the model list, and it will be the first all-electric Lamborghini ever!

Yes, you’ve got it right, by the second half of this decade we’ll have an electric Lamborghini, and no, it won’t be a golf cart, it will be a new, additional model, most likely a Grand Tourer, either two or four doors, but with at least a 2+2 seating configuration, most likely even a four-seater. And I would be really surprised if Lamborghini wouldn’t be using an evolution of the chassis from the Porsche Taycan or Audi e-tron GT we know today … I sure wouldn’t mind seeing an evolution of the beautiful Estoque concept that was destined for production over a decade ago, but got surpassed by the Urus.

Whatever we all were expecting from Lamborghini for the future, I’m sure it has to be a move to hybridization was inevitable, there is no way around that, but I’m also confident we’ll be seeing some amazing new cars emerge from Sant’Agata that will still come with all the legacy and DNA seen in most Lamborghini built since 1963, it’s time for the future, it’s time for a Lamborghini hypercar to take the throne from the Aventador.

Fast forward 11 years and we have the Lamborghini Urus being sold in high numbers, over 6,000 have been built already, and with that success in mind Lamborghini is thinking about the future, and a possible fourth model in the line up … and that could be either a 2+2 or a four-door model … so perhaps we’ll finally be seeing the return of the Estoque in a few years … another addition to the Raging Bull line will be at least 5 or 6 years in the future, by 2025.

Today we have the Lamborghini Huracan, the Aventador and the Urus being built in Sant’Agata, but by 2025 both the Huracan and the Aventador will have been replaced by a successor and most likely the Urus will have received an evolution … into hybrid power. Rumor has it the Huracan replacement will drop the V10 engine and will go V8 with hybrid power, while the flagship successor should keep the V12 engine, but also with added electric motors … and we all know the Urus is set to receive a hybrid addition any time soon.

This brings us to 2025 when Lamborghini could introduce a fourth model, either a 2+2 or a four-door sedan … but most likely this car will go full electric, taking the J1 platform to Italy. Today this J1 is used on the Porsche Taycan and the Audi E-Tron GT … both large four-door cars … which brings us back to the 2008 Estoque.

None other than Maurizio Reggiani, R&D director at Lamborghini, talked about this in an interview with Autocar … he mentioned they should start working on this new car by 2021 if they want to have it ready for production in 2025, and it would take the Estoque Concept and bring it into the next decade by combining her design with the current Urus styling … which would make perfect sense as most manufacturers that have both coupe, sedan and SUV in their range show a common house style over the entire range.

Being a Lamborghini, the 2025 Estoque would have some serious performance, a 0-60mph acceleration below 3 seconds for instance, and while going all-electric, a range of more than 350 miles (nearly 600 km) should be possible with the evolution of batteries and electric engines in the upcoming years.

When talking to CEO Stefano Domenicali, Autocar picked up that Lamborghini might go down the 2+2 route again with this 2025 model, so we might be seeing a two-door model instead, which would be a nice evolution from the original 400GT 2+2 from the Sixties and the Islero and Jarama models, so back to the roots created by Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1963.

It would indeed be great if Lamborghini would bring back the GT model to Sant’Agata, remember before the Gallardo shattered all records, the Lamborghini Espada was the best-selling model with over 1,200 units sold, so bringing back a true GT the way Ferruccio intended will be a great homage, and who knows, if they sell enough cars we might even be seeing another convertible model from Lamborghini like the extremely rare 350GTS of which only two were ever built.

At the 2019 IAA in Frankfurt Lamborghini unveiled a satin green Sián to the public and the owners that ordered the 63 units that will be built, and to make things even more interesting, Lamborghini plans on building 63 different Sián … not two will be alike as every owner is invited at the factory to create a one-off, bespoke car just for him … or her, and judging from the samples the Ad Personam department showed during the VAG VIP evening event we might be seeing some really wild looking Lamborghini Sián once they are delivered.

So only 63 units of this Sián coupe will be built, and all of them are already sold … but what about a Roadster version? Will Automobili Lamborghini SpA turn the Sián into a convertible as they did with the Veneno and Centenario before?

