But, the Nurburgring is also famous for being an official test track for some of the world’s biggest car manufacturers, and while you might think Lamborghini would take their cars to the Nardo track in Italy for testing, they also bring their new models to Germany to put down a time on the Nurburgring.

Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce

While we’ve found hundreds of unofficial videos over the years, the first official one from Lamborghini themselves about a car on the Ring dates back to May 2015, when they hammered the stunning Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce over the track:

The Aventador Superveloce was the first production car that managed to complete the entire 20.832 km (12.944 mi) Nurburgring track in under 7 minutes (6:59.73, to be exact). Truth be told, this was in a car with a full roll-cage, and which was fitted with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires during development. Still, it was an amazing feat in 2015 for a car with no turbochargers, no superchargers, and no hybrid propulsion—just a massively powerful V12 engine and special tires.

Before we get into an argument about my statement on the SV being the first production car to breach the 7-minute barrier—yes, I know about the Porsche 918 Spyder putting down a time of 6:57 in 2013, but that’s a hybrid car. I also know the Radical SR8 (6:55) and Radical SR8 LM (6:48.21) were faster in 2005 and 2009 respectively, but you can hardly call those two actual production cars, now can you?

So for me, the Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce was the first NA production car to be this fast around the track, period.

Lamborghini Huracán Performante

Only a year later, in late 2016, Automobili Lamborghini SpA was able to set another record on ‘the Ring’, this time with a car we wouldn’t get to see until the next year. The Lamborghini Huracán Performante, unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, managed to put down a time of just 6:52.01, making it the fastest production car at that time.

In late 2016 the only car that lapped the Nordschleife faster was the Radical SR8 LM (about 4 seconds faster), but again, nobody really considers that to be a production car, while the Huracán Performante surely was. Take a look at this impressive lap in the official video:

Today the Lamborghini Huracán Performante is no longer in production—but apart from the new (and insane-looking) Huracán STO, the 2017–2019 Performante is still considered one of the most aggressive-looking models in the entire Lamborghini V10 lineup. Let’s also not forget that this specific car introduced Active Lamborghini Aerodynamics to the world, with the adjustable flaps in the front bumper and inside the rear wing.

While some might argue whether such a performance version should only be made as a coupe, I was quite pleased Lamborghini decided to build the Huracán Performante Spyder. I like convertible cars, so I had no issue with the top of the line performance edition being sold as a Spyder too, and while the new Huracán EVO might have similar power to the Performante, I would still get one of the older ones—even if she doesn’t have the large touchscreen on the central console.

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ

Sadly, the reign of the Huracán Performante as the fastest production car in the world didn’t last long. By September 2017, Porsche shattered the record by about 5 seconds with their 911 GT2 RS (6:47.25). But Lamborghini retaliated in force a year later when the Aventador LP770-4 SVJ ran the Nordschleife in 6:44.97, once again bringing the title of fastest production car back to Sant’Agata (still under camouflage). Check out the video below:

By the time you read this, production of the Aventador SVJ will be swindling down. Production was limited at 900 Coupe and 800 Roadster versions, and all of them have been sold out for a long time, but right now the last units are being assembled at the Linea Aventador in Sant’Agata. In fact, you can’t order any Aventadors anymore—that had already been the case for the Aventador S, but with the Aventador LP780-4 Ultimae sold out too, no more classic V12 models are available.

But back to the 2018 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. This car came with ALA for the first time on the V12 flagship, and while the earlier Superveloce looked aggressively angular, the SVJ counterpart was more fluid—somewhat less aggressive-looking, but a stunning beauty in her own right. I for one really like the styling on the SVJ, even more so on the SVJ Roadster, but again, that’s my personal opinion.

Lamborghini Huracán STO

I know what you’re thinking: what about the new Lamborghini Huracán STO, or Super Trofeo Omologata—that car should be faster than the old Performante, right? The STO comes with 640 hp at 8,000 rpm, exactly the same number as the Performante, but strangely enough, the official specifications from Lamborghini show that the Performante is both faster and quicker.

Top speed on the old Performante is listed at 325 km/h (202 mph) while the STO only shows 310 km/h (193 mph), and the 0 to 100 km/h acceleration shows a similar difference, 2.9 seconds on the Performante, 3.0 seconds for the STO.

Make no mistake, Lamborghini did take the new Huracán STO to the Nurburgring Nordschleife, and they did some really fast stints on the track, but we never got an official video of it or any timing. There were some third-party videos posted about some controversy of this being a production version of the STO or a specifically prepared one for attacking the Green Hell record—but whichever it was, we don’t have an official timing from the Huracán STO on the Nordschleife.

The Current Record Holder

The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ held on to the track record for the fastest production car at the Nurburgring Nordschleife for about two years, but she got eclipsed by just one second when the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series managed to set a time of 6:43.62 in November 2020. A few months after that, Porsche came into the arena again, bringing their 911 GT2 RS (991.2) and set a blisteringly fast time of 6:38.835 on the 20.832 km track.

