Over 600 enterprises and 3,600 external workers contributed to the project. Throughout the construction period, the company says it maintained full production capacity and posted record sales in 2016, up seven percent year over year.

Third, the production process relies on AGVs (Automatic Guided Vehicles) to move vehicles and materials through the factory. Because AGVs follow programmable paths rather than fixed conveyors, the building layout stays flexible, a significant advantage when the line might need reconfiguring for a new variant or an entirely different model. Fourth, ergonomics and safety centers on collaborative robots that handle repetitive, precision-critical tasks like window gluing, underbody screwing, and wheel assembly.

Those collaborative robots, or “cobots,” deserve a closer look. Unlike the caged industrial arms found in mass-market plants, cobots work alongside human assemblers in shared space, taking over operations where consistency matters more than judgment. Window bonding, for instance, requires uniform adhesive pressure across the entire perimeter. A cobot delivers that identically on unit one and unit five thousand. The human worker, meanwhile, handles tasks where tactile feedback and decision-making still outperform any algorithm: fitting interior trim, evaluating paint finish by eye. Why the Urus Demanded a New Production Paradigm

The Urus became the most produced model in Lamborghini’s history in the shortest amount of time, reaching 10,000 units by mid-2020 and 20,000 by mid-2022. No previous Lamborghini came close to those volumes. The Aventador, by comparison, took roughly a decade to reach similar cumulative production.

That velocity explains why a simple factory extension would never have worked. A low-volume supercar line can absorb inefficiencies because each car spends days or weeks in assembly. At Urus volumes, even small bottlenecks compound quickly. The AGV-based transport system, the digitalized workstations, and the cobot-assisted assembly stations all exist to keep throughput predictable without resorting to the rigid, high-speed automation of a mass-market plant. Lamborghini needed a middle ground: fast enough to meet demand, flexible enough to accommodate the Ad Personam customization program that lets buyers spec nearly everything, and precise enough to justify the price tag.

For prospective buyers, the practical takeaway is straightforward. The Urus production infrastructure was purpose-built to handle high customization at scale. Sustainability as Engineering, Not Marketing

Lamborghini says the entire Sant’Agata Bolognese facility maintains the carbon neutral certification it first achieved in 2015, even after doubling in size. The new office building earned LEED Platinum certification, the highest global standard for energy and environmental design, and a second trigeneration plant paired with the centralized energy hub generates electricity, heating, and cooling from a single fuel source, dramatically improving efficiency compared to separate systems.

Skeptics will note that carbon neutral certifications often rely partly on offsets rather than absolute zero emissions, and Lamborghini does not break down the ratio in this announcement. What is verifiable is that the company invested in physical infrastructure, trigeneration and centralized energy production, rather than relying solely on purchased credits. That distinction matters because infrastructure improvements lock in efficiency gains permanently, while offsets require ongoing expenditure and can be discontinued. For a factory that just doubled its footprint, the choice to embed sustainability into the building itself rather than paper over it afterward aligns with the same Manifattura Lamborghini logic: build the capability into the system so it scales with production.

The Competitive Picture

When Lamborghini announced the Urus, the luxury performance SUV segment consisted primarily of Porsche’s Cayenne and Bentley’s Bentayga. Lamborghini’s willingness to double its entire factory footprint for a single model signaled a level of strategic commitment that competitors approached more cautiously. Ferrari, for instance, publicly resisted calling the Purosangue an SUV at all, and the company capped its production to protect exclusivity.

Lamborghini took the opposite approach: build the infrastructure to meet demand, then manage exclusivity through variants, special editions, and the Ad Personam program rather than artificial production constraints.