I for one really hope so, I love an open-top Lamborghini, and even if it doesn’t even come with any kind of roof (like the Aventador J, the Veneno Roadster and the Centenario Roadster) it still is the ultimate Raging Bull in my eyes … so I created a Sián Roadster myself, in a style I would like to see with a full windshield and just two roll-over bars behind the seats … a true Roadster in every sense of the word.

So only 63 units of this Sián coupe will be built, and all of them are already sold … but what about a Roadster version? Will Automobili Lamborghini SpA turn the Sián into a convertible as they did with the Veneno and Centenario before?

I for one really hope so, I love an open-top Lamborghini, and even if it doesn’t even come with any kind of roof (like the Aventador J, the Veneno Roadster and the Centenario Roadster) it still is the ultimate Raging Bull in my eyes … so I created a Sián Roadster myself, in a style I would like to see with a full windshield and just two roll-over bars behind the seats … a true Roadster in every sense of the word.

The LB48H will be the first V12 hybrid production car from Lamborghini, with only 63 units built at a rumored price of €2,200,000 before taxes, the car has been sold out since July 2018 already … the 63 owners will, however, be invited to a private unveiling of their car shortly after the Geneva Motor Show.

According to Lamborghini’s Chief Commercial Officer, Federico Foschini, the LB48H is the internal, technical name and the car will receive a fitting name by the time they unveil it, also note this is an important concept for the future, as we all know the LB48H will give us a glimpse at what the Aventador successor will look like.

It has already been confirmed the Aventador will be replaced by a hybrid model, adding electric motors to the V12 engine … in case of the LB48H we will see the 6.5 liter V12 getting help from two electric motors powering the front wheels, total power output has been rumored to be 838 hp (850PS) so the hybrid  system might add about 100ps to the V12 engine it seems.

We know the styling for the LB48H will be influenced by the Terzo Millennio concept shown in 2017 and will preview some queues for the Aventador successor, just like the Reventon did for the Aventador, Foschini also mentioned the successor would be using the hybrid powertrain to improve performance, they don’ t intend to offer long-range driving on electric power alone, but want to have more power without increasing the output from the V12 … fully electric driving range could be as low as 30km he mentioned.

Foschini also indicated the Aventador successor might be delayed until 2021 because sales are still going strong, the latest Aventador SVJ production of 900 units sold out in a mere four weeks, and we still have the Aventador SVJ Roadster to be unveiled … so a successor to the V12 flagship from Sant’Agata isn’t needed yet, but he also confirmed they are already working on it, the internal code is rumored to be LB635 …

One more item that came up during the interview … there will be a surprise from Lamborghini at the IAA in September, Foschini wouldn’t reveal any details but he might be referring to a Urus hybrid version that has been talked about for a while now too.

So what will populate the stand at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in two weeks then … most likely the public unveiling of the Lamborghini Huracan EVO and perhaps the premiere of the Huracan EVO Spyder … and what about the Aventador SVJ Roadster, we all know that is still to come too, and how many of this open-top V12 will they produce in the end?

Not much is known about this new ‘special’ from the house of the Raging Bull, but it is believed production will be limited to only 63 models, a throwback to the fact Automobili Lamborghini SpA was founded back in 1963 … and another rumor mentions it will be a hybrid, which would make it the first of its kind from Lamborghini.

Back in 2014, Lamborghini unveiled the Asterion LPI910-4 at the Paris Motor Show, a concept showing a V10 engine taken from the Huracan and coupled to three electric motors to create a total power output of no less than 910hp … but that car remained a prototype and was never put into production.

But there has been an Aventador Hybrid test mule a few years ago, the Tosca was hiding a V10 engine to power the rear wheels and a pair of electric motors to power the front wheels, inside the body of an Aventador LP700-4 … but the technology wasn’t ready for production at that time and the Tosca wasn’t developed further … until now that is.

Lamborghini created project LB48H, the internal code name for a very limited production model based on the current flagship, the V12 Aventador, but with additional hybrid motors to create the very first Lamborghini hybrid production model … if you could state 63 units as being a production model that is.