But once again there is some controversy. This was a car equipped with the Mantley Performance Kit, an official Porsche option available straight from the dealership, but should this be considered a real production car, or a ‘special order’? Whatever your opinion is, the fact the Aventador SVJ is still firmly in third place isn’t bad for a car that set her timing three years ago already.

The Lamborghini Miura – 385hp

In 1971 the Lamborghini Miura SV was built in Sant’Agata, only 150 units would be made eventually, but the transversely placed 4-Liter V12 engine was capable of 385 Bhp at 7,850 rpm at that time … almost 50 years later the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ would be available … with a 6.5-Liter V12 delivering 770 Bhp at 8,500 rpm … exactly double the power output of the legendary Miura SV.

Power output from the flagship V12 engines would steadily grow over the generations, even within the same model, the company kept developing the legendary V12 to perform better and better, in 1965 when the Miura P400 was introduced, power output was 350hp, in the Miura S from 1969 this would grow to 370hp, and by 1971 the ultimate SV version came with 385hp … now there are a few Miura SVJ built at Sant’Agata too, but I couldn’t find any details on increased hp tuning for the engines, so let’s keep it at 385hp for now.

The Lamborghini Countach – 455hp

After the Miura SV, Ferruccio decided it was time for something even more radical … time for the Countach, the first version from 1974 was the LP400, again a 4-Liter V12 engine but mounted longitudinally with an initial power output of 375 Bhp at 8,000 rpm, 10hp less than the Miura SV before.

Then something strange happened, the impressive, wide flared, winged Lamborghini Countach LP400 S from 1978 only had 353 Bhp at 7,500 rpm, it would take until 1982 for the Countach LP500 S to be back to 375 Bhp at 7,000 rpm from a V12 with 4,754 cc (290 ci) displacement … but both S versions were a little underpowered, so Lamborghini took the Countach to the next level by putting four valves per cylinder in the 1985 Countach Quattrovalvole with 455 hp at 7,000 rpm, making it the flagship in the series … the 1988 25th Anniversary edition came with different styling, but kept the same 5,167 cc (315 ci) engine.

The Lamborghini Diablo – 550hp

In 1990 the Lamborghini Diablo took over the reign from the Countach, still a V12 engine, but now enlarged to 5,707 cc (348 ci), power output raised to 492 Bhp at 7,000 rpm, enough to make the Diablo the fastest car at that time, in 1994 the Diablo SE30 would raise power again, this time to 525 Bhp at 7,000 rpm while the 1995 Diablo SV would have to settle for 510 Bhp at 7,100 rpm.

In 1999 a major mid-life remodel happened in the Diablo line up, the 2WD model was dropped, and only the VT, the SV, and the VT Roadster were available, all still with the 5,707cc V12 engine, but now with slightly more power: 530 Bhp at 7,100 rpm …but the final result wasn’t in yet … this would happen only a year later … the swansong of the Diablo range was the VT 6.0 made in 2000, this time the engine was enlarged to 5,992 cc (366 ci) and power output was 550 Bhp at 7,100 rpm.

Actually, the 2000 Diablo VT 6.0 took the engine from another Diablo model, the limited-edition GT, which used the 6-Liter engine first, and was, in fact, a street-legal version of the Diablo GT-R race car, but the Diablo GT was a limited production model of which only 80 would initially be made (in the end a total of 83 were built) … the Diablo GT did deliver an impressive 575 Bhp at 7,300 rpm.

The Lamborghini Murciélago – 670hp

In 2001 the Lamborghini Murciélago was introduced, the original 6.2 version used the by now well-known V12 engine again, but increased the displacement to 6,192 cc (378 ci) with a power output of 580 Bhp at 7,500 rpm, five years later, in 2006, Lamborghini unveiled the Murciélago LP640, with a 6,496 cc (396 ci) V12 engine and a power increase to 640 Bhp at 8,000 rpm … hence the LP640 designation, for ‘Longitudinale Posteriore 640 hp’.

But the famous flagship model in the Murciélago range was without a doubt the 2009 LP670-4 Superveloce model, and as the name suggests, this V12 brute delivered a total of 670 Bhp at 8,000 rpm, the intention was to build 350 units as the swansong to the Murciélago range, but in the end, only 185 left the factory doors before the Aventador took over.

The Lamborghini Aventador – 770hp

At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show the latest V12 model was unveiled, the Lamborghini Aventador, with a modified V12 engine no longer based on the original Bizzarinni design, a displacement of 6,498 cc (396 ci) and a power output of 700 Bhp at 8,250 rpm as the name suggests, four years later the Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce came around, the same engine now made 750 Bhp at 8,400 rpm while in 2017 the Aventador S was shown with 740 Bhp at 8,400 rpm.

