What “Built from Scratch” Actually Means Under the Bodywork

According to one source, the Super Trofeo weighs 335 pounds less than the street-legal Huracán, bringing dry weight down to 1,270 kg (2,800 lbs). Why the Super Trofeo Exists as a Separate Machine from the GT3

A natural question follows: why build a separate race car for the Super Trofeo series when Lamborghini also campaigns the Huracán GT3? The answer lies in the regulatory and philosophical differences between the two programs.

The Super Trofeo runs in a controlled, single-marque environment where every car on the grid is identical. Lamborghini sets the rules, controls the parts supply, and defines the performance envelope. That freedom allows Squadra Corse to run the V10 at its full 620 hp without the restrictions that govern multi-manufacturer competition. The GT3 car, by contrast, must comply with FIA Balance of Performance regulations that deliberately limit power (often closer to 500 hp, according to available reporting) and dictate aerodynamic parameters to ensure competitive parity across brands.

What the Super Trofeo Means for Enthusiasts Who Never Race

Even for those who never plan to strap into a six-point harness, the Super Trofeo program matters. The technology transfer is real but often invisible. Rigid-bushing suspension geometry, rear-biased weight distribution tuning, and aerodynamic development validated at racing speeds all filter into models like the Huracán Performante and STO. When Lamborghini’s engineers talk about active aerodynamics on a road car, they draw on data collected from thousands of racing laps in Super Trofeo and GT3 competition.

The collector market has noticed. Autoblog reported a 2020 Huracán Super Trofeo EVO Collector edition with just 84 miles appearing on the auction market, positioning these race cars as artifacts of Lamborghini’s naturally aspirated V10 era. As the brand transitions to the twin-turbo V8 hybrid architecture of the Temerario, the Super Trofeo cars represent the final expression of a pure, screaming, atmospheric V10 in a purpose-built racing chassis. That combination will not return.

For buyers watching the Temerario program develop, the Super Trofeo’s legacy offers a useful lens. Lamborghini proved through this car that it could engineer a credible, durable, globally competitive race platform. The question now is whether the Temerario GT3 can replicate that success with forced induction and hybrid complexity, against rivals who have been racing turbocharged machinery for years.