In late 2017 Lamborghini stunned the world with an all-electric concept called the Terzo Millennio, a very low, LeMans styled supercar that didn’t have any V12 engine, just electric motors on all four wheels … but that prototype was a static model, it wasn’t driveable … in the near future, we might be seeing a fully functional hybrid instead.

We might be seeing this new one-off model from Lamborghini as soon as 2018 already, possibly with an unveil at the Geneva Motor Show, just like the Veneno and Centenario before … both limited edition models based on the Aventador chassis … which is why we think the new LB48H will also be using the Aventador cockpit and chassis, so the wheelbase will be the same as the earlier V12 one-off models.

Styling is rumored to have taken a lot of design cues from the Terzo Millennio, which is why we’ve created a few renders on how this new model might look if you take the Aventador as a base and fit the Terzo Millennio styling onto that chassis … the result is rather aggressive looking by the way.

With a production that is possibly limited to 63 units and a price being whispered of $2,500,000 each this might become the next collectible Lamborghini instantly … for now only in coupe form, but just imagine a Roadster edition of the LB48H … we’ve certainly rendered an open-top version to dream about.

During a VIP event in Italy last month, prospective buyers were shown the LB48H already, but as usual, no photos have surfaced from that occasion, and there is talk about further private VIP showings of this new one-off in New York and Tokyo … but by the time we will be seeing the real car being unveiled I guess all 63 units will be sold already.

If the Centenario is anything to go by for this new LB48H model we might again be seeing a full carbon fiber body (as an option or as standard, who knows), but wouldn’t it be nice if Lamborghini would offer this car with ‘tinted carbon fiber’ … so a clear carbon fiber body, but finished in Rosso or Arancio … now that would really put this model at a level yet unseen in Sant’Agata.

The choice of a V6 might not fully line up with the usual Lamborghini V12 and V10 engines, but with a power output of 990hp in total it might not be such a bad idea, keep in mind a V6 takes up a lot less space than a large V10 or V12 unit.

Batteries are scattered around the Phenomeno concept to create a perfect weight distribution and still be accessible easily for maintenance while a solar panel has been incorporated into the roof section of the Lamborghini concept.

For the overall design of his Lamborghini Phenomeno LP990-4 Gorin looked at some of the more influential Bulls from the past and present, the design of the limited edition million dollar Reventon is clearly visible while the current Aventador style can be found around the Phenomeno too. But the classic Miura and famous Countach also came into the equation when designing the aggressive look of this hybrid concept while the Diablo played a role too.

Gorin even envisioned a more aggressive looking SV model, or Super Veloce … with additional aerodynamic items and even higher capacity batteries the lightweight SV couples high strength polymers with stunning looks.

Automobili Lamborghini unveils its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology demonstrator, the Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4, making its world debut at the 2014 Paris Mondial de l’Automobile. Clearly a Lamborghini, Asterion is a conceptual car housing a plug-in hybrid powertrain designed to Lamborghini objectives: The Asterion defines a solution to significantly reducing CO2 emissions through technologies available today, guaranteeing the unique Lamborghini driving feel with a smooth and reactive driveability and with superior power, including an exceptional pure electric range of 50 km.

Conceived and developed entirely in-house by Lamborghini, the Asterion LPI 910-4 takes the design and cutting-edge engineering expertise found in the current Lamborghini product range, adding innovative hybrid technology, creating thus a Lamborghini that is clearly different – with a new, unexpected and sensual design, in line with the technical characteristics of the car – but yet is still unmistakeably a Lamborghini.

The Rationale

Asterion is a technology demonstrator representing a Lamborghini model that could be realistically produced today, using technologies currently available and drawing on Lamborghini’s own expertise.
“Lamborghini is always looking ahead, investing in new technologies and setting new benchmarks, delivering the unexpected” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.