The absolute flagship in the Aventador range became the 2019 SVJ version, this time power output was no less than 770 Bhp at 8,500 rpm, and while listed as a limited edition model, with a production number of 900 units it is still outnumbering all the previous V12 generations from the past …and it seems the end of the power increase hasn’t been reached yet as the Sian has the same V12 engine pumping out 785 hp (and an additional 34 hp from the e-motor).

So it seems the horsepower race isn’t over yet, but most likely we’ll be seeing the addition of electric motors from now one to raise power close to, or even beyond the 1,000 mark … only time will tell.

Only a month later, in August 2018 at Monterey, in California, the United States of America, the actual Aventador SVJ was unveiled to the public in bright Verde Alceo, a matt green finish, only 900 units would be available for this new SVJ Coupe … but things got even more exclusive as Lamborghini also unveiled the SVJ 63 edition, this one would receive some bespoke options from the Ad Personam studio like a clear carbon-fiber roof, engine cover, spoiler, and side sills, but more importantly, only 63 of these would be built, as a reminder of the fact Automobili Lamborghini SpA was founded in 1963.

Safe to say, the Aventador SVJ 63 was sold out very quickly, and while some amazing liveries have already been seen, but this latest one that was sold through Lamborghini Hong Kong Kingsway Cars Limited is something really special. This specific Coupe was ordered with a one of a kind, Ad Personam paint scheme to mimic the record car from 2018, showcasing a painted camouflage style, still with clear carbon fiber parts, but the entire car is matt finished, making this the only SVJ 63 Coupé like this.

There is still the large 63 on the door to celebrate this model, and the owner opted for an orange livery stripe on the front spoiler, side sills, and center strut for that massive SVJ rear wing, the owner even went as far as not to go with the cross-spoke Leirion wheels, but have the fitted with the same Nireo wheels as the actual record-breaking car, that’s attention to detail.

And while many owners went with the optional comfort seats inside their Aventador SVJ, this bespoke SVJ 63 was ordered with the lightweight, carbon-fiber sport seats, naturally in Nero Cosmus Alcantara combined with Arancio Leonis, orange livery and stitching.

Remember the amazing camouflage finish of the record-breaking Aventador SVJ at the Nordschleife already returned on Automobili Lamborghini’s collaboration with 24Bottles’s Clima Bottle and more recently on Cervélo’s R5 Automobili Lamborghini Edition bicycle.

Obviously, taking the Ad Personam route when ordering a new Lamborghini won’t come cheap, but you will end up with a truly bespoke car unlike any other, and what’s more, you’ll have the help from people right at the factory to decide on details the Ad Personam consultants know exactly what is possible, and what is probably a little more expensive to do impossible is a word you’ll not likely hear I guess.

At the time of writing traveling to Italy to visit the Lamborghini factory and have a meeting with the Ad Personam Studio might not be possible, so Automobili Lamborghini SpA came up with a solution and introduced a very special, very limited edition of the current flagship, the Aventador SVJ Xago Edition.

Only ten Aventador SVJ Xago Edition will be built, each one of them individually put together by an Ad Personam consultant with a customer during an initial two-hour virtual meeting. A customer can have his dealer ask for this meeting, during which they can call in from all over the world and be in direct contact with the Ad Personam specialist right at the factory, surrounded by samples of what is possible.

During this virtual meeting, the customer can discuss options and special requests, the Ad Personam consultant will show samples from within the Studio, even a real-life car of the model the customer is looking to buy will be shown, while the consultant has a camera to show details of whichever item the customer has questions about. After the meeting, the customer will be sent an entire set of renderings of his/her bespoke Lamborghini, sometimes even accompanied by material samples.

To celebrate this new Ad Personam possibility Lamborghini announced the Avenador SVJ Xago special edition, as already mentioned, only 10 will be made, and this Ad Personam special will only be available to customers that specify their new SVJ virtually through this new option.

Special for the Xago Edition are the silver hexagon fading effects on the outside of the Aventador SVJ, to celebrate the famous ‘hexagonita’ style in Lamborghini design, a contrasting livery will be unique for the Xago edition while the interior receives a similar hexagon design on the seats and the same contrasting color as the outside livery. Every single one of the ten Aventador SVJ Xago editions will receive a numbered plate to identify this extremely limited edition model from Sant’Agata.

Lamborghini’s Ad Personam program was launched in 2013 but it would take until 2016 to put together a real Ad Personam Studio at the factory at this time over half of all Lamborghini cars built in Sant’Agata have one or more Ad Personam options, mainly for customers in the USA, Asia, and the UK.

So if you managed to get hold of an allocation for this amazing car, and the factory official Ad Personam bespoke options didn’t quite satisfy your appetite for having a ‘different’ car than your neighbor (there are places where the neighbors also own one or more Lamborghinis) you might have to turn to a tuner … and why not take a look at what Novitec has to offer in their Torado range for the Raging Bull models.

