Four Cars, One Brand Argument at Goodwood 2019
Lamborghini arrived at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed with a display that covered an unusually wide range for a single manufacturer: the one-off SC18 Alston running up the famous hill, a fully restored 1992 Minardi Formula One car powered by a Lamborghini V12, the UK public dynamic debuts of the Huracán EVO coupe and Spyder, and the flagship Aventador SVJ holding court in the Supercar Paddock. Le Mans legend Emanuele Pirro joined Squadra Corse drivers behind the wheel of the Huracán EVO Spyder for good measure.
The coherence behind the variety is what made the weekend stand out. Lamborghini framed it as a celebration of past, present, and future, but the practical effect was a demonstration that few rivals could match in breadth. Ferrari regularly brings Special Projects cars and heritage machines to events, and McLaren’s MSO division produces striking bespoke commissions. Lamborghini’s Goodwood stand, though, wove its racing division, its heritage restoration arm, and its current production range into a single weekend. The SC18 Alston: Squadra Corse Builds a Road Car, Once
The SC18 Alston remains one of Lamborghini’s most fascinating modern creations. Built as the first one-off by Squadra Corse, Lamborghini’s motorsport division, in collaboration with Centro Stile and a private customer, it was unveiled in November 2018 and arrived at Goodwood loaned by its owner specifically to attack the hill climb.
Underneath the carbon fiber body sits the Aventador SVJ platform and its 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12, which Lamborghini says produces 770 hp and 720 Nm of torque in this application. The bodywork, finished in Grigio Daytona grey with red accents, borrows its aerodynamic philosophy directly from the race shop. Front air intakes echo the Huracán GT3 EVO, while the side fenders, fins, and airscoops draw from the Huracán Super Trofeo EVO. A large carbon fiber rear wing offers three mechanical adjustment positions, and twelve air intakes on the rear hood handle heat management for the mid-mounted V12. All of that, and the car is road-homologated.
What the SC18 represented structurally mattered as much as its spec sheet. Before this car, Squadra Corse built race machines. After it, the door was open for the motorsport division to apply its aerodynamic and engineering knowledge to bespoke road-legal projects. Ferrari’s Special Projects division and McLaren’s MSO had already established that ultra-wealthy clients will pay for singular creations, but Lamborghini routed the work through its racing engineers rather than a separate coachbuilding team. The distinction matters: the SC18’s aero package was not decorative but derived from endurance racing data, then adapted for road legality. Lamborghini did not disclose the car’s price, and the company has not publicly detailed how many subsequent one-off commissions followed through Squadra Corse, but the SC18 proved the concept was viable.
Lamborghini’s Forgotten F1 Chapter, Restored by Polo Storico
Parked alongside modern supercars was something far rarer: the Minardi M191 L, chassis #003, powered by Lamborghini’s LE3512 V12 engine, which competed in the 1992 Grand Prix season. Lamborghini’s Formula One involvement in the early 1990s rarely gets the attention it deserves, partly because the results were modest and partly because the cars scattered after the program ended. This particular chassis was fully restored by Polo Storico, Lamborghini’s heritage division, with the support of original engineering personnel from the 1990s F1 project.
The restoration preserved most of the original components, including the engine designed by Mauro Forghieri, the legendary engineer behind some of Ferrari’s greatest F1 machines, who later brought his expertise to Lamborghini. That engine produces nearly 700 hp. Hearing it run at Goodwood was a reminder that Lamborghini’s V12 lineage extends beyond road cars into genuine Grand Prix competition, a chapter the company is clearly keen to keep alive in collective memory.
Polo Storico’s involvement here carries weight for collectors. The division handles authentication, restoration, and parts supply for historic Lamborghinis, and bringing an F1 car back to running condition demonstrates institutional commitment that goes well beyond issuing certificates of authenticity. For owners of significant heritage vehicles, this kind of factory-backed work signals that Lamborghini takes its own history seriously enough to invest engineering hours in it, reinforcing the same thread the SC18 pulled from the opposite direction: that the company’s specialist divisions are doing real work, not just branding exercises.
Huracán EVO and Aventador SVJ: The Production Backbone
The Huracán EVO coupe and Spyder made their first UK public dynamic appearances at Goodwood, giving British buyers their first chance to see the updated V10 in action outside a press launch. Lamborghini says the EVO delivers 640 hp and pairs rear-wheel steering with torque vectoring and the then-new Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata (LDVI) system, a central processing unit that manages all aspects of the car’s dynamic behavior in real time.
LDVI was Lamborghini’s answer to a question every supercar manufacturer was grappling with at the time: how to make increasingly capable hardware feel intuitive to drivers of varying skill levels. Rather than simply adding more grip or power, LDVI attempted to anticipate the driver’s intentions and coordinate chassis, drivetrain, and aerodynamic responses accordingly. Whether it fully delivered on that promise depended on who you asked, but the ambition was clear, and it laid conceptual groundwork for the predictive vehicle dynamics Lamborghini would continue developing in subsequent models.
The Aventador SVJ, meanwhile, occupied the Supercar Paddock as the brand’s V12 flagship. By mid-2019, the SVJ was already established as one of the definitive naturally aspirated supercars of its generation, and its presence at Goodwood served more as a statement of authority than a reveal. For prospective buyers in the UK market, seeing the full current range in one location, with factory drivers demonstrating the cars on a challenging course, offered something no showroom visit could replicate.

What Goodwood 2019 Revealed About Lamborghini’s Competitive Position
Individually, each car Lamborghini brought to Goodwood was impressive. Together, they illustrated something competitors struggled to replicate in a single weekend: the ability to credibly occupy the bespoke, heritage, and production segments simultaneously. Ferrari’s Goodwood presence has historically leaned on its F1 pedigree and current road cars. McLaren brings MSO specials and its racing heritage. Porsche fields everything from classic 917s to the latest GT cars. Lamborghini’s 2019 display was unusual in how directly it connected Squadra Corse’s engineering output, Polo Storico‘s preservation program, and the current production lineup into a single, walkable narrative.
For owners and prospective buyers, the practical takeaway was that the company’s investment in these specialist divisions represented more than marketing. Squadra Corse’s ability to produce a road-legal one-off with genuine motorsport aerodynamics suggested a bespoke program with real engineering substance. Polo Storico’s F1 restoration demonstrated that the factory would support its rarest and most unusual machines, not just Miuras and Countachs. And the Huracán EVO’s dynamic debut confirmed that even the V10 range was receiving the kind of integrated technology, from LDVI to rear-wheel steering, that kept it competitive against the McLaren 720S and Ferrari F8 Tributo.
Stefano Domenicali, then Lamborghini’s Chairman and CEO, described Goodwood as a unique convergence of road and race cars. The display bore that out. It also quietly demonstrated that Lamborghini, heading into the final years of its purely combustion-powered era, knew exactly how to present the full weight of what naturally aspirated V12s and V10s could deliver, on a hill climb where the sound alone made the argument.