“Lamborghini continues to focus on weight reduction as a means to reducing CO2, for example through the investment in carbon fiber engineering, which also contributes to our quest for the best super sports car handling and performance. To significantly reduce emissions on a car in this moment however, plug-in electrification is the best option for us, because for Lamborghini such a car must still provide a truly emotional driving experience. In the Asterion this is guaranteed through a naturally aspirated engine that is combined with PHEV technology, which not only offers exceptionally low CO2 emissions of 98 g/km, but a practical pure electric driving range of 50 km.

The Plug-in Hybrid solution and Performance

For the Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4, a PHEV solution is the clear Lamborghini choice. The Asterion provides all-important urban driving under purely electric power, a significant range of 50 km for the car when powered only by battery energy, and the emotion and power of a naturally aspirated Lamborghini engine for a unique driving experience.

Fuel consumption is 4,12 l/100 km combined cycle (NEDC). The weight of the hybrid technology is 250 kg. The Asterion’s objective of significantly reducing C02 emissions, while maintaining an engaging and emotional Lamborghini cruising experience, is achieved with exceptional CO2 emissions of 98 g/km.

Based on a monocoque made entirely of carbon fibre, a V10 5.2 liter FSI engine is located longitudinally as a mid-engine, as in Lamborghini super sports cars. The extremely fast shifting 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is located behind the engine at the rear transaxle. The housing of the powerful lithium battery is placed longways in the central tunnel area, normally reserved for the transmission. This allows for better balance of the car and also protects the battery area in case of lateral crash impact.

The Asterion’s hybrid architecture is realized with an electric motor incorporating an integrated starter motor and generator (ISG) which is placed between the V10 engine and the double clutch gearbox, and two electric motors at the front axle fed by the ISG power with a torque vectoring function. This system allows the Asterion two different driving modes: in hybrid mode it is combining the V10 engine with the three electric motors guaranteeing a permanent four-wheel drive without being dependent on the battery’s state of charge. In pure electric drive mode only the two electric motors in the front are used.

The V10 5.2 l longitudinally-placed, naturally aspirated mid-engine provides a maximum power output of 449 kW (610 hp) with 560 Nm of maximum torque available. Combined with the three electric motors providing a further 220 kW (300 hp), total hybrid power is achievable to a maximum of 669 kW (910 hp). The combined action of the two propulsion systems ensures an exceptional dynamic impulse: acceleration of 0-100 km/h takes place in 3.0 seconds. With a top hybrid/combined speed of 320 km/h the Asterion LPI 910-4 also reaches up to 125 km/h under pure electric power. More importantly for city driving the Asterion has a pure electric range of 50 km, putting it top of the class for hybrid super sports cars.

The new Inspiration for Design

The Blue Elektra glittered colour of the Asterion as well as the new design language reflect the technological concept behind the car.

Designed by Lamborghini Centro Stile, the Asterion contains the unmistakeable Lamborghini DNA and heritage and yet is clearly different from the existing Lamborghini super sports car models. The Asterion touches new boundaries, with an innovative and unexpected design language which explores curves and sensuality, smooth transitions from panel to panel, and few sharp edges. The result is a pure, essential design.

The Asterion, like all Lamborghini cars, has clearly defined lines, separating flat planes from the side of the car and distinguishing between panels. Light and shadow accentuate the volumes of the car, highlighting the muscularity of Asterion yet giving the car a more slender elegance.

The front end of the car is produced as a single component, giving the Asterion a dynamic look, emphasised through the positioning of its four ‘eyes with eyebrows’: headlights are realized in materials including forged carbon and titanium.

The front air intakes are characterized by an active air cooling system which uses a double layered grid for the first time in a Lamborghini: one metal and one titanium grid are embedded into each other, one containing the Y leitmotiv and the other the hexagon theme, creating a tri dimensional effect and standing out against the body colour.

The powerful rear end stands out for its shape and remarkable rear lights, including a grid covering two radiators, and a clear separation between body colour and black parts. A transparent engine cover in the rear is an aesthetic detail linking to the hybrid technology beneath, comprised of three hexagonal glasses that turn according to the engine driving mode: pure electric, hybrid power or pure thermal engine power.

