One day a Lamborghini Espada turns up, the owner of this four-seater Raging Bulls asks to keep his car for storage in one of the barns and pays rent … for a few months until he disappears, never to be heard of again, never returning to pick up his car … the car remained parked up in the Lake District, near Kendal in the UK … for more than 30 years!

This white Lamborghini Espada, chassis 9200, was hiding out of sight for over 3 decades, initially covered up, but later exposed to bird droppings and everything else running, flying or crawling around in this barn, but in her corner, there wasn’t too much light, and especially no UV rays from the sun, so both the paint and the blue leather interior have survived rather well.

The video below clearly shows the registration being ‘5 MBP’, which corresponds with the Lamborghini Registry listing for chassis 9200, a late September 1973 RHD model with engine number 41150 build on Bertone’s body #X750X0900X arrived at Lamborghini London on September 7 1973 only to be delivered to Wingate four days later, making this a Series III Espada.

Being one of only 456 units of the Lamborghini Espada Series III built between 1972 and 1978, rumor has it only 130 Espada were ever built in RHD version like this barn find, in total a little over 1,200 Espada left the factory gates at Sant’Agata, but this model hasn’t been the most sought after over the years, still having that massive V12 engine at the front, maintenance shouldn’t be taken lightheartedly on these high-performance highway cruisers, so over the years many have gone in disrepair never to be resurrected anymore, some sources state only about 350 Lamborghini Espada are still in driving shape.

This specific Bianco over Blu 1973 Lamborghini Espada Series III RHD will go to auction in the near future, but for now enjoy the discovery of a real Lamborghini barn find in the UK in the movie below:

Perhaps it even has some damage on the bodywork, front section might be a bit dented and the rear could have received a nudge too (I’m just speculating here to be honest) … even if you would be able to locate the required parts to put this Seventies Lamborghini Espada back together it would cost a small fortune, so I guess the owner of this car took a different approach … why not create a one of a kind Lamborghini.

In the end we get a dark red finished V12 powered car that uses the body shell of the original Lamborghini Espada but with a completely new front section, deep front bumper and new dual headlights at either side, a new central grille and an engine cover that looks like the original Espada unit but now features four quick release pins … the entire cover can be removed from the car in one single piece, I wouldn’t try that on your own to be honest, it would take at least two people to remove safely without damaging it.

On the side we encounter some really deep side skirts running from the front wheels onto the back wheels, complete with air intakes to cool the rear disc brakes. Also note there is a vertical air outlet on the front fender, just in front of the door … which on the lower part received part of the side skirts to blend in better.

About the doors … take a closer look and you’ll notice there is no door handle. So how do you get into this custom Lamborghini Espada? Remote controlled doors perhaps … could be, but another option on this car might be pressing the red button on the exterior rear view mirrors … this pops open the doors … just like on a TVR remember?

On the side view we still recognize the original, central lock wheels from the Espada, they have been finished in a modern black paint while the ‘wings’ on the central locking screw look gold anodized, it also seems the car has been lowered but I couldn’t find any information on that.

At the rear we also notice different taillights with a very dark tint, the rear bumpers are gone and in their place we see a large central vent in the low and angular rear diffuser … a quartet of upward pointing exhaust tip have found their place under this diffuser.

Opening the door reveals an interior that has received some serious attention too, the entire dashboard and central console has been covered in what looks like red leather, a new steering wheel is installed that features two ‘angled down’ spokes similar to what Lamborghini mounted in the Diablo VT 6.0 edition, also the gear knob has been modernized and is no longer the wood finished part found in the original Espada.

A first hint of some serious sound can be seen on the custom made door panels, but the ‘big boys’ can be found in the back, underneath that massive glass pane we find amplifiers and massive woofers behind the back seats … this Lamborghini is after all still a four seater V12 powered Raging Bull.

Once the big engine cover has been removed you can detect the engine received some TLC too when they built this car, some of the covers have been painted red, other parts received a coat of contrasting yellow … it might look a bit tired now, but I’m sure there are still a lot of Raging Bulls left in that V12 work of art.

