Last month’s Monterey Car Week surprised many when Lamborghini unveiled the Lanzador EV. The car was an unmistakable brand masterpiece but deviated from industry expectations. Instead of a GT-style touring car, Lamborghini presented a two-door coupe concept. Its design, elevated with a distinctive ground clearance and adorned with the brand’s shark-like front, had all eyes on it. As Lamborghini’s head of strategy, Mitja Borkert, put it, “It looks like a spaceship,” and he wasn’t wrong.

At the event, only a select few publications had the opportunity to test drive this exclusive 1-of-1 Lamborghini Lanzador EV concept. Among those fortunate individuals was Yahoo Finance’s Pras Subramanian, who had the chance to take the Lamborghini Lanzador concept for a brief drive.

Getting behind the Wheel of the real thing!

According to Pras, the cabin of the Lanzador exuded spaciousness, magnified by the ethereal glass roof. The dashboard, steering wheel, and other features hinted at the future trajectory of automotive design yet remained anchored in the rich Lamborghini tradition.

Mohr clarified that the Lanzador showcased was a concept model, not the final production version. The forthcoming production model will boast an impressive peak power surpassing one megawatt, roughly equivalent to 1,340 horsepower. However, this concept car was more about evoking emotion than showcasing brute strength.

Pras described his driving experience as “raw.” The Lanzador’s engine growled audibly, with heavy steering and a steadfast brake pedal. It led him to contemplate Lamborghini’s envisioned path for the Lanzador: Would they retain this unfiltered essence to ensure a thrilling drive?

Even during a picturesque 17-mile journey along Pebble Beach, the Lanzador left an indelible impression. Its expansive cabin and elevated seating ensured comfort without diminishing its sporty aura. One drawback? The assertive windshield design did hamper visibility. However, given that this is an early prototype, Lamborghini will likely refine these aspects in the production model slated for 2028. The good news? Work on the final production model has already commenced.

Mohr noted that some feedback could have been better since Pras drove a display model (show car). However, the production version will be significantly more agile, especially with Lamborghini’s electric torque vectoring and wheel speed control. The electric model will bypass the time lags of a combustion drivetrain, offering a more instantaneous and “reactive driving feeling.”

When questioned about the spaceship-like interiors, Mohr responded that Lamborghini’s designers have long positioned the seats as low as possible, even with the car’s notable ground clearance. He emphasized that the seating position in the Lamborghini Lanzador EV is even lower than in the Urus SUV. Thus, for a fleeting moment, an occupant might forget the car’s height and feel as though they’re nestled in one of Lamborghini’s iconic supercars.

Furthermore, Mohr revealed that Lamborghini is in the process of crafting a distinctive sound for the vehicle. The specifics are yet to be finalized, but as per the CTO of Lamborghini, it will resonate authentically and correlate with the car’s response. Additionally, the vehicle will feature designed driving experiences to enrich the overall experience further.

The current generation of EVs is often about ease and seamless driving, but Lamborghini is charting a different path. They aim to create a balance—offering drivers the convenience of models like the Urus SUV and the excitement of the Aventador.

The Lamborghini Lanzador EV might still be a work in progress, but it’s clear Lamborghini is forging ahead, committed to delivering a spirited driving experience in the electric domain.