The Pirelli tyres are fitted to 20″ and 21″ rims in carbon components, and surrounded by welldefined mudguards embedded within the body of the car that contribute to the muscular road presence of the Asterion.

The Asterion’s doors are large, opening outwards and permit easy access to the car’s interior.

Creating an ergonomically spacious cabin for the car’s occupants with a comfortable seating position, the angle of the black A Pillars gives a more vertical windshield and a higher head clearance, while visually extending the front of the car, which includes a luggage compartment. Thus the interior of the Asterion guarantees an appropriate roominess for the passengers.

A lit tricolore flag on the door reminds of Asterion’s Italian heritage and a discreet Raging Bull shield is embedded in the side of the car.

The Interior Design

The clear, minimal and modern interior of the Asterion reflects the exterior design yet with a classic look and feel. Internally, the two seats are positioned higher than those in Lamborghini super sports cars, ensuring a car for comfortable every day cruising rather than extreme performance and handling.

Extensive Bianco Celaeno (ivory) and Marrone Attis (brown) leather immediately confirm the luxurious drive experience of the Asterion with an elegance from combining materials including aluminium and forged carbon fibre, as well as titanium that is also visible in the iconic three spoke steering wheel design drawn from the Miura. However, the Asterion’s steering wheel also includes three buttons from which the driver selects his engine driving mode: Zero – for zero emissions/full electric; I for ‘Ibrido’ (hybrid); and T for ‘Termico’ (thermal) power. Finally, a portable tablet allows the car’s occupants to manage climate control and other functions including GPS and in-car infotainment.

The Name

Asterion LPI 910-4 – LP stands for ‘longitudinale posteriore’, the position of the conventional engine, I stands for ‘ibrido’, 910 for the system power and 4 for the permanent 4WD system – is the new concept of a new kind of dream car designed by Lamborghini starting from an intuition: the key for anticipating the future lies in a transformation and hybridisation of Lamborghini’s own DNA.

With the Asterion, a hyper cruiser is born: a mix of elegance with the pure seduction offered by driving a Lamborghini, a car whose powerful engine meets the sustainability of hybrid technology, thanks also to its lightweight chassis in carbon fiber.

The Lamborghini Asterion is inspired by a legend: Asterion is the proper name of the mythical Minotaur, a hybrid figure and symbolic crossbreed telling a story of the powerful fusion between intellect and instinct, part man and part bull, creating an ever powerful archetype Thus, Lamborghini sticks to its tradition of giving its models a name taken from the world of bulls, but at the same time adding an innovative element, a hybrid DNA: the strength of a bull delivered by the naturally aspirated engine is combined with the human rationale delivered by the hybrid technology.

Do note the Lamborghini LPI910-4 Asterion Hybrid Coupe Concept is only a showcase of what kind of technology Automobili Lamborghini SpA could offer when it comes to alternative power sources, the Asterion is a third in a series of concept studies that started with the Estoque and the Urus neither of which are in production however the Urus should be built from 2017 on but a lot can still change in the years ahead.

Less of an exotic supercar, the Lamborghini Asterion focuses more on the GT customer, a high-end Hyper Grand Turismo car that offers thrilling performance while being seated inside the most luxurious surroundings in the case of this blue metallic prototype the interior is finished in a beautiful light tan leather combined with warm brown shades very nice indeed, but a far cry from a Huracan or Aventador cockpit.

Power comes from the V10 Huracan engine combined with three brushless electric motors adding another 300hp to the package, the batteries are located near the center of the Asterion for perfect weight distribution while recharging the car be done while driving or by plugging in this Bull.

The Lamborghini Asterion comes with three different modes the Termico ‘T’ mode which comes down to full thermal power, the Ibrido ‘I’ mode which is the usual Hybrid we all know and the ‘Z’ mode a Zero emission running mode when using only the electric motors the Asterion can travel 31 miles with a max speed of 78Mph note that in electric mode the acceleration from 0 to 100km/h takes a mere 3 seconds while a top speed of 199mph is possible on batteries!

The Hybrid power train adds ‘only’ 250kg to the carbon fiber chassis that gets covered with lightweight carbon fiber panels however a total weight for the Asterion Concept hasn’t been published yet.