For the Aventador SVJ the catalog from Novitec might not be as custom as others, but keep in mind these are bespoke, high-end aerodynamic options that modify the original car just enough to stand out to those that know what they are looking at, and Novitec has been offering parts for the Aventador, the Aventador SV and the Aventador S already, both in Coupe and Roadster form, so the latest SVJ couldn’t be left out.

And what about these other touches of carbon fiber … a front spoiler lip to be mounted underneath the original bumper, or fins to be fitted on the top of the bumper where the SVJ has a pair of air vents, and a similar pair of fins can be glued on the air vents behind the engine cover while an impressive ‘tunnel’ is available to direct air into the centre mounted air intake on the bottom of the rear wing … naturally, a pair of carbon fiber side sills complete the aerodynamic kit from Novitec for the SVJ.

Novitec already offered a set of NL4 Forged Wheels for the Aventador Superveloce, now these Vossen made wheels are also available for the Aventador SVJ, 9×20 up front and 12×21 inch at the rear with Pirelli P-Zero 255/30 R20 and 355/25 R31 respectively … available in 72 different shades and finishes, whatever the customer prefers.

A set of lowering springs is available from Novitec too, these will put the Aventador SVJ about 35mm closer to the road while different exhausts are available to make the SVJ even louder, but more importantly, you can also lower the weight by 19kg compared to the original exhaust system.

On the Aventador SVJ 63 Roadster the Lamborghini Centro Stile design worked together with the Ad Personam department to create eight exclusive designs only available on the Aventador SVJ 63 Roadster, using either matt or shiny carbon fiber on the roof, engine cover, intakes, window trim and rearview mirrors, while the Leirion wheels get a matt titanium finish.

For the interior we get a pair of lightweight carbon fiber seats covered in Alcantara while a massive ’63’ logo is fitted to the section between the seats, a special badge on the steering wheel clearly identifies this car as one of only 63 special edition models, using the patented CarbonSkin throughout the interior.

Exterior finish on the Pebble Beach show car is Grigio Acheso (matt grey) combined with Arancio Dac for the SVJ logo and 63 badges, the Leirion wheels get a color-matched orange center lock while the interior is finished in Grigio Octans, Grigio Cronus, and Arancio Dryope, the seats get a Bianco cross-stitch.

The Aventador SVJ 63 Roadster still pumps out 770 hp from the big V12 with 720 Nm of torque, reaching 100km/h from a standstill takes only 2.9 seconds while 200 km/h is reached in 8.8 seconds, top speed is over 350 Km/h.

As I already mentioned, all 63 units of the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ 63 Roadster are already sold, customers will take delivery of their cars in 2020.

So the Aventador SVJ has become a limited edition model after all, there was  rumor they would build as much as were ordered (similar to the Huracan Performante), but the press release now states only 900 will be built in coupé form (there is a Roadster still to be unveiled later on, probably with similar production numbers) oh wait, there will also be 63 additional special edition SVJ built, called the SVJ63 in celebration to the year Lamborghini was founded, 1963.

Performance

While the Aventador SV was based on the LP700-4 edition, this new SVJ is based on the Aventador S, so there are a few updates like the rear wheel steering system for instance, but also a power increase of 20hp up to a total of 770hp at 8,50 rpm for the SVJ, so you could call it the Aventador LP770-4 SVJ, but Lamborghini is no longer using this type of denomination for their models today.

The Aventador SVJ will most likely become the last naturally aspirated V12 powered car to be built in Sant’Agata, the successor has been confirmed to be a hybrid, so the Super Veloce Jota will become a very important car in the future, this is an instant collectible and the figures aren’t bad either.

With 770 hp at 8,500 rpm and a torque value of 720Nm at 6,750 rpm to propel a dry weight of 1,525 kg (the same weight as the Aventador SV) to a maximum top speed of over 350 km/h, acceleration figures of 2.8 seconds to 100 km/h from a standstill and a mere 8.6 seconds to reach 200 km/h the Aventador SVJ boasts an impressive power to weight ratio of  0.50 hp/kg.

And while numbers do show the potential of the new Aventador SVJ, which set a new world record for production cars on the famous Nürurgring-Nordschleife track in Germany at 6:44.97 minutes, this SVJ was also developed into a true driver’s car, not just a track weapon for the weekend.

Aventador SVJ Interior & Exterior Design

The Aventador SVJ is a showcase of new technology and aerodynamics the SVJ comes with ALA 2.0, the now-famous Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva system first seen on the Huracan Performante, again flaps in the front bumper and inside the new rear wing control the air flow as needed for any specific situation, both on the road and on the track.