Available options now include a sunroof which wasn’t demanded much, and also from 1974 on, a Chrysler automatic transmission could be ordered. Starting in 1976, the same black ‘safety bumpers’ needed for the U.S. market were installed on the cars for he European market, and by some specialists, these late Espadas were called the Series IV, but the factory kept calling it the Series III.

Although this last model of the Espada was kept in production for the longest period, it didn’t sell as well as the Series II, in its six years production, it only sold 456 units. The complete Espada production totaled at 1217 units, making it Lamborghini’s second biggest success, only the Countach would top this figure much later. Even today, the styling of the Espada is as fresh as 20 years ago, it is still a head-turner, people still stare at it every time one passes by.

Towards the end of the production life for the Espada, Bertone had designed a four-door version of this high-speed luxury cruiser, the overall looks of this final design were very good, but for some reason Lamborghini didn’t take this new Espada into production, which could be seen as a pity, because it would surely sell quite good.

But I suppose after being in production for so long, the Espada was ready to be retired and replaced by a completely new model, but despite several demands by wealthy customers, Automobili Lamborghini SpA never replaced the successful Espada, according to several sources however, during the late nineties, designs of a new Espada 2000 were being developed, check out the L149 drawings in the prototype section of this site.

The main changes over the first series could be found on the inside, the complete dashboard was redesigned, now with a lockable glove-compartment, the steering-wheel was redesigned, the rear passengers received additional ventilation, and the new rear armrest now incorporated a small light.

The styling wasn’t altered too much, during the Series II production run however, new five-bolt wheels were introduced to replace the Miura knock-off types.

Another big change was made under the hood, the Miura/Islero ‘S’ engine was installed in the Espada GTE, with a 10.7 compression-ratio, this engine was able to output 350 Bhp at 7500 rpm.

New ventilated disc brakes with a width of 32 mm at the front and 22 mm at the rear were installed and power assisted steering was made optionally available. The front portion of the door windows were now fixed, and the vertical rear window lost it’s bumper.

This Series II Espada was only in production for two years, but it reached the highest production number of the different Espada series, 575 Series II were produced by Lamborghini. Most Espada’s on sale today are therefore Series II models, and because of the improved level of finish, this series is considered as the best Espada.

Two special versions were built on the Series II chassis, the first was presented by Bertone himself, the Espada VIP featured a TV set between the front seats, a complete bar was installed in the rear sides and the two-tone leather interior was upholstered in the same colors as the exterior. This special is still owned by Bertone, but a better known special was designed and built by Frua and was designated the Frua Faena. (see entry)

A 1970 Espada with serial number 7665 was converted into a 2-door convertible, the car is finished in red over beige leather, the whereabouts of this car are unknown to me, but if anyone has more information, please let me know.

In 1968, Ferruccio decided to built a full four-seater Gran Turismo, and it was presented as the Espada 400 GT, whose styling was inspired by the Marzal prototype of 1966, the first Espada prototype even retained the gullwing door-design, but this was abandoned for the production model.

Marcello Gandini designed the Miura and the Marzal, and was also contracted to create the look of the new Espada, the engineering was largely done by Gianpaolo Dallara, though he didn’t change the already winning formula of Lamborghini, a front mounted V-12 engine, delivering it’s power through a 5-speed Lamborghini gearbox to the rear wheels.

Automatic transmission wasn’t available in the beginning of the production run, but it would become available on later Series. The Espada chassis was a strong fabricated pressed-steel platform, built by Marchesi of Modena, the engine was installed 7.9 inch further forward while an addition of 3.8 inch to the wheelbase freed up enough space for the four-seat cabin, note that an Espada is only about 100mm longer compared to the 400 GT 2+2.

The styling of the Espada was very sensational for the late Sixties, a real head-turner, with its wide track and low lines the car was very impressive. The front of the car, with quad circular headlamps and double NACA ducts in the hood, that fed not the engine but the ventilation for the interior, was simple but effective.