If you take a closer look at the engine cover you will notice a three-panel glass design these panels actually change shape depending on which driving mode has been selected in each of the settings to maximize the cooling performance.

Is this the future for Lamborghini, creating high-power Hybrid cars in the more luxurious GT class instead of the supercars they offer today in the two-model production line? I really don’t know, but the Asterion does look different than anything else that has ever left the factory gates in Sant’Agata Filippo Perini once again created something totally innovative for the Raging Bull.

Now AutoBLOG came up with another interesting piece of information … apparently Lamborghini has recently registered two new names … Asterión and Encaste, and what’s even more interesting is the fact a stylish logo has been registered too, showing a script similar to the Huracán name but with a bolt of lightning in the ‘O’ of Asterión … does that mean Lamborghini is preparing a Hybrid model for Paris?

With competition from Maranello (Italy) and Surrey (UK) already having hypercars with both a fuel engine and battery powered unit to elevate power output beyond the usual it would make sense for Lamborghini to put something similar on the market next … that would mean ‘you can only double it’ refers to having two power plants in the new Bull.

The design of the teaser image hints at a GT or four door model, which could make sense as this kind of model would not interfere with the still strong sales of the V12 flagship the Aventador and the brand new V10 Huracán model … however if Automobili Lamborghini SpA would take on the hyper car competition this could mean we’re getting another two-seater super car with a Hybrid power plant.

To see which rumor is right we’ll have to wait another week or two, on October 2nd the probably black satin cover will be removed from a brand new Lamborghini model in Paris … I can’t wait to find out what we’ll be enjoying from Sant’Agata this time.

But owning a loaded factory specs Lamborghini Aventador just doesn’t cut it for some of the more eccentric owners out there and if you really want your Aventador look different without being too obvious turning your attention to DMC Exotic Car Tuning might turn out to be the best idea yet … and that is exactly what the owner of this specific Aventador in Malaysia did … call DMC and ask for something really special.

For starters the car was completely wrapped with a special matte blue shade … in fact this wrap isn’t a flat blue, there are tiny metallic flakes in the blue shade that really make the car shine in bright sunlight, while still being a matte material … does that remind you of another very, very special Lamborghini? It should as this is a similar metallic flake matte finish as seen on the limited edition Reventon, albeit on a grey base coat.

Now a wrapped Aventador is starting to be a familiar sight these days, so this Malaysian owner wanted to take his Bull to the next level of customization … and this is where DMC worked their magic with their beautiful Molto Veloce package consisting of a clear carbon fiber lower front spoiler, clear carbon fiber center fin in the original front bumper, Superleggera style clear carbon fiber side skirts.

Also note all the air intake surrounds that normally come out of the factory as matte black now show a really amazing clear carbon fiber finish too … in fact so many tuners started to offer this option for the Aventador it caught the attention of Automobili Lamborghini SpA … so they decided to offer it as a factory option on the MY2013 Aventador … however the clear carbon fiber exterior rear view mirrors are DMC units in this case.

At first glance you immediately notice the tall rear wing on the Aventador, in full Super Veloce style it is again finished in clear carbon fiber and available as part of the DMC Molto Veloce kit … as is the rear lower diffuser also showing carbon fiber from every angle … but take a closer look at the rear on this specific matte blue Aventador.

Did you catch the difference with the regular DMC Molto Veloce kit? The entire rear section including the rear wing, the lower diffuser and the panel between the taillights and rear air vents is showing a high gloss clear carbon fiber finish … and no, that isn’t part of the Molto Veloce kit but normally only available on the very limited production DMC SV (Spezial Version) kit of which only 10 worldwide are available.

So we are admiring a one of a kind car at this moment, perhaps we should call it the Aventador LP700-4 DMC SMV #1/1 for Spezial Molto Veloce one of one … sounds cool no?

Don’t expect to get any secrets out of this charismatic leader of one of the most important super car builders in the world today, but some details did get clarified about Lamborghini … like the production plans for the Urus concept SUV for instance … Mr Winkelmann couldn’t confirm actual production yet, but he did mention if this large Bull would become available to the public this wouldn’t happen before 2017.

