Italian luxury car manufacturer Lamborghini is moving toward electrification, a trend already embraced by its sister company Audi. With an expected launch date at the end of 2024, Lamborghini is testing their upcoming Urus plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant. The much-anticipated Urus PHEV has already been sighted numerous times as it undergoes strenuous testing near Lamborghini’s factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese and at the Nurburgring in Germany. A recent short video clip from YouTuber Wildwest has unveiled that the Urus PHEV is now undergoing tests on an open highway under sweltering heat.
The testing site has been pinpointed to be in the vicinity of the Sacaton and Florence regions in the United States after further investigation. It seems that Lamborghini may be evaluating the limits of the new batteries and analyzing how they will operate in extremely hot weather conditions.
This type of real-world testing is a common practice among nearly all EV manufacturers, so Lamborghini’s decision to conduct these tests is not particularly unexpected.
Revuelto Inspired Exterior Updates
That said, the camouflaged test vehicle sports revised headlights and a sleeker front bumper, taking design cues from the Revuelto supercar. While the overall bodywork remains unchanged, Lamborghini also has made subtle revisions to the rear-end styling (most probably a newly designed taillamps and a rare diffuser to keep things fresh).
This specific test mule was also spotted with a distinctive set of alloy wheels, which in fact, improved the overall sporty look of the SUV
Minor Interior Enhancements
Motor1 recently provided information about the updated interior of the 2025 Lamborghini Urus PHEV. Compared to current Urus S and Urus Performante models, the PHEV features a mildly updated center console, a fresh look for the air vents, different shortcut buttons between the dual screens, and a slightly larger lower display.
Lamborghini likely changed the driver’s display to include PHEV-related information, and they freshened up the trim on the door cards and dashboard.
A New PHEV Powertrain Under the Hood
The 2025 Lamborghini Urus PHEV continues to utilize the potent 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, integrating an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack for efficient electric-only driving and additional performance when needed.
Although Lamborghini has not yet confirmed the exact specifications, the company likely aims for performance levels of around 690-700 Hp and 850Nm while enhancing overall efficiency.
Lamborghini’s Next Step Towards Electrification
Lamborghini’s development of a hybrid version of the Urus SUV showcases its commitment to electrification. They expect the plug-in hybrid technology to build upon existing technologies from VW’s MLB-Evo platform, tailored to meet Lamborghini’s performance goals. This platform also underpins vehicles like the Audi Q8 TFSIe PHEV.
Lamborghini has further demonstrated its broader strategy by introducing the Revuelto supercar and the hybrid-powered Huracan replacement.
In conclusion, the upcoming 2025 Lamborghini Urus PHEV represents an evolution of a beloved model and Lamborghini’s embracing of automotive technology’s future. The future is closer than it appears, so keep an eye on the roads near you!