The rear wing has a central air intake, but internally there are two separate ducts that can be opened and closed independently, so in a high-speed curve the system can put more downforce on one wheel and release downforce on the opposite one the entire underbody of the SVJ has been specifically designed for this purpose.

Compared to the Aventador SV, the SVJ comes with a 40% increase in downforce while drag is 1% less thanks to the redesigned aerodynamics on the upper body of the SVJ, Lamborghini achieved a 70% increase over the SV the ALA system will keep all flaps closed for the maximum downforce in corners, but for acceleration and to reach top speed the flaps are opened for less drag.

The massive rear wing on the Aventador SVJ comes with vertical side fins for maximum stability, combined with vertical fins on the front bumper this keeps the car stable at all speeds, on the side of the SVJ the new sills also show an innovative Y shape on the enlarged intakes while the massive rear diffuser boasts several vertical stabilization fins too while two massive exhaust pipes are mounted higher up at the rear, closer to the engine, thus lowering the weight compared to the older, four tip exhausts.

With a large rear wing featuring a new aerofoil, the new engine cover comes with a look-through window showing the bronze manifolds on top of the V12, and large vents to keep the engine cool, do note this carbon fiber engine cover now comes with quick release fasteners inspired by the race track.

The engine has been modified with titanium intake valves, newly shaped intake runners and length,  and a modified intake cylinder head duct for higher flow coefficient, the exhaust has less backpressure and the 7-speed ISR gearbox has been optimized to cope the increase in power and torque.

A stiffer suspension together with LRS (rear-wheel steering) and a reconfiguration of the power steering system, Lamborghini Dynamic Steering (LDS) allows for a 3% increase of torque to be sent to the rear wheels .. .because of this Pirelli was asked to develop new tires for the Aventador SVJ with stiffer sidewalls, standard fitment are Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, while the track oriented P Zero Trofeo R tires are optionally available.

Navigation systems and the infotainment are an option on the Aventador SVJ, depending on the customer wishes to get a street-legal track car with the least amount of weight, or if they prefer some more creature comforts they can even opt for the electrical comfort seats to replace the lightweight carbon fiber seats, due to the limited view through the new engine cover you can even opt to drop the interior rearview mirror and go for a rear view camera system instead.

As of 2018, the order book on the Aventador SVJ has filled up very quickly, and rumor has it all 900 units are already sold out, priced at €350,000 in Europe and $518,000 in the USA, before taxes and options, the Aventador SVJ price can quickly raise a lot higher when you opt for the limitless Ad Personam personalization possibilities.

The distillation of extraordinary design, groundbreaking technologies and the ultimate in handling, performance and driver enjoyment, the Aventador SVJ creates pure driving perfection, taking the concept of a super sports car to a new dimension.

The new Aventador SVJ, where SV historically stands for Superveloce – meaning ‘superfast’ – takes the ‘Jota’ suffix, denoting its track and performance superiority: the Aventador SVJ has already claimed its position as the Nürburgring-Nordschleife production car record holder, completing the 20.6 km lap in just 6:44.97 minutes. Production is limited to 900 units.

A special edition, named SVJ 63, is exclusively unveiled on the concept lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It pays homage to Lamborghini’s founding year of 1963: produced in a unique configuration, it demonstrates the rich use of carbon fiber and is made in an additional limited number of just 63.

The Aventador SVJ takes another step into the future, shaping the potential for super sports car development.”

Improved performance in all aspects

The Aventador SVJ’s Nürburgring-Nordschleife lap record is living proof of its benchmarking performance. With its optimized power plant making it the most powerful series production V12-engined car produced to date by Lamborghini, the SVJ features an increase in power to 770 hp (566 kW) at maximum 8,500 rpm. The SVJ outputs 720 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm, while a dry weight of just 1,525 kg gives the SVJ a weight-to-power ratio of 1.98 kg/hp. The SVJ accelerates from standing to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 8.6 seconds.  A top speed of more than 350 km/h is complemented by a braking distance of 100 km/h to 0 in 30 meters.

The Aventador SVJ is, however, more than a super sports car achieving the top numbers. The development philosophy of the Aventador SVJ and its very essence in terms of design, aerodynamic technologies and efficiency, weight-to-power as well as performance, is to create a demanding driver’s perfect car.

The Aventador SVJ – designed for aerodynamic supremacy

Every feature of the Aventador SVJ resonates its aerodynamic prowess: the SVJ is significantly enhanced in appearance compared to the Aventador S, with every facet of its ‘form follows function’ design a reminder of its raison d’être on road and track: innovate to be the best. The main goal in design was a significant downforce improvement compared to the previous Aventador SV: +40% on both axles with an improved drag coefficient -1%.

From the front the car is wider: a new front bumper with integrated side fins features a new air intake and highlights the inclusion of Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA), Lamborghini’s patented active aerodynamics technologies.

