A V10 Supercar With Mud Guards: Lamborghini’s Sterrato Concept Arrives
In June 2019, Lamborghini showed the world something genuinely strange: a Huracán wearing balloon tires, aluminum skid plates, and a roof-mounted LED light bar. The Huracán Sterrato concept took the company’s mid-engine V10 platform and reimagined it for gravel, dirt, and loose surfaces, pairing 640 horsepower with mud guards made from a hybrid of carbon fiber and elastomeric resin. The name itself, Sterrato, translates roughly to “dirt road” in Italian. Subtlety was not the objective.
What made the concept land so forcefully was its refusal to be a rendering exercise. Lamborghini built the Sterrato on the Huracán EVO’s architecture, retaining the 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 and the full LDVI vehicle dynamics system, then recalibrating everything for low-adherence surfaces. Ground clearance rose by 47 mm. The wheel track widened by 30 mm front and rear. Underbody reinforcements, aluminum-reinforced side skirts, and stone-deflecting composite bodywork around the engine and air intakes gave the car genuine off-road protection. The orange and black rally livery, complete with a “63” graphic nodding to Lamborghini’s founding year, made the intent unmistakable.
According to some accounts, the initial idea may have emerged from a casual discussion between design head Mitja Borkert and then-CTO Maurizio Reggiani around 2017. Whether or not it literally started over a glass of wine, the result was a concept that asked a question nobody in the supercar segment was seriously entertaining: what if a mid-engine V10 could be genuinely fun on unpaved roads?
Engineering a Supercar for Surfaces It Was Never Meant to Touch
Raising a Huracán by 47 mm sounds simple on paper. In practice, it required rethinking how the car’s entire dynamic architecture behaves when the surface beneath it stops being predictable.
The LDVI system, Lamborghini’s integrated vehicle dynamics controller, uses predictive logic to coordinate four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, torque vectoring, and suspension behavior. For the Sterrato concept, Lamborghini recalibrated the system specifically for off-road conditions, prioritizing traction and acceleration on loose surfaces. The result, according to the company, was enhanced rear-wheel drive behavior with additional stabilization during oversteer, allowing the car to rotate on gravel without the electronics panicking and shutting everything down.
The tires were purpose-developed. Larger sidewalls improved the car’s ability to absorb rough terrain, while wide, rugged shoulder blocks with open tread patterns provided self-cleaning capability, better off-road grip, and high damage resistance. These sat on 20-inch wheels housed in new wide-body arches that incorporated their own air intakes. The front approach angle sharpened by 1%, and the departure angle improved by 6.5%, small numbers that matter enormously when a car with this little ground clearance encounters a trail.
Inside, the concept went further than cosmetic changes. A lightweight titanium roll cage, four-point seatbelts, carbon bi-shell sports seats, and aluminum floor panels signaled that Lamborghini treated this as a serious engineering exercise, not a show-stand curiosity. The rear skid plate doubled as a functional diffuser, a detail that captures the concept’s central tension: this car wanted to be a supercar and an off-roader simultaneously, and the engineering team refused to sacrifice either identity entirely.

Bob Wallace’s Desert Racers and the DNA Behind the Concept
Lamborghini referenced its own history when positioning the Sterrato, and the connection runs deeper than marketing convenience. In 1973, test driver Bob Wallace modified a Jarama into a desert-going performance car. A year later, he did the same with an Urraco. Both were unofficial, borderline rogue projects, the kind of engineering experiments that happen when a talented driver with workshop access decides to see what a car can really do.
Wallace’s rally cars never reached production, but they established a thread in Lamborghini’s identity that the company revisits when it wants to justify something unconventional. The Sterrato concept pulled that thread deliberately. Reggiani described the car as an illustration of Lamborghini’s commitment to shaping future directions, connecting the concept to a lineage of internal experimentation that predates the Urus by decades.
The timing mattered, too. By 2019, the Urus had already proven that Lamborghini could sell a vehicle designed for unpaved surfaces in enormous numbers. The Sterrato concept took the opposite approach: instead of building a high-riding SUV with supercar performance, it asked whether a low-slung supercar could absorb enough off-road capability to be genuinely usable beyond tarmac. The Urus answered a market question. It asked a philosophical one.
From Concept to Sold-Out Production Run
Concepts that reach production without being diluted beyond recognition are rare. The Huracán Sterrato is one of them.
Lamborghini unveiled the production Sterrato at Art Basel in Miami in late 2022, and the car that arrived retained the concept’s core proposition: raised ride height, widened track, off-road calibrated dynamics, underbody protection, and the roof-mounted light bar. The production model achieved 6.4 inches of ground clearance. Reports indicate that all 1,499 units produced between 2023 and 2024 were spoken for, making the Sterrato one of the most successful limited-run Huracáns by any measure.
The production car also served as the model’s farewell, the last non-hybrid variant in the lineup before the Temerario era. Owners who wanted a naturally aspirated V10 Lamborghini with a genuinely different character from the STO or Tecnica found their answer here. Many buyers, according to enthusiast forum discussion, spec these cars knowing they will rarely see gravel. The raised ride height alone solves one of the most persistent anxieties of supercar ownership: scraping the front lip on driveways and speed bumps. That practical benefit, unglamorous as it sounds, made the Sterrato appealing to owners who wanted a daily-capable Huracán without the compromises of a track-focused variant.
Lamborghini later expanded the Sterrato’s identity through Ad Personam‘s All-Terrain series, offering four bespoke themes (Neve, Sabbia, Terra, Bosco) with camouflage-inspired paintwork and unique interior treatments. The concept’s DNA kept generating revenue long after the initial reveal.
What the Sterrato Means for Lamborghini’s Competitive Future
Porsche launched the 911 Dakar in late 2022, arriving at essentially the same idea: take a legendary sports car platform and raise it for off-road use. The Dakar drew comparisons to the Sterrato immediately, but Lamborghini’s concept predated it by more than three years. Whether Porsche developed the Dakar independently or responded to the same market signals Lamborghini identified first is an open question, but the chronology favors Sant’Agata.
The more interesting competitive implication is forward-looking. Autoblog reports that future Lamborghini models could head off-road, suggesting the Sterrato’s success opened doors for similar treatments on the Temerario or even the Revuelto platform. A Temerario Sterrato, pairing the new twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain with raised suspension and off-road calibration, would represent a logical evolution. Lamborghini has not confirmed such a model, but the commercial argument writes itself: 1,499 units sold out suggests demand exists for more.
The Sterrato concept also demonstrated something about Lamborghini’s product strategy that competitors struggle to replicate. Ferrari builds special editions around track performance. McLaren builds them around weight reduction. Lamborghini builds them around personality. The Sterrato, the STO, the Tecnica: each carved a distinct character from the same Huracán platform without cannibalizing the others. That ability to fragment a single architecture into genuinely different buyer propositions is a competitive advantage that extends well into the hybrid era.
For buyers watching the Temerario’s development, the Sterrato concept offers a useful signal. Lamborghini’s willingness to pursue ideas that look absurd on paper, then execute them with enough engineering rigor to sell out a production run, suggests the next generation of special editions will be equally unpredictable. The concept that started, perhaps, over a glass of wine in 2017 ended up reshaping how Lamborghini thinks about what a supercar can be.