And there is a very good reason for this long delay : there just isn’t any production space available at the factory in Sant’Agata … if they would start building the Urus in the current factory it would mean production for the Gallardo or the Aventador would be delayed, and especially on the Aventador this just isn’t an option at this moment as the waiting list is already very long, putting a third model on the production line would just make things worse.

So it could take another five years before any shape of SUV based on the Urus concept would be unveiled by Lamborghini, and another detail Mr Winkelmann mentioned is using hybrid technology on the Urus … that’s right, Lamborghini is thinking about a hybrid powered model in the future.

At this moment the hybrid system is just too large to be fitted into the aging Gallardo or even the current Aventador model, the additional weight would really influence the power to weight equation in such a negative way that Lamborghini isn’t even considering this option for the V10 or V12 model … but in an Urus based SUV production model the additional space available and the fact such a model isn’t marketed as a super exotic road car the option of a hybrid engine would make sense.

Another detail Mr Winkelmann mentioned would be the fact the Urus might not be built at the factory in Sant’Agata anyway, producing the large SUV inside the original factory would interfere too much with the production of the sports cars Lamborghini is famous for, so we might be seeing the Urus built on another location and shipped to Sant’Agata for final assembly or finishing … remember the same thing happened with the LM002 back in the days which came fully assembled from Spain.

On a totally different level it became evident during the interview that Automobili Lamborghini SpA will continue to create one-off models like the Aventador Jota based on actual production versions, also very limited production runs like the Reventon and more recently the Sesto Elemento will keep popping up from time to time … remember Lamborghini built an entirely new building just for this … prototyping, custom work and small production runs … so during this interview Mr Winkelmann just confirmed that once again.

Over the years things have changed, and today we also have the stunning Gallardo V10 (and in the past the V8 powered Urraco, Silhouette and Jalpa) but also the majestic Murciélago with his massive V12 engine pumping out no less than 670 horsepower in the latest SuperVeloce evolution … one thing these modern super cars have in common is the fact that they are not really environmental friendly to put it mildly.

That is why in a recent interview with Stephan Winkelmann he stated that there is in fact a Hybrid on the drawing boards at Automobili Lamborghini SpA right now, probably not a full electric car but more likely a petrol powered car with an additional electric engine.

This electric engine would power the car for city drives, when emissions are the highest, but once you want to apply some real power the mighty old gasoline engine kicks back in to offer you the thrilling driving experience we’ve become accustomed to from the Raging Bull.

So what models will be featuring an electric motor in the future ? Well probably none of the cars in the line up today, the Murciélago is about to be replaced by a successor in 2011 or 2012 at the latest, while the Gallardo will probably also be replaced or re-styled before 2015 … so we won’t be seeing an electric ‘aided’ Murciélago on the road in 2015, but what could be a very reasonable option is the Estoque or another front engine GT model.

Remember this stunning four door presented at the Paris Auto Salon back in 2008 ? Production has been postponed due to the bad economical climate these days, but I’m almost sure it will enter production in one form or another once the clouds clear up and sales go back up.

The original press release for this four door already stated the option of a V10 powered Estoque, but also a Hybrid version … so my best guess would be that the first Lamborghini car to receive the ‘green’ touch of a Hybrid version will be their new four door, four seater super saloon.

Several sources stated that Automobili Lamborghini was working on a Hybrid Gallardo to be unveiled in 2015, but I don’t think that we will still be seeing a Gallardo by then, it would mean a production span of over 12 years for this V10 model, somehow I don’t think it will take another 6 years for Lamborghini to amaze us with a successor to this entry level super car.

Sure they could be developing the Hybrid technology inside a Gallardo for now, but rest assured that they will commercialize it in a brand new model by 2015, not in a model that has been in production since 2003 in it’s original form with the LP560-4 revealed in 2008, only five years after the initial launch, so I don’t expect to see a Gallardo six years from now (or it would be yet another evolution like the LP560-4 was).