The interior featured four bucket-type seats, with enough space for the rear passengers, if the front seats weren’t pushed all the way back. The dashboard on this first series looked rather messy, but presented the driver with everything he might need, the first show car even had the Marzal steering wheel, but this was redesigned for the production units, the dashboard cluster inside this first series kept the hexagon styling Gandini also used on the Marzal.

On the 1968 Turin Auto Show, an Espada with a Lancomatic suspension was shown, it was made optionally available, but only a few Espada’s were ordered with it. This system was perfected by the German Langen company and replaced the normal spring/damper units with units who’s damping was controlled by the resistance of a fluid, but the system proved to be unreliable.

Only 186 Espada Series I were built, and today they are very hard to find, let alone find a good one, if you really want to buy an Espada, try finding a Series II car, and always remember, a V-12 powered Lamborghini seems to have 12 pieces of everything.

In 1970, a new Series II took over, with minor modifications, the basic Espada chassis would later be used for the Jarama 2+2, in a shortened form.

A small front section of the massive side windows could be wound down for fresh air, because of the sheer size of these doors, special struts were mounted to keep them open, with the weight of the glass panels not helping to reduce the mass of them, because these doors were so large, entry to the rear seats was very easy.

Big air vents appeared on the front fenders, later on the Espada production version they were still there but luckily became a little smaller, also the Naca ducts in the engine hood were used on the production units as where the four big round headlamps,a trademark for the successful Espada.

This prototype was completely finished and was actually driven by Lamborghini test drivers, but Ferruccio deemed the design to be just a little over the edge, he noticed the Piranha which was based on Jaguar mechanics during a visit at the Bertone Design Studio and requested his Espada to be loosely based on this design instead of the daring prototype he received, note that the initial 350GT was influenced by the Jaguar E-Type, Ferruccio liked the Jaguar designs it seems.

Bertone complied with his demand and the Espada was created, a very good looking, low slung car that really holds four people in all comforts, and can do so at very high speed thanks to the fabulous four-Liter V-12 mounted up front driving the rear wheels, the Espada became one of Automobili Lamborghini SpA most successful cars, selling over 1200 units during the production run.

Initially the original Espada prototype was left at the factory, over time the interior was removed, the engine and wheels were taken from it and the car was left out in the open air on a field behind the factory … but today we can admire this unique car at the Museo Ferruccio Lamborghini.

AutoArt took the challenge of creating a scale model of this classic, front engine, V12 super car, a full four seater that today is considered to be the concept behind the stunning Estoque that was unveiled in Paris in 2008.

The Lamborghini Espada was the most successful model until the Diablo came along, over 1200 were built over the years, and even today it is a very nice, comfortable albeit extremely fast exotic.

AutoArt has based itself on the Series II evolution with the new wheels and modified dashboard, let’s hope they do a Series I and Series III too, I wouldn’t mind adding them to my collection as these are very nicely finished.

In real life the Espada was once called the Italian Rolls Royce, I don’t know if the people from RR really liked this, but it is safe to say that the Espada could transport four people in luxury over long stretches of highway … and at very decent speeds.

The overall grandeur of the Espada has been translated into this 1/18 model, it is big, put it next to a Miura or a Countach model and you’ll notice it at once, the Espada is majestic, but still very low slung.

I was able to get a copy of this model very early by ordering it directly from Hong Kong, and I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised, the AutoArt Espada is stunning, judging from the site they will make three different shades, this silver metallic one, a red one and a gold one, collecting them all three would be rather expensive, but do try to get hold of at least one color.

This is one scale model you just have to add to your collection, it is a magnificently detailed reproduction of the real car, and at the moment the only 1/18 scale model available.

The car was finished in a brilliant red paint over a white leather interior, but the most striking feature was actually the fact that this car was now a convertible, during the removal of the roof section the bodyshop performing this job also redesigned the entire car, the front of the car received smaller rectangular headlights and a deep front spoiler was installed too.

The wheel arches were enlarged covering deep wheels, while side skirts were also moulded into the bodywork.

The current whereabouts of this special Espada are unknown at this time, but if anybody has a lead on where this car is know, please let me know by using the address on this page.