The disconnected front splitter continues the impression of a floating component, while providing a channel for airflow. A tri-dimensional air outlet on the hood directs airflow, improves both drag and downforce, and clearly alludes to the aerodynamic purpose of the SVJ’s design. The upper body aerodynamic optimization has contributed 70% to the total downforce improvement in the SVJ over the SV.

The SVJ’s rocker is entirely new, adopting the ‘Y’ theme found in Lamborghini cars while also resembling shapes found in jet fighters. The bigger side air intakes and the new front side fins reduce drag and improve overall cooling. An improved underbody aero design with vortex generators works in conjunction with front diffusers and a new, extreme-design rear diffuser, together with divergent fins, contributes 30% to the total downforce improvement.

The rear wing of the SVJ has been designed for best aerodynamic efficiency, based on a new air foil; an optimized ALA 2.0 system; and side winglets to reduce turbulence while providing high downforce on the straight as well as in high speed corners.

At the rear of the car the position of the high-mounted naked exhaust resembles those found on extreme motorbikes, as well as saving weight due to its proximity to the engine: the exhaust system itself is also lighter. The Omega-shape rear bumper incorporates a massive new diffuser that contributes to downforce, while a new high-mounted rear wing is produced entirely in carbon fiber with its integrated ALA system.

The new rear engine bonnet has been redesigned for the SVJ: it is made from lightweight carbon fiber and removable via quick release clips in a reference to motor racing. It also adopts the ‘Y’ theme that reveals the updated V12 power plant below, while accenting the car’s high performance characteristics. Super-light ‘Nireo’ aluminum rims are designed specifically for the SVJ, saving weight and contributing to the extreme dynamism of the car. Optional ‘Leirion’ aluminum rims with ‘Y’ and hexagonal details are also available. The Italian flag detail on the side wing is a reminder of the Lamborghini’s Italian super sports car heritage.

Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva 2.0

Lamborghini’s patented ALA system was first seen on the Huracán Performante, and has been developed to an enhanced level for the Aventador SVJ, now ALA 2.0, including new optimized air inlets and aero channel designs. The system has been re-calibrated taking into account the enhanced vehicle’s lateral accelerations.

The ALA system actively varies aero load to achieve high downforce or low drag, depending on dynamic conditions. Electronically-actuated motors open or close active flaps in the front splitter and on the engine bonnet that steer the air-flow, front and rear.

Utilizing Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Attiva 2.0 (LDVA 2.0) with improved inertial sensors that govern all the car’s electronic systems in real time, the ALA system flaps are activated in less than 500 milliseconds to ensure the best aerodynamic set-up of the car in every driving condition. When ALA is off, the active flaps are closed, generating the desired high downforce for high speed cornering and full brake conditions. When ALA switches to ‘on’ the front flaps are opened, reducing air pressure on the front spoiler and directing air flow via an inner channel and through the specially-shaped vortex generators on the underside of the car. This drastically reduces drag and optimizes conditions for maximum acceleration and top speed.

When ALA is off the rear flaps are also closed, allowing the rear wing to act as a traditional fixed wing. Stability is enhanced in high speed cornering and full braking by creating maximum vertical downforce. When ALA is ‘on’ the flaps on the engine bonnet open in order to stall the wing for improved drag in high speed conditions.

In addition, the rear wing’s inner air channel is split right and left, allowing aero vectoring for high speed cornering. Depending on the direction of the turn, the LDVA 2.0 instructs ALA to be switched on in either the right or left side of the wing, increasing downforce and traction on the inner wheel and counteracting the load transfer in rolling conditions. This in turn optimizes the chassis’ momentum, requiring a reduced steering angle and improving the car’s overall dynamic stability. The aero vectoring technology in the SVJ has been further developed to improve the aero-loading effects on the inner wheel by 30% compared to the original system.

Engineering technology

The enhanced powertrain features a new titanium intake valve with a new-shape intake runner and length, with a modified intake cylinder head duct for higher flow coefficient. The new, lightweight exhaust system reduces backpressure as well as producing the most emotive sound, and the optimized seven-speed Independent Shifting Road (ISR) gearbox has been calibrated for the car’s increased performance in terms of both power and torque.

The Aventador SVJ’s vertical, lateral and longitudinal dynamics have been re-engineered in LDVA 2.0, with algorithms fully integrated within ALA 2.0 to reflect the exceptional downforce generated and optimize performance: the result of significant R&D investment and collaboration with the CFD team.

The SVJ’s suspension has been reworked, providing higher mechanical and aerodynamic grip. Anti-roll bar stiffness has been improved by 50% compared to the Aventador SV, compensating against roll and improving aero efficiency. A higher damping force range, increased by 15% over the SV, and Lamborghini’s Magneto Rheological Suspension (LMS) has been recalibrated to improve body and wheel control with a focus on track performance.

The Aventador SVJ’s rear-wheel steering (LRS) is further engineered to exploit the aero load in every environment, providing exceptional stability in high speed conditions and improving agility in cornering to enhance average speed in all dynamic conditions.

