In the days leading up to his UFC Sao Paulo bout against Jailton Almeida, Derrick Lewis found himself in legal trouble as he was arrested and charged with reckless driving in Houston. The incident occurred when Lewis was allegedly caught speeding at a staggering 136 miles per hour in a 50 mph zone.
The 38-year-old fighter was taken into custody but later released on a $100 personal recognizance bond, with his next court appearance scheduled for December 27. This arrest was initially reported by ABC13 in Houston.
According to court records, Lewis faced charges on October 25, stemming from his alleged operation of a vehicle “with willful and wanton disregard for the safety of persons and property by driving at a high rate of speed and changing lanes in an unsafe manner.” The arrest took place after Lewis overtook a law enforcement officer, driving a red Lamborghini at nearly three times the posted speed limit while making unsafe lane changes.
Lewis, who holds the UFC record for the most knockouts, now faces a misdemeanor charge as a result of this incident. If convicted, he could potentially face up to 30 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $200.
The timing of this arrest is particularly unfortunate, as Lewis was preparing for his main event showdown with Almeida in Sao Paulo, Brazil, just days away. This fight marked his return to the Octagon since signing a new multi-fight contract with the UFC after becoming a free agent following his victory over Marcos Rogerio de Lima in July.
Derrick Lewis And His Twin Turbo Lamborghini
We would like to remind you that Derrick Lewis proudly possesses a Lamborghini Huracan, which he has taken to the next level by equipping it with a pair of Late Model Racecraft turbos.
In February 2019, Derrick Lewis made his debut behind the wheel of his Lamborghini, showcasing the twin-turbocharged sports car at the Quick 30 event in Houston, Texas. The 2019 Lamborghini Huracan had a base price of just over $150,000, with an additional destination charge of approximately $4,000.
While at the Quick 30 event, Derrick Lewis expressed his aspiration to complete the quarter-mile race in under 10 seconds. Although he fell just a tad short of his goal, clocking in just over 10 seconds in both attempts, it’s worth noting that this impressive performance came on his Lamborghini Huracan’s maiden voyage, which is quite remarkable.