The Aventador SVJ’s steering has also been developed to provide the feedback demanded in high-performance track and racing environments. The rebalanced power steering reflects the specific aero load and tires, and the Lamborghini Dynamic Steering (LDS) is recalibrated to further improve steering precision and natural feedback.

The Lamborghini SVJ’s four-wheel drive system has improved torque split to maximize traction and agility, with the higher stability of the SVJ allowing a further 3% of torque to be sent to the rear axle compared to the SV. The rear-wheel steering has been developed to further improve the car’s stability while reducing braking distances, particularly in combined braking/turning conditions such as high speed cornering. ESC has been enhanced for improved cornering and driver experience in extreme handling conditions, and ABS has been specifically tuned for the improved grip provided by the tires and ALA system.

New Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires have been specifically developed, according to Lamborghini’s brief for the SVJ: the tires provide higher vertical stiffness to accommodate the SVJ’s higher downforce, as well as provide a high grip level to enhance overall vehicle performance.  Featuring a specific tread design, the tires are designed to optimize performance on both road and track. Optional street-legal Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires can be mounted specifically for track use.

A driver’s car

The Aventador SVJ is a driver-focused car, developed to maximize the union between driver and car in the most extreme road and track conditions and ensure the most rewarding experience.

With Lamborghini’s three driving modes, Strada, Sport and Corsa, as well as the EGO option allowing the driver to further customize his preferences for car set-up, the cockpit features Kombi graphics on the TFT digital dashboard display as well as showing live status of the ALA functions.

The Navigation System and Infotainment System including AppleCarPlay come as an option free of charge, allowing the cockpit’s occupants to manage voice activated communications and entertainment from personal Apple devices.

The Lamborghini telemetry system is an optional specification: recording lap times and track performance as well as trip data, the telemetry system is especially appealing to the owner who wants to take his car on track.

The interior specification of the Aventador SVJ is virtually limitless through Lamborghini’s Ad Personam customization program.

Today we give you our renders on the Aventador SVJ based on the latest test mule photos, this is how we think the SVJ will look when Automobili Lamborghini SpA unveils her at Pebble Beach in late August.

To avoid any certification and keeping the SVJ street legal all over the world, the basis are taken from the current Aventador S, but on the SVJ a lot of aerodynamic additions are installed on top of the rear-wheel steering and the 740 hp of the V12 used in the Aventador S has been upgraded to 770 hp, the same power output as the limited edition Centenario. (Remember the Aventador SV came with 750 hp, the same as the Veneno).

On the Aventador SVJ, we get a totally redesigned engine cover, which happens to come with a central intake for the ALA system, the Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva or active aerodynamics which is responsible for achieving that amazing Ring record by altering the downforce ‘on the go’ while on the track. The new engine cover will possibly even feature a glass center section (or Lexan for weight savings) and will require two people to remove using quick release fasteners … this engine cover is not hinged as seen on the regular Aventador.

A new front bumper is fitted to the SVJ with several intakes and vents that can open and close when the ALA deems it necessary, that massive rear wing with central strut isn’t for show either, it might feature only one intake, but internally it has two separate sections that can be opened or closed independently from each other … so in a corner the ALA system can increase downforce on one side of the SVJ while decreasing drag on the opposite side … the Aventador SVJ boasts 40% more downforce compared to the Aventador SV and has 1% less drag. At top speed, the Aventador SVJ aerodynamics create 490kg of downforce split at 40/60 front to rear (about 190 kg on the front and 300 kg at the rear of the SVJ, the SV downforce was split 20/80 for comparison). Because of this increased downforce, especially detectable in corners, the tires had to be redesigned with a stiffer sidewall to cope with the G-forces the SVJ inflicts on them, to cope with the additional downforce the suspension has been made stiffer and the anti-roll bars are tougher too.

The 6.5 liter, naturally aspirated V12 has also been ‘doctored’ for the new Aventador SVJ, adding new, titanium intake valves and ducts, the two manifolds on the engine are now finished in bronze instead of black, just like on the Huracan Performante V10. Add a new, high mounted exhaust system that offers less back pressure and power comes up to 770 hp at 8,500 rpm now and maximum torque is 531lb ft at 6,750 rpm while weight is 1,525 kg (same as the Aventador SV), naturally performance figures aren’t available yet, but if the driving experience is anything to go by, the Aventador SVJ seems to be the best of the best.

One rumor stated the Aventador Super Veloce Jota would be a limited production model along the lines of the Aventador SV, but lately, several sources stated the SVJ will not be limited and become a production model just like the Huracan Performante … whatever they decide in Sant’Agata, the Aventador SVJ will most likely be the last of the N/A V12 models ever made by Lamborghini, in an interview  Maurizio Reggiani, director of R&D at Lamborghini has confirmed the successor for both the V12 and the V10 range will receive electrical assistance … they both will become hybrids.

Judging from the few videos that have been posted online, it seems the interior of the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is very close to the one already seen in the SV version, and from what we understand the same carbon fiber, lightweight sports seats are fitted … let’s hope they still offer the more comfortable, standard Aventador seats as an option as they did on the SV, as several owners have complained about those stunning looking sports seats for being rather uncomfortable.

Now I would have expected Lamborghini to fit the large display on the central console as we’ve seen inside the Centenario, but that doesn’t seem to be the case, instead the standard one is still there, probably as an option as on the Aventador SV you could order her without that display … to save a little more weight.

So will the 2019 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, or Super Veloce Jota, be the swansong for the Aventador range … or is there something even more impressive still to come … an Aventador GT for instance? We highly doubt that to be honest … a lot of magazines have already mentioned we’ll be seeing the Aventador successor unveiled in 2020, that would mean at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show … but that might not be possible if you ask us.

Think about it … if they want to have the Aventador successor ready for an unveiling at the 2020 Geneva show that would mean they have to start replacing the current Aventador assembly line at the factory as early as August 2019, when the factory closes down for the Summer holiday, which means they only have about 12 months of Aventador production left … taking into account the numbers of previous years, that would mean a total of about 1,200 Aventador can still be built … right now the delivery time on the V12 is about 9 months, so they already have 900 Aventador on order still to be built, mostly Aventador S and Aventador S Roadster … now they have to build all the Aventador SVJ and Aventador SVJ Roadster (is has been confirmed to be developed) too … if we say they will make the same number SVJ as they did SV that means 1,100 additional cars … they don’t have enough time left to build those if they want to unveil the successor in 2020 already.

So we think the Aventador will be in production for 10 years, just like the Murciélago was, with a replacement at the 2021 Geneva Motor Show only … also keep in mind there is a rumor about a very limited production LB48H model that also has to be built on Aventador basics … but these 63 or so units might not be assembled inside the factory, remember Lamborghini has a special ‘Prototype and Pre-Series’ facility on their grounds … they could be building the LB48H instead.

Whatever they decide about the future of the Lamborghini Aventador, it is safe to say the new SVJ will be groundbraking for the company, and perhaps become the most important, modern V12 model ever in their history as being the final N/A V12 made.

The camouflaged Aventador SVJ with official Lamborghini driver Marco Mapelli at the helm, took on the lap-time test at the 20.6 km track. The challenge was managed by Lamborghini’s Research and Development team, with extensive tire support from Pirelli technicians and driver. Fitted with cameras inside and out and full telemetry, under the formal scrutiny of Remak personnel who managed time and GPS certification using VBOX-Racelogic instrumentation, the lap attempt of the Aventador SVJ was performed during an exclusive session on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

“The Aventador SVJ takes the Jota suffix, following the Lamborghini tradition for denoting a car’s track-focused talent. This new car is the convergence of Lamborghini technologies to produce a super sports car that transcends current performance benchmarks,” says Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Stefano Domenicali. “Its tenure as the Nürburgring lap time record holder, even before its unveiling during the Monterey Car Week in California in August, endorses Lamborghini’s competence in applying superlative design engineering and ground-breaking technologies. The SVJ is a super sports car at the zenith of performance, while also ensuring unrivalled driving pleasure.”

“This is another demonstration of the exceptional skills and teamwork by the dedicated personnel within Automobili Lamborghini: from the R&D team, as well as from our test drivers and, of course, partners such as Pirelli,” adds Chief Technical Officer, Maurizio Reggiani.

The Aventador SVJ is created to feature higher power output, with lightweight materials contributing to the best weight-to-power ratio of only 1,98 kg/hp. It features Lamborghini’s patented ALA 2.0 active aerodynamics system with aero vectoring for the best handling and downforce, as well as new aerodynamic features specific to the SVJ.

Development of the car included significant CFD simulation to optimize the ALA performance, with the exceptional downforce requiring an entire rework of the Aventador’s active and passive dynamic systems to exploit the car’s physical boundaries. Developing ALA strategies for the Aventador SVJ through both static and dynamic virtual simulations, a virtual attempt at the Nürburgring Nordschleife already returned a better lap time than the Lamborghini Huracán Performante.

The set-up of the Aventador SVJ has been entirely re-engineered to enhance its four-wheel drive system, rear-wheel steering and ESC. Significantly stiffer than the Aventador LP 750-4 SV, the steering has been retuned in the SVJ. The Aventador SVJ features a new specifically-developed Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires as standard. For the lap-time attempt the optional Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires were mounted.

In 2015 the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 SV delivered a sub-seven minute lap time, and in 2016 the Huracán Performante took the Nürburgring Nordschleife production car record, with a lap time of 6:52.01, which it held until September 2017.
